Just a note - you do not have to remove the cover just to adjust the chain tension. Just "loosen" the allen bolt then you can adjust the tension by turning the adjusting screw. Don't forget to re-tighten the allen bolt. I could see removing the cover once the job is complete to clean all the sawdust and oil from underneath the cover. Another tip - if the bar oil is gravity fed it will continue to drip when the saw is not in use - I usually empty the oil before putting the saw up when I am done.
Not, "Basically it", at all. This is a FANTASTIC Step-By-Step guide on what to do, and how to apply tension to that pesky loose chain again. BIG thumbs up to you, Sir
When I first saw your comment notification pop up on my phone, I thought it was going to be a hater comment cause I could only see until "basically it". Haha, glad I was wrong. Thanks so much!
@@nukem384 I'm glad I made you smile then lol. One guiding point to add, you know that little yellow/orange tab on the blade you're supposed to remove? Yep. I still had mine on. NO WONDER I COULDN'T GET THE DASHING THING TO TENSION UP (LOLOL). Again, thanks for the upload
I purchased mine from Home Depot and I used it with little effort. Also helped a buddy cut down several limbs on his property saving him $1200 I say it's a great little trimmer.😊 Since posting this I did a major job with the trimmer it worked great.
I started taking down a mulberry tree that is too close to my home with a reciprocating saw. Then I got the Ryobi 40V 10 " Pole saw that got stuck in the middle of a branch in March. Once it started raining I backed off. I made three cuts this afternoon and got those branches off my roof. I'm hoping it is dry tomorrow so I can take he final branch down. Thanks so very much for this video now I know how to correct the tension after saw dust clutters the tool.
I just bought one of these and opened it up to clean it and the chain and bar fell out. Thank god for this video. I was able to put the chain and bar back together and know a lot more about it in the process. Thanks!!
Glad the video helped! Make sure you're not missing a retaining clip like me or you're either going to need to order another one or return the product since it would technically be defective.
Thanks so much much! Just got this pole saw. Had never used a chainsaw before, and your tutorial was perfect. Spent the whole day pruning limbs and stopped frequently to check and adjust the tension. Worked like a charm!
I misplaced the allen wrench that came with my pole saw, will a regular 5mm allen wrench work for the tensioner or do I need the one that came with the saw that has a ball on the end???
A regular allen wrench isn't going to work because the head is different. What you're probably going to have to do is contact Ryobi and get a replacement from them.
Thanks so much. I have a newer model (2023) that has a bolt, so socket wrench takes the cover off, and a screwdriver to adjust the tension, which can be done with the cover on, but with the bolt loosened.
I bought some mini snap ring pliers for external ring and was able to get it on finally! Thought I would post here in case someone else has the same issue. Thanks again!
I followed your directions and appreciate the clarity. However, I have now tried three times to use the saw and the chain immediately get slack when I rev it up, but before using it. Any thoughts? Thank you.
@@stevengraham8130 Did you check if you sprocket was coming off like mine? Obviously that would be a problem if you don't have the clip like I showed very briefly. It's either that, or when you check the bar and chain, is the adjuster piece that creates the tension moved from where you just tightened it from? That could also be it. If the latter, I would exchange it if you can.
That's all sorts of weird. That sounds like some sort of oopsie wiring issue with your particular unit. Talk to Ryobi. Maybe they can send you a replacement.
Hi thanks for your video. I cannot find the allen wrench provided in my pole saw if you cannot find it anymore in your kit, do you think it is available in stores?
I'm sure you could find something. If not, contact Ryobi and you can buy the part from them. That's what I ended up doing with the clip that was holding the sprocket on that I mentioned popped off at some point.
No idea. It's a special tool though, not a normal allen wrench. I would find a parts list within the instructions, contact Ryobi and try to get a replacement that way.
I'm not sure offhand. But that screw is just a normal allen wrench size. So if you have an allen wrench set, you'll have the size with some trial and error.
According to the manual, the tension is correct when the flats on the tie straps.050 in away from the bar when you give the chain a little tug. Basically, it should be pretty snug.
@Jim Allen hmm. Maybe the tensionor on your unit is defective? It shouldnt be popping off like that. I had a similiar issue, but it was my retaining ring, which was a pretty obvious fix
@Jim Allen definitely. Its probably only a couple of things. Maybe theres something wrong with the cover, the retaining ring, or the tensioner. You should know if its an easy fix pretty quick
There's a groove at the bottom of that stem. You have to expand the ring just a bit and get it into that groove and it'll stay there. Not sure if you've ever worked with cars. But ball joints have this same type of retaining clip and it works the same way.
@@derrickkessler5596 Yes. Put the sprocket all the way down and then you'll see the groove right on top of the sprocket. Retaining clip goes in the groove to hold the sprocket in place. My previous response was a little bit off.
Thanks for sharing BUT you never showed how tight to make chain. I hope for your sake and the sake of you bar and chain you did not tighten until you could not tighten anymore. That chain should not be to tight. Be careful. If chain snaps you can be injured.
From a 60 year old widow, your TH-cam video was greatly appreciated ❤

Thanks for video. Do you have any suggestions for how to reinstall the retaining ring on the socket?
You basically just push it down. It should click into place when it's seated properly. You'll feel it.
