    "I don't think it's going to be that successful" - famous words. In all seriousness though when the Switch. came out I thought it was going to flop, until one day my friend who has never had any interest in Nintendo started asking me about it. Of course thats highly anecdotal evidence but I think it's a testament to how well Nintendo marketed the Switch at the time.

    Nintendo's underproduction isn't just a gimmick to drive up demand. Most consumers don't casually purchase a $320 system because they felt challenged to find it. That's a significant share of disposable income for a single impulse purchase. That's before a single playable $65 game as well.
    It does however induce people who really want one and really want to be part of this early discussion/experience to push their purchase sooner rather than later. That doesn't generate more sales necessarily, unless those early-adopters generate significant buzz beyond their closest group of like-minded early-adopters.
    If you're going to frame this historically, than historic release practices are worth mention. Nintendo has really, really avoided over-production (consider the gaming environment in which they were born with the glut of 2600s, Colecovisions and Intellivisions being clearanced at stores), their initial release is always short of projected demand (NES and SNES were hard-to-find hot items their first 6 months, so was the N64, the Wii was a smaller initial production, as was the WiiU and the 3DS) - they're conservative and don't want a ton of product wasting on shelves and being marked down to clearance - that's bad marketing, bad business, and creates a lasting image that the company's product is failing. Initial release>feedback>adjustments>feedback>ramped production. That isn't a gimmick, it's cautious if not wise for a brand-leading product launch and distribution plan.

    I hear you, but one little thing I need to differ with you is the portability aspect. I would never measure that based on whether or not the device fits in my pockets. I take all of my portable devices (Game Boys, PSP, Ps Vita, DS, 3DS, whatever) in a case inside my backpack. I'd never put any of them in my pocket, even if they fit. On one hand, I try to take care of my stuff (with the exception of my phone) and I think portablility has to do with self sufficiency and "handheldability". Also, you'd never consider a laptop isn't portable, you can just pop it in your backpack and carry and use it anywhere, it fitting a pocket wouldn't take away from it. On top of that, think of all those huge phones (some of which are almost as big as the Switch) that people carry everywhere, and no one considers them non-portable (though I probably couldn't fit them in any of my pockets, at least comfortably).
    Anyways, I don't think that's something you could really criticize the NS for. The battery is a concern, sure, but that one too I think could be arguable when you have consoles like the Vita and 3DS XL holding a similar battery duration.

      While you do make valid points, you have to remember that not everyone is going to have a backpack/satchel/purse with them at all times. Unless I'm traveling somewhere that I'm also carrying luggage or other belongings, I'm not going to take anything I can't fit in my pockets. I don't take public transportation, and I graduated from college a few years ago, so I don't have any reason to be carrying something extra. Even if I did fall into those categories, I could bring along my GPD Win that does fit in my pocket, and that's a literal PC. Sure, it's weak, but the library is enormous and I can still run modern games (GTA 5, Fallout 4, etc.) on the lowest settings, which still look great on a small screen. I guess my point is that there's better options available that can do all the things the Switch offers already, unless you REALLY need to play the newest Zelda or Mario on the go. I don't think a lot of "casual" gamers would think carrying something as big as the Switch is worth being able to play Zelda on the go. It's too large to not serve another purpose to someone who isn't in the "hardcore" gamer category like the people who care enough to watch this video. I think the main redeeming quality of the Switch is the multiplayer...if Nintendo focuses a LOT on that aspect, they could get more people on board. As a single-player experience, though, it might struggle to gain traction aside from the usual first-party titles.

    • @patocrioyo1383
      @patocrioyo1383 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ALitleBitSpecial · Disagree. It's portable AND handheld (or "handholdable" to be more precise, unlike an ultrabook, for example).
      What it isn't is pocketable, for sure, but it works as a handheld exactly like a DS would and you can carry it everywhere, so it's a portable handheld.

    • @imandeen9382
      @imandeen9382 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a 3ds xl. I find it to be as portable as the Switch. If you remove the joycons and and place them in a different pocket to the screen it'll work out more convenient in my opinion.

    Switch will be successful. Let me give you some good reasons as to why I think that:
    1.Indie games - Today i was looking through my ps4 library when i noticed i would rather play 30+ games on ps4 on switch. These weren't demanding games, games like fez and super meat boy but i would much rather play these games on the go.
    2. Reception - I don't know a single person who owns a switch and doesn't like it. Even hardcore Playstation fans like the guys over at Kinda Funny love the thing. Only those comparing it to HD twins hated it, but thats stupid. Comping a mobile system to giant computer box, is stupid. It shows people who did those reviews don't understand the product.
    3.Because the battery life is not that bad - My wife played Zelda for 4 hours in mobile mode and still had 20% battery left. The volume was simply at 45% or so and so was the brightness (WI-FI was on).
    4. Public Knowledge of system - I took my Switch over to a local Honda Dealership as they worked on my car and the guy who was helping me apparently opened a switch as well. Then his co-worker came by, and asked what the switch was. I explained the console to him and then played 2 player in FAST RMX. It blew his mind. Their boss came buy because these guys where playing and not working and the employee who was playing it said "hey man look at this thing!" and the boss (which was around 45 years of age) said "yeah I just bought one for my kid on Friday!". Shows you how much people know and love the system.
    5. Nintendo is not making artificial demand - at a local Walmart some friends of mine went to buy a switch even though they had not preordered it. They stood in line for quite some time and finally bought it. Walmart had received more than 60+ Switch systems. and right in front of Walmart, a Gamestop had received 20+ of them. For comparison, Walmart every Tuesday night around 10pm received 2-5 NES classics. There were times when at maximum they would have in stock up to 17. Though this only happened once. Gamestop on the other hand almost never had one on hand, and at launched they received around 12. As you can see, there was a clear difference in shipping amounts.
    6. Exclusives - I'll just do this...
    2017 exclusives for...
    Xbox One
    *Halo Wars 2
    *Sea of Thieves
    *Cuphead
    *Tacoma

    Notice how many of those where third party indies?....
    everyone has an opinion though, you might be right, i might be right but i don't think your looking at this console right. It's not a console. It's not a handheld. Its a whole new category of device. See it from a whole new lens.

    I remember watching this video five years ago, and I felt the same. I was initially apathetic towards the Nintendo Switch. I never had a Wii U growing up, but a best friend of mine did and he seemed happy with it, but it was heartbreaking hearing how much of a flop it ended up being, with the most infamous case being 'Star Fox Zero' being seen as a disappointment. Naturally, I wasn't willing to unload my parents' wallet on a successor that could potentially flop also, and I was more than happy with my investment in retro games. Now I understand how it must have felt for dedicated Sega fans back in the mid to late 1990s, though it's not quite as bad as that.
    Two years later, however, I officially got one for Christmas. Of all the modern game consoles on the market, it caught my attention the most; some of the highly anticipated releases brought me back to the days of Nintendo 64 and GameCube. I've also recently played 'Kirby & The Forgotten Land' and it quickly became one of my new favourite video games. I've hardly experienced play control as tight and responsive, and the great amount of gameplay variety and mini-objectives kept the fun factor high.
    My favourite thing about the Nintendo Switch though, at least from the games I've played, is it seems to be devoid of most of the frustrating inconveniences that plague other consoles, or at least the Xbox One I have. It asked for an update, and it only took five seconds. I can play single-player games without having to be online (Whoever came up with that deserves to be fired). Physical copies contain the actual game and not keys to unlocking a digital version. Going from the Xbox One, which felt needlessly clunky and cumbersome, to this felt like I died and went to heaven. I'm even considering selling Xbox One versions of games I own for Nintendo Switch copies, and just leaving the former as the best DVD/Blu-Ray player I own as of now.
    Fun video to look back on overall.

    Good video as always, but I definitely think that you fail to appreciate the portability of the device (with you admitting you'd only keep the system docked). This aspect of the Switch is a major factor in it's appeal, being that someone would legitimately rebuy Skyrim so they could play it comfortably on the go. The Switch is something I'm genuinely more excited for, and I've never owned a Nintendo console in my entire life (The lack of Battlefront on the Gamecube was what made me pick Xbox over Gamecube). The Switch is a device I can actually use in this busy and unstable part of my life (College Grad). I can take it with me, use it to play console-quality games, and take advantage of its local multiplayer (something that has been abandoned by Microsoft and Sony to my chagrin). I wouldn't buy a ps4 pro or xb scorpio, but I will be getting a Switch for this quasi next-gen period. The Switch offers me experiences unavailable on any other platform, and Nintendo has been making a genuine effort to improve themselves, so I trust them far more than any of the other platforms. Lastly I think the main reason why 3rd party devs are so uncooperative (if not outright hostile) towards Nintendo is because Nintendo refuses to budge on physical media, microtransactions, and rushed bugged games. Just my view of that situation.
    Again awesome video and keep up the good work!

    I don't get the "Does not fit in your pocket" complaint. Portable does not equate to pocket portable IMO. I don't think a 300 dollar devise should be shoved into your pocket when lose change, keys and other stuff goes. I paid 300+ dollars for this thing and it is going into a travel case so it is protected not in my front or back pocket.

    I want the Switch and I've not owned any of the Nintendo consoles since SNES. So, obviously it's not coming from a Nintendo fan. The reason that it appeals to me is that it manifests innovation and uniqueness. In fact, I'm sick of owning and playing a console which is nothing but a watered down version of a PC.

      If it does well I think they will put Pokemon on it. But if it doesn't, I feel like they'll keep it exclusive to the 3DS. I think they'll wait a year or two and decide then depending on how well the Switch is selling.

      I agree somewhat. I am not saying it's the same with everyone, but I was pretty much done with their handhelds with the GBA/GBA SP. I didn't even want a DS until Pokemon Diamond and Pearl was released. Can't say it was the same for the 3DS, Ocarina of Time did that for me. But for some ppl there will always be that one game, or series, that will make them want to get the system it's compatible with. And later down the line, hopefully there will be more games that doesn't make that person regret getting the system at all.

      Minsc Although I think Adam does make a lot of great points, I have to disagree for a couple reasons. for one the gaming industry is booming right now, plus Nintendo's handhelds have always sold well with the exception of the virtual boy. The 3DS was super popular and if Nintendo can convince a lot of those players to Switch over, it could be very successful.

    Nintendo is becoming Sega in the late 90's and 2000's. The wii U is like the Saturn, (totally underrated and awesome). Now the Switch will likely suffer the same fate as the Dreamcast (So much potential but too many burned bridges and lost trust, most consumers have moved on).

  • @HardyRyan
    @HardyRyan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Adam, youre missing one key factor - children. Children are going to prefer the system they can take anywhere & instantly works without having to spend hours installing a blu-ray to the HDD. I dont see most kids between 7-13 caring too much about slightly better graphics on a machine that's tethered to the family TV they dont have 24 hour access to. Also, Pokemon. :)

    January next year will be the best time to see if the Switch was a hit, after the Mario Odyssey Xmas bundle sales and post-xmas purchases being made. MarioKart 8 Deluxe will boost a bit as Mario Kart fans may have chosen not to get a Wii U, which clearly happened. I'm being a big kid and waiting until xmas for some Odyssey, Kart and anything else that looks good by then, I'll be able to get 1-2 Switch for £2 too. Mass Effect Andromeda and Fractured But Whole are out soon to take my mind of it.

    • @Agamemnon2
      @Agamemnon2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the first year we will have a much clearer view of how things will shake out. This year's E3 will also be hugely important. What franchises will get Switch versions, what new IPs will the system sprout, and so on. I think a lot of indie games coming out on Switch will be a given, but it's still up in the air if we'll see "console-quality" ports from PS4 and Xbox, or "HD remasters" of mobile and Vita titles.
      This might be controversial, but I think that the Switch is the best possible system Nintendo could have produced at this price point and at this point in time. If they'd come up with a native 4K machine with HTC Vive support and whatever teraflops number it takes to outshine the Scorpio then yeah, that'd've done the trick for sure, but I don't think that was ever in the cards, not for a $300 launch price. If Nintendo had simply done a straight-up home console at that price bracket with no "gimmick" at all, I don't think it'd amount to much more than something that'd run about the same stuff as a PS4, maybe a bit better, but with a lot smaller library.
      If they'd waited for another year or two, I think the technology to make something impressive would have been cheap enough for them to make a real footprint onto the market. But could Nintendo have waited that long, with the Wii U on its deathbed and the 3DS more moribund by each passing month? We'll never know. It may be that in hindsight, the correct move for Nintendo will turn out to have been to pull out of the console race in 2016. That's how I feel, and am waiting to see if the next 12 months will bear this out. I hope the Switch will not have been a costly mistake, but I fully, completely and absolutely expect it will turn out to be just that.

    • @CAMZAB
      @CAMZAB 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I agree with you. I hope you're wrong with your last comment though. We'll have to wait and see what titles come out. For the past three maybe even 4 or 5 generations I've viewed Nintendo as solely a second console I would have alongside a PS or XB. Once all the Mario iterations have come out and a few other random games I ended up liking, I'm usually happy. It won't take much to beat the Wii games I've held onto, if it gets anywhere near GameCube I'll love it. Bit sad that I'm falling back on enjoying a bit of Mario Golf or Tennis to justify buying a system, that's how Nintendo has got, a nice luxury if you're a gamer, but it won't satisfy you if it's your main console. DS and 3DS are stellar in my opinion, they've always kept the standard up on handheld.
      The backwards compatibility is the thing I would've loved. It being missing here probably shaved a few million sales off and seems annoying, but SNES to N64 to Game Cube didn't have it and they seemed to still know what they were doing then. It also helped the Wii U second-hand game market not get extortionate.

    The Switch is a step back to Nintendo roots in traditional console design and a step back to the Wii but with portability. I don't see why it wouldn't go into the console hall of fame. The Nintendo Switch is not a handheld and I think most people will see it as a handheld but a portable home console which you can take on a plan, work, or on vacation. To me a handheld is for all portable situations like going to the mall, walking down the neighborhood, and sitting on the subway. Nobody thinks a laptop as a handheld right? I don't think Nintendo thought "handheld" when designing the Switch.

    Honestly I think you might be underestimating the love for nintendo handhelds. In my opinion the bigger the better (does anyone really want more stuff for their pockets? Just throw it in your bag!) and during my 13 hour night shift I almost never need to bust out the power cord, but I also can't play for super long periods of time like I could back in the snes rpg days. Sleep mode is nice and fast. Also people need to stop comparing this to ps4 and pc, it's currently the most powerful handheld with a cool big screen option!

    My 2 cents.A lot of people includeing me are waiting for the switch to get extend/decent library + potentional price drop.I'm not going out now to spend 500$ just to play Zelda.But once Mario comes out + evrything else that is planed to come out by then.The console will be worth it, even at the same price.
    Totaly agree with what you said about the indies.With the Vita dead, the Switch is baiscly the go to choise for Indies.And some intresthing things are already anounce.
    Imo the Switch will make enough for Nintnedo to keep them for another round.And yes I think there will be.Don't agree home consoles are goign anywhere.Playstation is all Sony have.A lot of dev seems to like to work for pre build consoles.A lot of games (not exclusives) will not apear on PC this year or it will hapen far latter then their consoles counter parts.A lot of games are so poorly optimise for PC that is pushing gamers into buying home consoles.Kind of agree that the physical media might disappear in the near future but consoles aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
    And about Switch 2.0 I wlecome the idea.I'm the kind ot gamer/consumer that actually waits till the better version of the console comes out.I own only PS3 super slim and not the other models.I own only PSP 3000. PS4 slim and so on.So a Switch 2.0 is actually something I hope for and I think that the rest who went out and buy it now, shoulden't fell screw over.Nobody is forceing anybody for buying anything and owning something from the very start(1st) comes with a price.

      "POW!" ...and you completely missed the target. This is NOT just another "cell phone" that can play recycled video games to a numb majority. This is a hand held gaming device that connects like a console to play real video games with real tangible input devices made for a real gaming experience. I love my LG G3 and can do virtual reality with a headset and play anything I can download from the "Play Store" application but the actual gaming experience is quite limited when using my mobile device's (cell phone) touch screen interface to play video games that it's got me really exited about the Switch. I'm seriously thinking about getting one and I've been a PC gamer for decades. It's the real functional portablility, not pocketability that has me drooling over this one. Then the bonus... I get home and continue on my big screen in high definition.. not milking cows or crushing candy but really playing real video games with a real levers and buttons.

    My problem is that they cut corners on the hardware and that mentality is reflected on software not being as well developed.
    - battery life needs improving
    - they need to fix the issue of the dock scratching the screen
    - they need to use a better quality, scratch & smudge resistant display
    - fuck the BS 32 GB internal storage. they need to go at least 500 GB
    - they need to let you transfer game saves to and from the cartridge to memory card
    I feel like we're going to see a ton of "Deluxe" versions of Wii, Wii U, etc games.
    So basically I fully expect mostly remasters and new first party titles.
    They did have a short lived slim version of the Wii.
    I feel like we're very likely to get a "Pro" version of the Switch in a few years.

    27:00 Nintendo's IPs are not enough to carry a whole console"
    -Nintendo Switch sells 900,000 in the US alone in march
    -The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, A Nintendo IP, sold 900,250
    -The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, is one of the highest rated games of all time
    -Super Mario Galaxy sold over 10 million copies, a Nintendo IP

    you really got me thinking. I totally agree that THIS switch will fail, but only after a smaller better switch is released.
    Tablets are always passively cooled for a reason. More space for battery and less power draw from the chip and fans. This is what will kill this current switch.
    I bet the easiest way for nintendo to succeed is to release a smaller switch with identical specs, basically do the opposite of the 3DS and XL.
    The smaller switch would use a newer chip that is not more powerful, only more efficient, maybe even passively cooled if they wait a few years. I think they purposefully gave the big switch that monster tegra chip that should never be used with such a small battery. To accomplish this, the new switch would only dock at 720p and maybe run 700p or 600p on the tablet. The old switch is clearly a better home console that can be easily plugged in and played anywhere, while the small switch is inferior at home, but fits in your pocket and gets 5 hours or more in BOTW.
    They could have paid nvidia for a powerful efficient better tegra, and before launch they even "lied" and claimed to be using a custom chip. Maybe this is because the new chip is a ways off, but extremely power and heat efficient.
    And yes while i want to believe nintendo created the shortage on purpose, somehow i don't quite buy it. They haven't historically created shortages as far a I know. All that comes to mind is Wii, GC adapter, amiibo, and classic nes.
    I think it is reasonable to think that the Wii was a complete shock to them. Likewise Wii U was shockingly bad for them, so they made damn sure not to waste any money overproducing amiibos and adapters.
    This leads me to believe that the switch may actually just be nintendo being humble and releasing a console in low numbers just to tide over fans who have been waiting for the single Wii U zelda game. Nintendo fans haven't bough a lot of games since the n64 and gamecube. We got ignored on the Wii, and the Wii U had so few games, that fans have unwillingly saved up a lot of money, enough to dump on a 300$ handheld.
    Testing a console is expensive, so they decided to do an open global beta test, only expecting the fans and media to try it out. We all know the Switch is a beta release, possible the most blatant of all time.

The switch is a console that will only thrive if it highlights on a concept that we have also abandoned in recent years for online gaming; gaming right next to another person. If the switch can bring people together like that, especially in a public setting it will sell phenomenally.

Otherwise I would be curious how many people who wanted them for them selves got them versus scalpers buying them. I just bough a Nintendo Refurbed Wii U and honestly...I see no need for the Switch right now...its a over priced tablet I still hold disc based consoles close to the heart.

    I think the only real way Nintendo will have a chance to appeal to more casual audiences is if they get major companies like Activision and Ubisoft to port Triple A titles to the switch, but considering the hardware and the fact that the companies seem to have minimal trust in Nintendo, I don't think that's a likely possibility either.
    Whatever happens to the Switch, at least Breath of The Wild was amazing.

    How would you gauge success? Personally, I think 40 million Switch units lifetime is a win for Nintendo in this day and age (if you consider the Wii a fluke, and look at N64, GameCube, and Wii U sales). However, if Nintendo's ambition includes looking at the competition as well, the Switch needs to sell at least 60 million units versus the PS4 and XB1. How much is Nintendo spending? What are their margins? It's hard to say.
    Additionally, there is an incredible amount of buzz surrounding the Switch right now, and I'm sure it will be even higher heading into the 2017 holiday season. If the Switch launch had failed, I think you would have a great argument. However it hasn't, and it's therefore way too early to be making these kinds of predictions.

    • @Jaguarandine
      @Jaguarandine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What are you basing this on? You seem very sure about this.

    • @Jaguarandine
      @Jaguarandine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CAX 117 Exactly. Which is why cost and margins are so important to figure out, or at least estimate. If these figures are near GameCube levels, then Nintendo may be happy with 20+ million. Though in my opinion, this seems unlikely.
      While GameCube-like numbers may be good enough for a Nintendo home console, their portables sold in much higher quantities. It's reasonable to assume that for a system replacing their handheld and home console lines, the expectations could lie somewhere in between.
      Additionally, Nintendo is more of an international company than it's been, coordinating the Switch launch simultaneously in multiple territories. The amount of overheard, including the money spent on software development and advertising, must be larger than that of the GameCube.

    • @Jaguarandine
      @Jaguarandine 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ALitleBitSpecial Isn't that generally the way of advertisements? Unless you're looking for them, you don't know that they exist? I think it says something that you were aware of some of their advertising efforts like the Super Bowl commercial and the many gamer-centric events they held all over the world, because they weren't cheap.
      I can only speak anecdotally about GameCube advertising (only Nintendo knows how much they've spent on ads for the Switch) and speculate, but gaming is definitely more mainstream now than it ever was. I think it says something that we see Nintendo doing the press junket, hiring celebrities, and just basically making sure everyone knows it exists. I think one of the biggest problems Nintendo had with the Wii U is that people didn't know what it was, or how it worked. That problem definitely does not exist with the Switch.

So now people don't associate the 2 together, meaning the thought of playing FIFA on the go wouldn't even pop into mind. Hard to use that as a selling point now, with Xbone and PS4 as more powerful consoles that run sports games better anyway (and that's been the case following the GameCube days)

    All the console developers Sony Microsoft and Nintendo all seem to have there own take on what's going to happen in the future of home console gaming. Sony realises that PC gaming is taking over the gaming market quickly and that as a direct result of that consoles will die out. Sony who are currently in a bad state financially can't let this happen they get alot of there profit from the Playstation devision so if consoles die out Playstation dies out and Sony may end up bankrupt they desperately want to keep console gaming relevant so there trying to catch up with PC by rushing a console that can allegedly display 4K graphics. Microsoft have accepted that console gaming is a dying media and because they're making alot more money of Windows than they are from there Xbox brand they've decided to back down from console gaming entirely although they've decided to go out with a bang with there upcoming Scorpio console. Nintendo sees something diffrent they think that console gaming is not dying but evolving into something else and there going to be at the forefront of it. These are just my personal beliefs disagree with it if you want.

      The battery life is comparable to the actual handheld consoles. Vita and 3ds are expected to get 4-6 hours.
      Switch is 2.5-6 hours.
      I bet at Max brightness, wifi on, and sound all the way up, the Vita and 3ds would only get 3-4 hours as well.

    I have mixed feelings about the future of games and consoles. Now I usually buy games from a store but recently ive downloaded. I love how I can put my console on rest and when I turn it on I'm right back into the game it's amazing. I think the fear of no physical media is will we actually own these games or can they take them from us at any moment. Physical feels permanent and downloading feels temporary. At least that's how I feel. I think the future is going to move away from physical media all together. I love having physical copies of games but we don't really have a choice if gaming goes the other way. Is it better because lasers, disc drives and other connections wear out over time? Maybe having hard drives full of games is the new physical media. And as long as gaming stays alive is that what we really want? As long as developers give us great games is that what counts? Do we want to buy the game or pay subscriptions? Will it be one device to rule them all? Or will Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft have there own software for future smart TV's to game? Questions.

    • @joemaluso
      @joemaluso 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fallofduty I don't quite agree. Although this seems like a good idea in theory it could potentially cause fragmentation in the games made for the system(s). The system lowers the clock speed significantly when in handheld mode and then ramps it back up when docked. So which spec would the devs try to make the game for? Kinda like games that all 3DS systems can play and the games that only the "New 3DS" can play. It makes it a little more complicated for the customer in my opinion.

    • @jplegend98
      @jplegend98 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Maluso well when undocked its games run at 720p where in docked mode due to the tad extra power it runs in a gigher res. so the non-portable version will just run in a higher res constantly

      joshua powell So what if the devs really want to go all out and want to build a full power/high frame rate version of their game using all the power available to the system for the console only version and the frame rate is crap and game doesn't run well in portable mode? Would they have to add a new icon/disclaimer on the game box saying (console mode only or may not run well in portable mode).

    Yep. They totally overclocked the Cube and sold it to us again.
    That said, I don't agree with the Switch being artificially scarce now that the sales numbers are coming in. If the sales were average and it was still hard to find out, I'd agree. But I don't think there was any reason to think the Switch would be a record setting seller, and after the disappointing sales of both the WiiU and 3DS, compared to their predecessors, It makes sense for Nintendo to play it safe.

    I have owned every Nintendo console since the n64. I have been a hardcore Nintendo fan because let's face it they make the best games by far period. even the Wii u who everybody hated man I think that's actually my favorite console of all time . they made beyond amazing games for that thing.
    and I have no intention of buying the switch. i don't play handheld so I don't really care about the portability feature. and then it's just barely more powerful than the five year old Wii u for playing on a TV. not gonna spend 350 dollars (+70$ to get a proper controller lol) for five year old hardware
    sorry Nintendo but I am probably gonna sit this one out. going back to Pikmin 3, SSBM, MK8, Wind waker, DK, wonderful 101... God I love the Wii u :)

    The success of the switch will be 3 key things, great games, portable and the idea of being able to switch from portable to the big Tv will make a huge difference. Even Ps4 and Xbox owners will get a switch for that very reason. I don't see this system failing at all.

    Plenty of good points but I disagree with your point that the switch is to big as a handheld more specifically that it's a bad thing. I think that its size adds cooling space and room for a bigger battery which can power a more powerful chip for longer. I think that the more powerful chip can save the handheld market from phones because of the significant bump in power letting it run games out of reach from phones.

    Here is the odd thing, they DIDN'T short change it this time around. They purposefully produced more than they expected this time. They shortchanged solo docks....but not the main consoles. I saw two sell at my local wal-mart today and they still had one in the case.

    I know the Vita's first model had this problem, but assuming the Switch isn't sucessfull and Nintendo doesn't make a second model (which I think is the most likely scinario), will this be the first handheld console without a removable battery? It may not seem like a big deal, but if you are like me and want your machine to last long-term, you will be upset when in a decade or two, nobody can use their Switch out of the dock.

  • @AceFondu

    I don't agree that we'll see gaming moving away from hardware. There's still too much money to be made on accessories and physical sales in general. Digital is still a small slice of the pie. You're falling into the trap of thinking this will be the last traditional console cycle when that prediction has been wrong since the PS2 era.

    Just a note +AdamKoralik the Switch uses a custom nvidia tegra x1 chipset, the tegra 2 &3 are older models. The Switch is interesting as in tare downs it's shown to have purposely upgradable parts, as in they did it on purpose for future upgrades. I think we'll see at least a higher storage option very soon.

    As it is I don't stuff most of my handhelds in my pocket anyway (ps vita, 3ds xl, psp). I keep them in a backpack typically. This is what I would do with the Switch as well, so the fact that it doesn't fit easily in a pocket isn't really a big deal.

    As an owner of the Switch, I find that I really like it(part of that is because of Zelda of course). I enjoy playing it in handheld mode around the house and enjoy playing in console mode with the pro controller which is actually a very comfortable controller. Its fun playing around with all the different control options.
    However, time will tell if this Zelda/hardware high will last without quality games to play. All in all, I'm pretty satisfied right now, but I'm getting worried about the future of the console. It needs broader appeal that isn't there right now.

    I noticed throughout the years, I've lost my fondness of Nintendo. In the past, I usually buy Nintendo consoles only for one or so specific game. The 3DS for the Pokemon games and fire emblem. Nintendo home console for super smash. Otherwise, I'd pick the ps4 or the Xbox one over it. Although I gave away my wii-u I did love playing games on my bed, without a tv. I find myself buying a switch and I a,m really enjoying Zelda, which is my first Zelda game! I hope the switch is successful. I a, worried about third part support, but I'm hoping all the first party games are great.

    I don't think nintendo intended this console to be a "handheld" like gameboy, that you can carry in your pocket. They know they have lost that war to mobile gaming. What I think they are trying instead is to fill a gap in console gaming, a tablet-console that you can carry on your backpack or use at home, while in bed or the toilet. You could already do that with the wii u and it was the best part of that console, the worst being that you are constrained by the distance to the console, which was the worst part. So they fixed that with full portability, opening more posibilities.
    Adam nails it with the new version of the console and the possible doom of dedicated gaming hardware

    I'll tell you why it will be a success and it will be Nintendo games that make it a success. Pokemon, Mario Kart, Super Mario, Xenoblade, Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Metroid, F-Zero. The Nintendo 3DS has been selling on only Nintendo games for awhile now and that's the best selling system this generation.

    Taking into account that Nintendo is using Breath of the Wild to help push the unit. Ocarina of Time sold 2million+ copies in its first year, Twilight Princess doing the same give or take for the Wii, wouldn't this drive more sales of the Switch to help draw interest from AAA to develop for it? The PS4 sales numbers after 1 year was 4million with no "new PS4" software, if tradition is correct this should put Nintendo back in the conversation seeing how Mario Kart deluxe and the new Mario game still has yet to come out for the Switch

    I'm not sure that the size will affect sales. It's as big if not smaller than a lot of tablets from what I can see, and it seems to be marketed as a portable device for more long term travel, rather than short bursts on the bus or something. I can see it being successful for parents who aren't sure whether to get their kid a home console or a handheld.
