I love watching the sidepipes rocking when you goose it. You can literally see torque.

Back in 1965, the year I graduated High School, I visited the Cobra dealer in San Antonio, Texas. It was on Broadway just south of Josephine St. I was inside "Drooling" on the Cobra's, when to my surprise the Salesman came out and asked me if I would like to go for a test ride! I couldn't get YES out of my mouth quicker! It was a 427 model, Silver with Clear Coat on it, Amazingly Beautiful. The salesman opened up the side door and backed the car into the garage then asked me to get in. I got in and strapped in. He went out the driveway and turned left, toward downtown and pulled out. We went down to a road that led to the access road of IH35 North. We then turned onto the entrance ramp for IH 35, that lead up to New Braunfels Ave., that went over IH 35. By the time we got to New Braunfels he was going over 100 Mph, and still climbing. I was having the time of my life! We went quite a way north on IH 35, then turned around around at an exit that ran over to 410 North then turned around and went back the way we came. It was simply amazing! The funny thing was, my dad was an old pre WW II pilot and actually knew Carol Shelby from his flying days. That was back when the Army Air Corps was todays Air Force. I later told him about my ride and he was actually jealous...so we both went back to the Cobra Dealership and he got a ride as well. I never could convince him to buy one, amazingly enough they were under $4,000 back then! Now that I'm much older I have a son that has a Viper, which was also one of Carol Shelby's projects working for Dodge, at that time. The history of Carol Shelby is Legend, and I doubt anyone is his peer. Back in 2006 I went to a celebration for Enlisted Pilots, Carol Shelby was there. I got his Signature in my Mustang book on the Boss 429 Mustang page. I will always treasure it, and pass it down to my heirs!

These cars are absolute jewels. I know, I own one. Fit and finish are superb. And as stated, they give a raw, directly connected driving experience. Once you drive one, they will spoil you for driving anything else. Today's cars feel very muted and disconnected by comparison. But they are definitely not a beginner's car - when you punch the throttle, you had better know what you are doing!

My grandmother best friend had a “Original Shelby Cobra” in Wichita Falls, Tx and I remember that car didn’t come out of the garage till midnight in that small town. I remember him telling me that if I see one during the day it’s a replica. He died years ago and I’m sure his kids got the car but I was like 15 at the time and I knew it was a badass car.

Greetings from South Africa and Congratulations - you have a fabulous car there! The Cobra really is something else though, truly legendary! I built a replica 1988 -1992 and ran it as my daily driver for 10 years, selling it on in 2002. I had about 70K trouble free miles of pleasure and thrills with it. Mine was also Guardsman Blue but no stripes and my exhaust pipes were slung underneath, like the road going British versions and I used a Ford Windsor 302 motor modified for extra power and torque. For road use it performed very well. One thing that finally got to me though is that anywhere you parked it someone would always be there asking all about the car and that gets a bit tedious when you are trying to get about your business and you do not want to be impolite!

Back in around 1971 I took the Bondurant Diving School at Ontario Motor Speedway. It was with the Cobra Owners Club. He drove my car with me as a passenger. When he got done I got into my car and drove it a short way and when I stepped on the brakes the peddle went to the floor. He had boiled the brake fluid in my 1966 427 Cobra street version. I purchased the car in 1968 for $4,995 by convincing my dad to cosign on a loan by saying it would go up in value. I was thinking maybe $10,000. At the time I was using it as my every day car and put almost 50,000 miles on it in the first 4 years I owned the car. Since then I've only added around 25,000 miles on the car.

Youth was wonderful, The best performing of the four overall was the Pantera just because th ehandling was so much better. The AC had way to much power, The Shelby Mustangs wer really heavy. like Goldilocks, the Pantera 351 and the factory suspension was a reall good blend

Back in 1969 in San Diego my good friend Jim bought a used 1966 427 Cobra. How fast was it ? The guy he bought it from said it needed new plugs but Jim just had to take it to Carlsbad Raceway and run it against his Friend's Trailered 1968 Dodge Cornet 426 Hemi Drag Car with drag gears. The Cobra won by 3 car lengths !! I drove it one time and put a few thousand miles riding in it .........

I’m not a owner of anything close to this early type of vintage piece of machinery like this, but this is what I would consider to be a Purist’s automobile I’ve loved this car since of first day bought a model of it. It’s the most beautiful performance car on the planet, hands-down compared to anything and everything that’s been made in the past 60 years plus hands-down this is a sexiest piece of machinery on the road and the best sounding piece of machinery on the road, whether as a427 cobra motor or 302

Mine is almost exactly the same, and I'd say a "prefect spec" would be the addition of power steering. It's OK when you are moving but it's impossible at autocross. Power steering also enables you to run more caster, which will help rescue the car if you get squirrely. Most of the Cobra road racers use power steering.

To be clear, the 427 Engine in this Cobra is very different than the original 427 Big Block used in the original.
Not saying one engine is better than the other, its just that the car's handling is most likely greatly improved with the modern "stroked" 427 small block.
Love the color, classic Blue is the only way to go (IMO).

Nice videography and nice car control too with the donuts. The history of the Cobra is fascinating and definitely worth digging into. There was something special with what Shelby did because there were many other British specialist cars that utilized American V8s back in the day, but none had even close to the legendary following of the Cobra. Even though I would always like to see AC side of things mentioned in reference to the Cobra it does make sense to focus on the Shelby side as even with the Cobra 289 they had to redesign a lot of the structure and with the 427 most of the car was a new design.

Superformance is 1 of 3 that can certify Shelby continuation cars. There's Shelby America and Classic Recreations also.

When you burn yourself on the exhaust, it's called a snake bite. Happenned to me when I was younger and I forgot about the side pipe when getting out of my uncle's Cobra

The 427 Cubic Inch FE engine (the original big block in a Cobra) was more like 550 - 600 HP.

At 13:32 in...I GREATLY appreciate you mentioning the side pipes, (or as I call 'em...Calf Cookers). Thankfully, I've never experienced that horrible pain nor do I want to in the future. I've always wondered WHY somebody hasn't come up with a rolled-up heat shield "towel" that you could roll out of the car and over the pipe(s) in order to avoid a life-long skin dis-figuration. Your thoughts???

    • @carbonelement77
      @carbonelement77  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you 🙏 they actually make a set of heat shields for the side pipes but I just don’t like the way they look. It’s a compromise to keep it looking as original as possible but you always need to remind yourself and your passenger that they are there. 🙏

Heat shields are available in the aftermarket - most often mesh-style. They get hot but not nearly as hot as the sidepipes. They also sell "thermal sleeves" that slip over the sidepipes which can be slipped over when you are still sitting in the car.

I had them on my gt 350. They were made by hooker. I was stopped by the police for not having a heat shield. We contacted hooker and showed there was a space that would not get hot so you could not get burned. I do not know if these had the same

I completely get it. I own a 2012 Grabber blue GT500, absolutely mint condition. It's not a cobra but I love my car and it shows. I wish I could find somebody that loved my car as much as I do that had a cobra and wanted to trade plus a little money of course on my part. Wishful thinking I know. Well I guess it is a cobra. Ya'll know

And no...Superformance are not the ONLY licensed builders of the Cobra my friend.. there's a company down in South Africa that build the full rolling chasis for all of the cars that Superformance build. It all started down here in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. They have the license to reproduce the Cobra, as well as the MkI Ford GT... and a handful of other models as well

Beautiful car, it's just perfect! @carbonelement did you put #77 on the car, or was that the previous owner? Does number 77 have significance with Shelby Cobras? Or just a favourite number?
