      That's because Nintendo pulled off of a deal with Sony at the last second to partner with Phillips, I believe. Sony got some experience out of it, and created its own console. Also, there's not much Microsoft could steal Nintendo from.

      Well certainly they're in a good position right now, as the progress of graphical development has somewhat slowed down recently, when you think about the overall video game industry during the past 5 years. But surely, Nintendo needs to catch up a bit with next generation, but it's not necessary for them to be the number one. Afterall, they've found their audience, their customers, and they have different sort of approaches towards the games in general. Which is good for them, as they have secured their future in a way.
      Btw, this is coming from a PC player. It's good to have different manufacturers still around.

      It’s not just a graphical issue. The technical limitations of the Switch are going to influence developer input eventually.
      Developers ‘outgrow’ consoles fairly quickly, the Switch is going to be a challenging piece of the hardware to develop modern games on very quickly.

    • @bk9509-o2o
      @bk9509-o2o 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@V100BB I think if a console sells enough units and the prospect of making money is there, developers will find a way to release software for it. The Switch has a different market from PS4/Xbox One, which compete more with PCs than Nintendo. If the popularity remains strong, they will release titles.

    • @Bristecom
      @Bristecom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This may be an unpopular opinion but I think it's because people (blindly) keep buying them at those prices. Even the newer Pokemon games on switch are really basic looking. A company like Nintendo could make a very innovative and impressive game but instead they make a very basic game based on old simple mechanics with no voice acting or anything and yet millions upon millions of people still buy it. Why? Because POKEMON! The first Pokemon games were innovative and amazing but ever since they've just been rehashed money grabs! That's why I refuse to buy them. Nintendo used to compete with innovative fun games at a good/better price-point compared to competitors but now they're just like the rest and are mostly riding off of their coat-tails. To me, it proves the power of marketing and hype.

      Think about it this way: if you had bought it when it first came out, say $60, you'd only lose out $20 within 5 years. Other games outside Nintendo? Most likely a lot more. So yea, when it comes to pricing, they're focusing on giving the first adopters to finish the game, and find out whether the game's worth it at 60, or sell it afterword for 55, effectively buying the game experience for $5.
      Of course, I'm assuming you're buying the cartridge and not digitally.

    I personally use the Switch about 50/50 portable and docked and see it as the successor to both the Wii U and the Switch, merging the two lines into one. Now the 3DS is finally dying out we're starting to see the pay off of that approach with games like the new Pokémon and top down Zelda games which would traditionally be more of a handheld series coming to Switch so it's really getting the best of both worlds. Hopefully this will mean the consistent stream of 1st party heavy hitters rolling out onto Switch will still be able to continue even after the pool of old Wii U games to port has dried up since they can focus on just one platform for all their major franchises.

    Three areas I think the Switch excels in:
    1. Couch co-op gaming is by and large dominated by Nintendo. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Smash Brothers, Splatoon 2, all super fun to play in the same room with your friends. This is basically obsolete with PS4 and Xbox One.
    2. I work for an IT company with a lot of gamers. Many of ditched consoles for PC gaming, but they have a Switch to play Nintendo titles and get the portability that PC gaming doesn't have.
    3. Nintendo is great at being family friendly. I think they definitely are once again with the Switch (Labo is a great game for kids and families alike), but they are also great at appealing to adults who like to game but aren't necessarily "gamers." I have a lot of friends who love the Switch because they can play it between work, family obligations, kids stuff, etc. Nintendo marketed this in their launch advertising and I think it was genius.

    There's no way that Nintendo would make a deal whereby their signature exclusives (eg any new Mario game) would have the best gaming experience on a different platform. What makes more sense to me is for Nintendo to improve their online offering with the help of Xbox Live meanwhile Microsoft will get a cut and widen the customer base for their service subscription offering. Both win and scenario seems much more plausible.

    I'm affraid that Switch will run out of steam quick. When PS5 and Next Xbox will launch Switch hardware will be so dated, so it couldnt run any ports. Basically we are left with Nintendo first party titles and questionable quality 3th party games. This happened to Wii.

    • @robd9921
      @robd9921 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Your comment needs more likes. Switch will eventually inherit the biggest problems of the Wii & Wii U. The Wii's problem being the hardware. The Wii U's problem being the 3rd party support. Switch is already outclassed now when it comes to hardware, imagine when next-gen drops. A lot of 3rd party games don't fit on Switch carts, this could be remedied with 64gb carts, but I doubt people will pay $80 (or so) for a Switch game when the PlayStation/Xbox version is $60.

    • @Gintaras64
      @Gintaras64 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Lanky Kong Yeah this Pro thing works on PS4, but I don't think it will work for Switch. Assuming, that Switch Pro works the same way as PS4 Pro that means, that every Switch game should run on base (normal switch) too. So it still means, that Switch won't get PS5 ports, because base Switch couldn't handle it. If Nintendo decides to make Switch Pro more like New 3DS with exclusive games running only on Switch Pro, that means it's bad news for current Switch users and if there will be a great number of these "exclusive Switch Pro" games it could mean, that Nintendo just releasing new console (Switch Pro) with bacwards compatibility to Switch games.
      No matter how I look at it, I still can't find a sweet spot for switch future. Switch Pro won't do much good or make much sense. New next Generation Switch means, that current Switch users are left behind and Idea of Nintendo just keeping Switch as it is also bad because switch will be underpowered just as Wii was back in the day.

    • @58jharris
      @58jharris 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I remember reading an article some months back saying that Sony had filed a patent for a Switch style tablet device. The Switch may soon have competition for in the hybrid console market.

    • @Nuvendil
      @Nuvendil 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@58jharris Most of that is bogus. There's no logical path for Sony into this space. PS4 Switch won't work because those components literally cannot - it is an actual impossibility - be shrunk down to meet the space and power draw requirements. So it can't be an actual PS4. But even crsating a new device with analogous performance doesn't work. First, the system is now no longer a PS4. Games would have to be ported to it. Second, the mobile SoC tech is simply not there for Sony to produce a PS4 level portable device at the necessary price point. And by the time it is, Nintendo will be ready to do the same with a Switch successor in, say, 2023.
      Then there's the practical issues. The PS4 is disc based. That can't work, optical drives are way too big and pull way too much power. So perhaps you set it up where the drive is in the doc, games install and play without discs. Fine, but now we have another issue: storage. PS4 games are far larger than Switch. So for a device that is mostly or all digital, you want at least 1TB. Preferably 2. However, you can't use a hard disc drive, they are far too delicate. The strage needs to be solid state or NAND. Well, 1TB of that kind of storate is far, far more expensive than a normal HDD.
      And I could go on, a PS4 Swap is a complete trainwreck.
      As for doing one for PS5, literally impossible. The Switch works because it is a noticeable step up from Nintendo's last system on a technical level despite being a hybrid. Sony cannot do the same. It is impossible. A hybrid even equal to the power of the PS4 Pro is impossible, period. It will remain such for several years. Perhaps longer. And Sony is locked into that arms race, the next Playstation needs to be a step up. They cannot do that with a switch-esque device.
      As for creating one as a vita successor, that completely undermines the point of the Switch: the merging of handheld and home console experiences AND ecosystems. Nintendo doesn't have a handheld and a home console, they have just one device. Sony doing a PS5 and a PS Swap or whatever misses this entirely.
      So no, Nintendo has no looming competition from Sony.

    Part of me loves the Switch for being what it is, but another part of me hates the Switch for the good things that Nintendo has done with it, but didn't do with the Wii U:
    - The Wii U (at least for most third-parties) was pretty tough to develop new games for while with the Switch, Nintendo purposely went to said third-parties and asked what they wanted in the Switch and made the system more developer friendly because of that.
    - They made that ridiculous Creators Program in the Wii U era that completely screwed over everyone who wanted to make videos of either them or their friends playing Nintendo related games on TH-cam, despite being free advertisement for their products, which they definitely could've used in the Wii U days.
    Matter of fact, there's a number of TH-camrs that I followed and became famous overnight, JUST from covering Wii U related games like cobanermani456, Ekita, GameXplain, ZackScottGames, SullyPwnz, PKSparkx, just to name a few.
    The Switch is fine and good, but even with the Switch, it took them a year and a half to finally kill that mess of a program, which should've never existed in the first place.
    - I still question to this day why Nintendo's American Advertising Department had such a hard time advertising the Wii U to folks. Meanwhile, Nintendo of UK and especially Nintendo of Japan knew exactly what to do and really gave their American division exact steps on how to do it right.
    I can go on and on. I will always love the Wii U for the gaming memories that it gave me and the good times I still have with it, but sometimes I wonder if Nintendo wanted the system to fail to a degree.

      To be fair, the Switch’s portability pretty much excuses the power disparity instantly. There was no excuse on Wii and Wii U. There’s no reason those consoles couldn’t have been quite a bit more powerful. Nintendo was rolling with Standard Definition until 2011. Twenty. Eleven.
      Switch is a handheld with HD capability that’s almost as powerful as big, bulky powerhouse consoles from five years ago. That’s just impressive.

    It seems we are past "peak smartphone" now. Three years ago everyone predicted smartphones would kill mobile consoles entirely. Sony didn't even try to make a next gen portable and many people saw Nintendo becoming a software only company.
    Now new flagship phones have become incredibly expensive. Yes, you can game on midrange phones, but the price you have to pay for one of these phones everyone is talking about gets you all three major consoles combined! Very hard to justify as a birthday present for a teen. Plus the vast majority of games are sill crap with frustrating controls and shaky businesses models.
    This opened up a window for a new, high quality portable gaming device.
    The system itself may have been a bit early. But the wave of good content arrived exactly at the right time.

    So I remember when all the PS4/Xbox One games we’re getting ported to the Xbox 360 and PS3. When they start porting PS5 games to the PS4 this will be fine for Nintendo since PS4 level games are getting ported to the Switch. When the time comes where PS5 games are not getting ported to PS4, Nintendo can simply make a more powerful Switch with the power of the PS4. This will make porting to this new Switch a lot easier. I personally think by then it should just be a sequel to the Switch, not something like a Switch Pro

    Where the Switch currently fails is playing games that came out before the Wii U. Unless Nintendo can get its act together and either bring Virtual Console to the Switch or expand their NES Online benefits to include other consoles, the Wii U is going to be viewed as the ultimate Nintendo retro console with NES, SNES, N64, Wii, Wii U, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and DS games playable on it.
    I don’t think Nintendo will ever bring their games to the Xbox because they’re notoriously controlling with the platform they release their games on. Even though they’ve released some stuff on mobile and have become more accepting of things their community likes, I think putting their major games on another platform they have no control over is a step too far for them. The Nintendo Switch succeeds because it is a portable console, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a home console too. Nintendo is in a position where if they make a game for their super successful portable, it is instantly available on the home console side of things too, at no additional development costs, with the dock. Nintendo has very little to gain from putting a future release like Metroid Prime 4 on the Xbox since the Switch can still technically be a home console, and what Xbox brings to the table with Xbox Live, Game Pass, and xCloud isn’t enough for Nintendo to just surrender their bread and butter to another company. I think in a deal between Xbox and Nintendo, Xbox isn’t going to care too much about what Nintendo has to offer them, they just want their brand on a super successful device. With Game Pass being the main thing Xbox is pushing now, it wouldn’t surprise me if Xbox is only partnering with Nintendo to make Game Pass and their upcoming xCloud streaming seem more appealing and have a larger install base.

    Very interesting prediction. Given the Switch's success I do doubt Nintendo would allow their IPs to be on the Xbox. At least in whole form. Like I doubt the next Mario game will be dual release mainly because Nintendo games have no issue running on Nintendo so there's not really a tech faux pas for Nintendo games, it's about the 3rd parties. I feel as though however Microsoft wants to be like Nintendo. They don't want to "directly compete" in a sense against Sony. I feel like, just like you've been predicting, Xbox will be more service like. They want a piece of Xbox, everywhere. It started with he crossplay thing and now we have Xbox Live. I think their goal is to basically just get Xbox, everywhere. If people won't get Xbox into their homes, bring it to their homes yourself. Have Xbox be this universal service so it not only reaches every gaming platform, but it also reaches the markets they can never seem to reach like Japan. It's really smart imo.

    Purchased a Switch recently, though I bought it as a handheld rather than a console.
    The Vita was my handheld of choice for last few years, and with production ending and games slowly draining away, they've begun to move a lot of them over to Switch.
    My biggest fear for the future of Switch is a lack of long tail, big hitters up front then a small trickle rest of the time and then drying up completely. And if they make a Switch v2 I'm hopeful they won't make exclusives for that only too i.e. New 3DS. Nintendo do have a weird history of doing weird stuff and completely shutting off the tap of game releases regardless of success (see Wii).
    Hopefully though the 3rd party and Indies will continue to support it, so regardless of Nintendo's sometimes inane decisions we'll continue to have a reason to use it.
    In terms of business, I'm curious whether the Switch is MORE profitable by itself than having two seperate devices i.e. a console and handheld on the market. And whether the pure money aspect forces Nintendo to make a purely handheld successor to the DS series.

    original xbox was referred to as "Project Midway". Midway was the location of one of few Allied victories in the pacific during WW2. I'm sure a lot of execs at Xbox still hold this same viewpoint - I wouldn't view any "joint venture" between Nintendo (or Sony for that matter) and Microsoft as a benevolent venture. Microsoft will take this as a show of dominance and rake Nintendo over the coals for a couple years until they have milked them of their resources and ability to produce content free from contracts with Microsoft. Ultimately pushing Nintendo to the end of its lifespan as a console juggernaut. The risk here is not simply "well, Nintendo just wont have consoles anymore because things are just so good elsewhere" - rather, they will not produce consoles and they will also be severely hamstrung (by design, financially and otherwise) by cutthroat deals with Microsoft. I'm not saying Mario will become property of Microsoft, but I'm saying Mario will fall on his own sword before that contract is signed... get me? I would view any venture along the lines you propose as highly suspect and a huge red flag. Can things be good? yea, of course, but not likely.

In a way it's sad as it seems like the 3DS still had life and could've rolled along strong for another year or two (just on more M2 Sega 3D Genesis games alone). In the end though, it's a difficult business model for a company to support 2 portable systems of vastly different processing power.

    I got to say I'm underwhelmed by the switch. I love the whole concept of the switch but the games leave a lot to be desired if you owned a wii u or really any other console. The library consists of mostly wii u titles and late 3rd party ports of games on other consoles. They need to focus on more original switch games. Also they need to add virtual console and make the online experience more on par with their competitors since they are now charging for it. Everyone raves about this console but honestly I'm not that impressed. The thing needs games and ports should be released at the same time as the other consoles. Ive passed on multiple ports because I already own them on xbox or ps4 it's honestly hurting Nintendo if anything. The switch tax doesn't help things either. Why would I pay more for a late inferior port? Nintendo and these devs need to get it together.
