Hello Ash [ SlashleyReacts ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

I discovered Floor Jansen just before COVID-19 happened in a dutch TV show called "Beste Zangers". I had never heard of her or Nightwish but she and they took me immediately. I suffer from depression but made it through covid with all that went with it (isolation!!) because of them and because of all the reactions to them on TH-cam. They always put me in a better mood. His links to NW videos will be a big help. They are the best ones. As you continue on this journey, please keep tissues close by. Floor has the ability to make all of us cry. I stumbled on to this band 2.5yrs ago and am still affected emotionally by many of their songs. GLS was the 13th song of a 15 song setlist at this, Wacken 2013 Open Air Festival. All 15 songs are top shelf. Not a bad one in the mix. No two are the same, and strangely, each one will be better than the last one, no matter what order. Most of us Americans had never heard of Nightwish, and that is a shame because they have been around for 27+ years. Welcome to the adventure. Your channel just went GLOBAL. It is so heartwarming to see your genuine reaction to this. I felt the same way... the magic in the air, the audience in love, the top notch recorded quality and of course those great musicians. Nightwish awoke my love of metal again, I always wanted to feel this melodic, epic style of it, this just hits right, you know? It is the hybrid I longed for because it combines so many stimulating aspects of music in a way I never heard before. Especially, because Floor has that positive vibe, that power on stage and in her voice, that I never felt before.
There might be a lot of fans flock to this video and give you great advice. In my experience... there are always more facettes to experience with this band, this genre and similar acts, but they will give you a great path, but don't be afraid to take some unique junctions.
Inhale it... when I heard them the first time I realized this was special, so I tried to immortalize the moment and imprint this in my mind as best as I could, because I knew I would never forget this first encounter with them.

The angelic timbre of Floor Jansen's vocals in this one are so enchanting.
This is a performance of a lifetime that any band would dream of.
The sound, audience, performance and perfect timing across all bandmembers are just so spot on.
For anyone that has performed live knows that the onstage audio is usually dogshit and trying to hear everything you are used to hearing during rehearsals is not even close.
Which makes it nearly impossible at times to play as well as you are capable of.
When everything align we get a performance like this!
    Magic!

Greetings from Finland! Welcome welcome! Because you are at the beginning of the journey to get to know this great band, there's a funny little story about how they started working with Pip Williams when they made the Once album (2004). Tuomas (keys) is a main composer, lyricist and visionaire of the band. Ghost Love Score can be found on the Once album. Here's a clip from their book and timeline is year 2003-04:
    ----------------------
From the very start, Tuomas had a strong feeling that Once had to have an orchestra, come what ever may. After finishing the recording of backing tracks, the process continued in London with the legendary producer Pip Williams at the helm. Known for his work for the likes Status Quo and Uriah Heep, Williams was responsible for the orchestrations on the album.
When the Nightwish guys heard what orchestra they would be working with, their jaws hit the floor. "As Ewo and I traveled to London at the end of November to meet Pip Williams, we had no clue about the orchestra he'd gotten for us", Tuomas says. "The only thing we knew was that Williams himself would do the arrangements and that through his connections, he would hook us up with an orchestra and a choir. The first time we visited Phoenix Sound Studio, Rick Wakeman (the keyboard player of the legendary progressive rock band Yes) opened the door for us. That's when we realized we're onto something big. As we were having coffee in the studio, Pip dropped the bomb: the orchestra in question had played on The Lord of the Rings, as well as on many other Hollywood soundtracks - all recorded in this studio!"
It seems that Pip Williams wanted only the best for a band he held in great respect. "I have followed the band for some time, and it's been interesting to see how they have developed. Of course Rock bands like Deep Purple have previously used orchestras, but I really feel that Nightwish have combined the best of both worlds most successfully. They are a classic Metal band with strong classical and movie-score influences in their music."
"It was important for me that it would not be just about over-dubbing a few orchestral parts on top of a Rock band", Williams continues. "Tuomas' compositions were brilliant also in the sense that choir and orchestra could be added naturally, so that they don't sound pretentious or contrived. This is of utmost importance. The songs must be structured so as to allow the orchestra enough space. In the end, the results were quite emotive. Also, let us not forget just how good all the musicians in Nightwish are. They are perfectly sympathetic to Tuomas' vision. And Tarja's (1st lead singer) wonderful voice has done the songs great justice."
Williams knew his orchestra well. "I have worked with most of the players on different sessions for many years. Gavin Wright is a sensitive and authoritative orchestra leader, and together with Isobel Griffiths, the orchestral contractor, we were able to secure just the right musicians for each song. Anthony Pleeth, who has the lead cellist and played solo cello on 'Kuolema tekee taiteilijan', is one such example. These guys have done many, many big movie scores, as have the wonderful Metro Voices choir, and I thought this project required the kind of grandiose performance one would find on movie soundtracks by, say, Howard Shore."
Tuomas could not have been more excited about the situation. "Using the orchestra was an earthshaking experience. I only had to lie on the studio couch for two days, listening to these amazingly talented people. During the first takes, someone said into the mike, 'Are these guys really serious?'. When we began 'Ghost Love Score', a positive kind of bewilderment took over the orchestra. That, as well as 'Dark Chest of Wonders', were the first ones we recorded."
Williams was equally happy with his orchestra. "These musicians are such brilliant sight readers that it wasn't necessary to do more than a couple of rehearsals. Then we'd have a take or two of each song. It all went very smoothly. After the takes, I would check that Tuomas was happy, and then we would move on. If there was anything he wanted changed, it would be dealt with in a very short time. I must say, however, that we had prepared very well - I had been constantly on the phone with Tuomas when I was writing the arrangements. Yes, I ended up making a huge phone bill! But the groundwork paid off, as only a few small alterations were necessary."
Tuomas and Pip Williams immediately hit it off on a personal level. "Tuomas is sensitive, caring, very observant - he's what the English call a musical sponge", Williams commends. "It means he is always willing to try new ideas and absorbs the musical influences around him like a sponge. Tuomas always wants to learn more about music, its origins and sound. He has very firm ideas of what he is trying to achieve, but he also leaves space for those working with him to express themselves. He is humble, appreciative and approachable, one of the most talented musicians or composers I have ever worked with. I really think he would make an original and effective movie score composer, and I definetely want to collaborate with Tuomas again in the future - in fact, we're already talking about the next venture. I would also love to collaborate with him on a movie score at some point."
"Many times the players would come into the control room afterwards to listen to the takes, and according to Pip, that's something that doesn't happen very often," Tuomas says. "They're usually not that interested - they just do their job and leave, but now they actually listened to the songs. At the end of the last day, as I went down to thank the orchestra, they started applauding, standing up from their seats. It was one of those great moments in life."
According to Williams, a Pop or Rock artist rarely receives a standing ovation. "The musicians respected the quality of the songs and the challenge of playing such intricate and well structured music. You must remember that these guys also do simple pop sessions, songs that are very easy to play. With Nightwish, they were able to play stuff that was often as demanding as many of the classical pieces they had trained on. This was so much more than just simple 3-chord songs in 4/4 time. And let's not forget that they also had great respect for people that were prepared to take such a huge musical and financial risk, all for the sake of art! Remember, these were very expensive sessions. I'm very satisfied with my own reward for the arrangements, too."
"There is alwas a degree of compromise when mixing a Metal band with a large orchestra, as it's such a huge sound, but all in all, I'm really pleased with the end result", Pip reflects. "The main thing is that we have established a great identity with Nightwish and the orchestra, and our cooperation could be even better in the future. Seriously, Once is one of the most enjoyable projects in my career, and I've done this for 35 years!"

Nightwish Shadow Unit from Estonia reporting in ! Valkyrie Goddess spotted ! Gabriel Bardac entered !
Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy.
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.
And the master of this magic is:
Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish)
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.
This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people. The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival.
We hope, that there is more coming.
    NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘.

The atmosphere, the band, the audience, the lighting, video wall, then the lead singer, Chills!
I noticed how Floor makes a hand gesture, pulling the audience to her, commanding, magnificent.

Welcome to Nightwish!!!!!!! Everyone who is going to leave a comment has had a similar reaction to. this song. That includes me! I heard this song for the first time in January of 2019. I have been a fan since then!
Ash...the chills you were having during the song have a name....
You experienced your first "Floorgasams!" You can have multiple ones during any song....you will also feel an unexplained need to cry during their sad songs, or happy songs!
You will also notice that there are a LOT of Nightwish fans here on TH-cam! Many are huge fans....I don't think I can call myself a huge fan yet....as I have about 10 years of their earlier music I have yet to explore!
Enjoy your journey into Nightwish. Oh....I am more than likely old enough to be your grandfather.... But...I love my heavy metal / Symphonic Metal!

11:05 The Floorgasm brings yet another convert to the family !! 😁 Welcome Sister. You are one of us now. Just FYI, that’s about 70 minutes into the show, and Floor had been killin’ it the whole way already. Also, that’s 82 THOUSAND people hanging on her every word; so, no pressure on her to Bury that (9 second long)high note.... At 6’1 and 170 pounds Floor is a smiling, singing, dancing, enchanting, stage commanding Valkyrie Goddess, and to me at least, a gift from above. Seeing the whole video of this concert, Especially the Floorgasm changed my life. It made me start listening to music again. I love watching these reaction videos and my biggest hope is that people follow and enjoy the Symphonic Metal path I was led to. Welcome to it.

Well I know Nightwish for quite some times, when Tarja was their singer and Floor was singing in After Forever. Tuomas (the main man from Nightwish) and Floor are both influenced by a Dutch band called 'The Gathering'. The Gathering has quite influenced a lot of bands, and the lead singer (Anneke van Giersbergen) is still doing a lot of stuff (solo and for example with Devin Townsend). I saw that someone recommend Within Temptation, but I highly recommend Delain and Epica. If you want to find out a little bit more about this kind of music I recommend 'Sancta Terra' from Epica with Floor Jansen (the lead singer of the video you just watched). The lead singer of Epica, Simone Simmons is married with the keyboard player from Kamelot, another band that you might like.

Gabriel knows what he is talking about. I've been a fan of Nightwish since I first heard about them back in the early 2000's, and every single one of their pieces tells an amazing story. Tuomas Holopainen (the Keyboardist) writes everything they do, and he has a side project about "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck", and one of my favorite pieces from that collection is "A Lifetime of Adventure"
I have a few suggestions of songs that I would love to get your reaction to as well.
Leaves' Eyes - Elegy - Liv Kristine has a piercing and haunting voice.
Within Temptation - The Howling - Honestly anything by them. You mentioned that you love Floor's dress in this Nightwish vid, and if so, then you will love damn near everything that Sharon den Adel wears in concerts and videos.

Hello ash. Welcome to the nightwish army and are Valkyrie goddess. Floor is amazing. She can sing anything. All videos from wacken 2013 are great. Floor was only in the band for about 10 months at this concert. Most in the crowd didn't know her yet. But after they loved her. She has incredible stage presence. Check out storytime, ever dream. This will be a great start. Take care.

12:47 That was the perfect "running away quickly in a cartoon" sound if I've ever heard one! 😂 Thank you for the great reaction!

I've watched a lot of live videos and there is nothing that compares to this! The sound and the lights etc are mind blowing. I would love to have a time machine and 2013 Wacken for this show would be a first stop. If I figure that out I'll take you with me.
