Yes. Candlemass is a definition of doom metal and i cant think of any other band who would be more perfect for the definition of the genre.
Their album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus in the middle of 80-s - is the birth of the genre.
Marx Bane as much as I adore Candlemass I would suggest such an entry should also mention My Dying Bride, Solstice, Funeral, Flowing Tears and Withered Flowers along with Paradise Lost.
So many good candlemass songs. Massively underrated band.
I don't think they are underestimated at all. They are commonly see as one if not the best doom metal band. The two first albums are classical album by almost everyone who look into metal:)

I think you weren't far off in thinking this was about the magi giving baby Jesus a black stone of power and telling him to use it for good, because he (the magi) failed to in his lifetime. Interesting fact: did you know that the priests of Zoroastrianism were called Magi? Zoroastrianism predated both Christianity and Islam.
Regardless, this is one of Candlemass' best. It rocks really, really hard. Other great ones from them include Well of Souls, Bewitched, Solitude, Demon's Gate, and A Sorcerer's Pledge, just to name a few. They are a very mystical band, with lyrics that take fantasy literature topics and give them serious consideration. Very intelligent and dark Dungeons & Dragons vibes, along with many spiritual and occult flavoured songs. Just a great band overall.
This song is from Candlemass 1st album which was an amazing entry and defined the music that afterwards was called doom metal. I think Candlemass was very much inspired by Black Sabbath ideas but came out as a thing on its own legs. And then each year they have continued to release albums (Nightfall (1987), Ancient Dreams (1988) и Tales of Creation (1989)) very important for the growth of other musicians who started to experiment with doom metal.
Yes, Doom metal very much came out of the slower and heavier stuff of Black sabbath.

For the love of God, The Well of Souls by Candlemass if you decide to do another. As a huge metal fan and knowing many of the groups, it saddens me that some of the best and iconic get looked over or everyone else sees some other channel do a song and everyone piggy backs on it.

This album is a masterpiece from start to finish. Would have loved how Johan would have done Nightfall. Messiah killed it but the pure rawness of this album is fire.

From what I’ve gathered from the lyrics, this song sounds like some kind of conspiracy theory about the Wisemen from the Gospel of Matthew.
Johan Langquist (singer on this album and their most recent one) did an outstanding job on this album.
His acctual name is Längquist. The name was wrong spelled at the sleeve.

The version of Christianity that Candlemas draws from for their songs, for lack of better words, is called Christian Mysticism.
It’s not a very “mainstream” sect of Christianity for many complicated, and mostly historical/political, reasons that can’t really be explained properly in a TH-cam comment. So most people, including other Christian’s, either don’t know it exists or mistake it as satanic when it’s not.

Candlemass are not a christian band, but in their lyrics they often speaked about biblical themes, but also about darkness, fantasy, life, death, demons, lovecraftian themes etc.
This song is a really great song even if i think is their "weakest" song from their masterpiece Epicus imho.

18:25 Not quite true. The Judahites were iconoclastic, but the northern Israelites would portray YHWH as a golden calf. The writers (perhaps the Jerusalemite priesthood) of Exodus and 1 Kings even wrote polemics against this practice. The personal name of the calves that we find in Israel, from the Samaria ostracon 41, is 'glyw which means "the calf of YHWH" or "YHWH is a calf". Even after Jehu's revolt and purge of Baal worship from Israel the golden calves remained at Bethel, which could be a good indicator that the Israelites associated these calves chiefly with YHWH rather than a foreign deity.

@@VinAndSori I'm responding specifically to your point that a difference in Israelite religion was the lack of having a "particular thing that symbolized God", but it seems like they, at least in the northern kingdom, actually did. Depending on the period, it's pretty hard to actually separate Israelite and Canaanite religion, and I think the example of the calves (which are traditionally associated with El, but sometimes Baal) are a very good example of that.
Good Christian doom, try out Paramaecium. The first album Exhumed of the Earth is early 90ies and very reminiscent of that era Anathema/My Dying Bride and just as good really. Among the first to use female vocals, violin and so forth. Well worth a listen if you like slow, heavy doom/death.
Have you listened to Ashen Mortality too? They are a great band sadly they did not last long.

No Vin, people being the images of gods doesn't have a moral implications. Consider this - nobody respects the gods of other people. All religion is a tumor on human society that should be axed. The assumption that humans are bad by our nature is, quite frankly, silly. One of the most dangerous aspects of human nature, however, is our tendency to have really strong confirmation bias while also dismissing the literal opposite event. To a Christian if a baby falls out of a second story window and lands just right on some pillow grass so that it survives it is a miracle, but thousands dying of starvation and preventable disease before the age of 5 is either God working in mysterious ways or an example of God not being with the child depending on denomination. To a capitalist the few hundred billions are triumphs of the capitalist system while the millions going hungry despite a surplus of food just aren't trying hard enough. To the cult of sobriety Alcoholics Anonymous works amazingly well, just ask anyone, they've heard all the successes and have never heard of anyone failing despite the fact that AA themselves outright state it works for less than 1 in 10 people. To Vincent, the few atrocities of human history outweigh how much progress we've made. It's always the same. Vincent is a worshiper of death.

For Doom they were already 2nd wave, but they incorporated elements from trash and ofcourse added the Epic to Epic Doom Metal. This was the moment Doom broke and record deals were made, but some other bands were already performing the style inspired by Black Sabbath for a few years at the point, mainly bands like Trouble, Saint Vitus and especially bands like Pentagram, Witchfinder General and Pagan Altar.

I worship nothing really. I may like alot of things.
