I met Marco in a bar in Amsterdam a few years back, he was such a nice guy. When I told him my 13 year old son was a massive Nightwish fan, he just said, "Is he at home?", I said yes, "Do you live nearby?".. Long story short, he actually went to my home to surprise my son, who nearly pissed his pants when Marco walked into the room. I can never thank him enough for making my son so happy that day.
Emppu, imho, is probably in the top 3 metal guitarists of this generation, and definitely in the top 10 of all time. What makes him extraordinary is that while he can absolutely *DESTROY* anyone else in shredding... he doesn't. He is one of the fastest alternate pick players in the world... but rarely shows that side. What he does is find the right balance, complimenting the feel and tone of the song instead of trying to show off. Listen to his solo from Ghost Love Score... then listen to the one from Romanticide. One is a slow, almost legato solo that feels perfect for the long, drawn out notes of GLS, the other is a proper, fast, finger tapping and shredding metal solo from one of Nightwish's heaviest tracks. He shows it again here, with the first solo paying tribute to Gilmour's style, and the second solo being much more a complimentary, Emppu-style solo that still keeps the feel of the song intact. That is a one in a billion talent, and we're lucky he's stuck with NW all these years 🤘
I am a fan of Pink Floyd all my life (67 y old Dutch bloke) and have seen them several times. Got to know Nightwish some 4 y ago after Floor participated in Beste Zangers and was at their Amsterdam concert. This is the ultimate tribute from an exceptional band to an exceptional band
NightWish Army Wisconsin Chapter here. This is AMAZING, but it is not a cover. A cover would be their version. This was a Tribute. Tuomas was so careful to capture the essence of this song, the essence of the TONE. One of the Best tributes I have ever heard. Great reaction ❤
What does it mean to be a legendary band? That a few years later, from 1994 when the original song was released until 2006, a legendary band like Nightwish pays tribute to the creators of this masterpiece, with all that energy and passion that they always put into all the concerts.
Every member of Nightwish, past and present, are Top Quality professionals. This band has been great since 1996. I have the feeling that the new album will be jaw dropping. High Hopes, by Nightwish, has always amazed me. Watching Emppu check on Jukka, and then stepping off the elevated drum stage(7:11) after checking to make sure he is okay.
For me even better than the original, because I'm metal and the versions are very different. For me, the original, the voice, has no flesh. I'm not a vegetarian. Marko and the rest of the band give me that.
Empu is such a class guitarist, never overplays his instrument, always works in service of the song(s),.. but those few moments where he gets to show off his skills, you know he's the real deal. All the musicians in Nightwish are of a rare quality and nobody outshines any other, including Floor, they each are of that level on their instruments of choice. I've seen literally countless concerts and went to a whole bunch of music festivals, but few sounded as good as Nightwish does, and that all comes down to the musicians and their crew. Cause credit where credit is due, we do not forget to praise the band, but we do tend to forget to praise those behind the scenes making it all possible. so, a shoutout to those doing the hard work we do not see, but get to enjoy the results of. ps, congrats on 10K!!

So there's a legend around this piece suggesting that Jukka (the drummer, back then) was playing through a migraine, perhaps due to the stress of knowing that was to be Tarja's last show (speculation... maybe he was just really in the moment). There is a bit where Tuomas catches Emppu's eye, though, and kind of nods towards Jukka, as if to say "check on him". Regardless, this song remains one of the best cover/tributes I know. Thank you for pointing out that it takes ALL of the band members to make a band awesome. It's so true! It's obvious that each member of this band gives each song 100% (I'd say 110%, but we all know that that's not really possible 🙂) and that's what really makes them exceptional. Besides their talent, it's the emotion they each put into playing their parts that make each song so damn good.
This was a tribute to floyd. NW is quite versatile as you are now experiencing. You are also versatile in your choices of music. I am 77 years old and enjoy your enthusiasm. I love NW. They are not just FLOOR, but she enhances them to another level, and the band is very capable.
One of the things that make this performance even more powerful to me is the fact that this was the last show with their original singer, Tarja. There was a lot of turmoil within the band at that time, and at the end of that show, Tarja was going to be handed her dismissal letter, a fact that was known by all members of the band besides Tarja herself. Thus, this particular concert has a special vibe. It could have been the final show of Nightwish as a band, the night their High Hopes were dashed.

I didn't 'get' the song at first, but after liking this cover and a few years later, I love it, but I love this song just as much. They an amazing version of Walking in the Air which you should listen to if you haven't already. And Over the Hills and Far Away.
I've been a Pink Floyd fan since I was a little kid and I actually like this version better. It just has that extra little bit of attitude to it that the original could have benefited from.

I saw Pink Floyd in 1994 and saw them perform the original. When I saw Nightwish in 2012, I was secretly hoping Anette would take a break and the guys would play this song. Alas, no dice. Has anyone suggested a band called Liliac to you yet? If not, I recommend their version of "Seven Nation Army." Like Nightwish covering "High Hopes," Liliac did less a cover and more of a reimagining.

I feel the nostalgia. Smoked lots of stuff to this song... The Division Bell was an underrated album... High Hopes, Lost for Words, Wearing the Inside Out, Marooned, and I even contribute Coming Back to Life for helping me get off the heavy shit I was doing at the time. And Marko totally nailed it, adding a unique vibe to an incredible song.

I've been a Pink Floyd fan since I was a little kid and I actually like this version better. It just has that extra little bit of attitude to it that the original could have benefited from.

Please the song Yours is an empty hope live at Wembley arena version both Marko and Floor sing but Floor growls..

Not me singing along the whole time LOL I adore this! Pink Floyd has been and will always be my favorite band and this is one of my favorite songs from the Division Bell album! Marko does such a great job! Im impressed for sure! (whispers) I actually got to see Pink Floyd play this live back in the day!

I saw Pink Floyd in 1994 and saw them perform the original. When I saw Nightwish in 2012, I was secretly hoping Anette would take a break and the guys would play this song. Alas, no dice.
Has anyone suggested a band called Liliac to you yet? If not, I recommend their version of "Seven Nation Army." Like Nightwish covering "High Hopes," Liliac did less a cover and more of a reimagining.

If I were a betting man (which I am) I would wager that Nightwishs' decision to not tour has to do with them accommodating Floors' pregnancy. I could be wrong but the timing seems right. Empuus' two solos in this song are truly epic. He is a top tier guitarist and so underrated. It's a privilege to "Sub" to your channel. Your content is spot on. TC.

Marco's vocals are worth a deep dive. I'm a HUGE PF fan but I have to say I like this version better. Marco takes lead in The Islander, Kiss While Your Lips are Still Red at Wembley, The Voice of My Father with his band Tarot, The Phantom of the Opera with Tarja, Ave Maria with Floor, several performances with Delain (the Gathering with Delain), with Ayreon....

I feel the nostalgia. Smoked lots of stuff to this song... The Division Bell was an underrated album... High Hopes, Lost for Words, Wearing the Inside Out, Marooned, and I even contribute Coming Back to Life for helping me get off the heavy shit I was doing at the time. And Marko totally nailed it, adding a unique vibe to an incredible song.

Evening from England, thought I should let you know, if you weren’t aware, Floorgasm and Henk did a new version of Phantom of the opera week before last in Holland, and yes you can find it on you tube! Lol x on another topic, I do much prefer this version of this song compare to the PF version? Just my preference
