I felt like I was the only one disappointed in this remaster!! It looks horrible! What drew me in to the original games was the unique art style and they completely took that away with the remaster.

the original life is strange has such a captivating art style that made it stand out from other games at the time. it wasn’t over the top hyper realistic in the best way possible as it created a unique aesthetic for the franchise. the remastered collection, on the other hand, doesn’t have the same artistic approch as the og’s but instead looks like a hyper realistic game put on the lowest possible settings and it ruins the overall experience as it could’ve been so much more. square enix truly took a wrong turn with this franchise by being straight up just lazy and greedy and its so disappointing to see from a long term fan.
Ifeel the same, and will gladly stick with the original. They could've left this as an optional HD pack, imo, if they absolutely had to - which they really didn't, lol. Just my take on it, though.

I literally cannot imagine remastering a game and bringing literally nothing new to it. it’s like the minute you start thinking about all the deleted and cut concept that they could have put in the game that was originally not included, you start to realize this is the opposite of worth it

Isn't Rockstar doing the same thing with the "new" GTA V that is coming out next week? These developers have so many scrapped ideas that they should incorporate into "remasters" of their games, it would make it so much more worth it to buy.
I am STILL pissed that they had the opportunity to be able to allow a kiss in not just the ending where you're about to kill Chloe and chose not to add it in.
They removed Chloes "what the fuck" in the scene where we see Jefferson runs the Dark Room, the eclipse in a scene with Frank at the end of chapter 1(?) and they added a loading screen between the storm and the class. Jefferson looks shit. And also, someone had a glitch where Joyce had a face that was black and I don't wanna think of those implications. Also Max's room is dark in some scenes
@@ZoeMuller80 They removed the credits after each episode too. An original developer lamented the change since he said that they had different people working on each episode. So that's why they included credits for each episode.
Oh, God, this game was really all my little 15-year-old hipster self’s heart ever wanted. The story, the art style, the music… It’ll always have a special place in my heart.
On the other hand, faces and emotions are better in the original game than in the remastersed. It’s crazy ! For example Victoria’s eyes are huge and her teeth... and Chloe too, big eyes without moving... I don’t understand ! And Chloe’s smile on the principal’s chair ? What ?

To you Life is Strange 2 Does not exist, True Colors Does not Exist so why are you asking for the Series to Return to Twin Peaks that is like watching the Twin Peaks Series scream at the Director to Tell who Killed Laura then Stop watching the Series, Don't watch the Prequel Movie on Laura and then after they do the Return to Twin Peaks go to the Director make more and only this because your other Movies don't exist. I feel like this is a case for die-hard fans only, and only if summer sale brings it down at least 70%. I love the game, but I'm not paying 40 for so little improvement.
This. Of course I am getting it, but at a hefty discount. 70% off sounds OK, especially considering I already own both games. I am afraid this year we will only see a 30% off tops, next year 50% and maybe for 2024 that %70 discount. Maybe if they fix the messed up textures and glitches, I might get it this year.
I loved this game, I played along with the episodes while they were still being released. I would not buy the remaster, or recommend it to friends. If a friend said they wanted to play LIS, I actively try to convince them to not get the remaster. To someone who doesn't know what LIS's style is and how it is meant to look, it looks good in some parts. But to anyone who knows what LIS is meant to be, it looks horrible.
LiS is so much about photography and nerd science it added a meta game. The goal is to count the number of scene where Max is overexposed and compare it to the number of scene where she's underexposed. And boom ! Turns out you get the golden ratio.
I replayed LiS (finished episode 5) a day ago. The graphics aged well. The only improvements i see in the remasters is characters summoning teeth more frequently
I was really kinda enjoying it until episode 2 became super buggy, all the subtitles were wrong and Max was wearing the wrong clothes. If you wanna get this, I would suggest waiting for a sale (when they'll also have patched the game)
I had the subtitle bug, a weird flickering bug that looked like max was trying to leave her own body and then another one where max was moonwalking across the floor haha the bugs are so bad.
At the start of the second episode I was rewinding to save Alyssa from flying toilet paper and all of a sudden I see Max in the background doing a freaking T-Pose 😂, also this happened to me a few times where I would save the fisherman in polarized who I accidentally electrocuted and the game would crash on me. Updated my firmware and it worked with a little prayer 😁
They definitely used AI to "remaster" this... They should have called it the "definitive edition" to complete the insult to buyers. Yes there are some upgrades, but they hardly justify charging twice for the same game... If they care about the fans they should have given a graphical update for free or at very least just make it a DLC with a sensible price. This is so disappointing.
My max kept changing clothes, they removed Chloe’s wtf and BTS episode 3 was the buggiest for me, Joyce had bright yellow hair, white arms and legs and a black face, in Rachel’s room Chloe and Rachel and a few items in the room were a glowing bright blue, like glowing smurf’s, reloading didn’t fix it, and when Rachel and Chloe were watching James and Sera through the binoculars in their flashback they were just glowing orbs of bright light and I couldn’t see anything it was so strange and right at the end after choosing whether to tell Rachel or not it was glitchy af black lines cutting through the screen.
I’ll be honest, this game changed my life. I found out what LIS when I was 8, when I had found an old Aphmau playthrough. She never finished the game, and it took me a solid year to realize it was on the AppStore, and I could just finish it myself instead of rewatching the same playthrough over and over. I had gotten obsessed and this game was how I realized I was into girls. It made up my life. This remastered is so, SO much more different than what I grew up with, and I agree with you. But, although I hate the graphics, I know that this remastered version will catch some other 8-year olds eye, and have them go on the same adventure as I did. This remastered version will be someone else’s childhood. And for that, I can’t be angry.
I literally agreed with everything you said. I remember playing LIS1 and obviously it didn't have mind blowing visuals or anything. I remember enjoying the atmosphere and the vibe it gave off and felt everything looked nice. My first thought when booting up the remaster was....why does everything look so bad?
I see the problem here, you just cannot remaster a masterpiece. But since this is the best and the most heartbreaking game I've ever played, I'd love to see a better outcome. You can't give an artist a deadline, that's just not happening. They can take all the time they need, the final outcome is what really matters to every single one of us. Damn this game is indeed a timeless masterpiece.

The thing is, you can absolutely remaster anything and make it look amazing, if time and effort is given. Just look at the Resident Evil 4 fan-made HD Project, which took 8 years of fans' time to make and is unbelievably good, compared to the laughable "remasters" Capcom gave us. Laziness is rewarded when money is involved.
I agree. I feel like the purpose of these remasters (or so its speculated) was the fact that they wanted to continue Max and Chloe's story again in the next game so this was a way of making everyone sort of replay these and recap everything. That in itself isn't a horrible idea but they should've taken more time.
I guess the thing we really need is a prequel-sequel part of the story. Things that happend before the original and after BtS. To make it fullfilled. More time to hang with Rachel, point of no return, and then - Chloe attempts to find any clues around people that going through their personal 5 steps of acceptance. Full chronological timeline. That could be the great gift for everyone who loves this story.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought the remaster didn’t look great. You’re right that the still photos looked pretty good, but the actual trailers looked worse than the original. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely like how they are finally syncing up the voices to the characters after SO many years, but I liked the original visuals much better. One of my favorite details is Max’s deep set eyes. It makes her look somber, mysterious, and a little worn out. They totally took away the emotion in the characters’ faces and just smoothed them over to make them look more crisp. Anyway, rant over. I’ll still be enjoying my original LiS game🦋

The soft dimness of the original added to the dreaminess and the nostalgic feeling. When they amped up the contrast, they didn't just make the game darker but also ruined the atmosphere.
One of the problems I couldn’t overlook was the darkness. Some parts were so dark, I couldn’t even navigate through it. Also max would randomly glitch up and down while she was sitting.
I agree ESPECIALLY on that hide and seek like minigame in the fifth episode I literally had to turn up my brightness to full when I got to that bit as it was so hard to navigate around
What surprises me the most is that this had been postponed for a few months, (time in which they could test bugs, lighting, animation, etc)... Cyberbug 2.0

Yeah. I don't know about the original but Before the Storm is great. Having not played it in two years, I'd much rather play the remaster to experience it again because it is slighty better and emhasizes the nostalgia. (I don't take price into account since I paid for the original, I'm not paying for the remaster.)
I have a massive love for all the LiS games and have been playing them since the first game came out in 2015. But even I have to agree, these remasters just ain’t it. I hardly notice any differences aside from some newer environmental details and Chloe in BTS. And the bugs are aplenty. I’m not too annoyed with the money I spent, but I’m not blind to the fact that these remasters are pretty unremarkable. Also, the statue scene at 13:55 is definitely a new inclusion. Great video :)

Yeah, I'm glad I didn't spend money on this for real, I'm a massive LIS fan but I totally agree that these Remasters weren't needed, and even less so in this dire state (many of my friends that did bought them complained about it being reaaaaally buggy just like you say in the vid.), here's hoping DN manage to fix it ASAP so people can enjoy what they were advertised/promised with the trailers, cheers for the good vid. and the honest opinion 🤙🏼
It's weird that they even felt the need to remaster this in the first place. Such a blatant cashgrab it's not even funny. Instead of making new content they knew it'd be easier and cheaper to do this instead.
I feel like the remastered version made some of the faces worst rather than better because the original version had a realistic art style and now they make the faces look very clayish. Not to mention the scene where Kate was crying when she's about to jump looked so nice and then the remastered made her look like she got her makeup removed. It looked so off to me. Why would I waist $45 on this when I could played the original version that had better graphics already that I brought for only $20?
This is literally my favorite game franchise of all time and I agree with your points but I always fall in love this franchise. the story, the art, the dialogue, the music. Just everything about this series, 1 2 before the storm, the adventure of captain spirit. I haven’t played colors yet but this whole series always makes me feel so many emotions. It just hits me in all the right places and it truly just makes my soul smile. I dont know what the whole point of this was but I mean I just wanted to express the love I have for this game
Great video, dude. Personally, I feel like there is no point in this remastered collection other than some little textures, lighting, saturation and environmental difference. Even if u compare the collection to the originals, the difference overall is still just little, not much. A great example of a remaster is call of duty modern warfare remastered. That game looked awesome in the remaster from the og. In the end, I just wish to say that the lis collection, according to me, is nothing but a cash grab by square Enix and deck 9. For me the ogs are best. P. S. Also the marketing for the remastered collection felt weird for me since it started a week before the release. That is when I knew this was going to be red flag.
Thank you for this review! I bought LiS years ago and still have a lot of love for it. It was so tense waiting for each new episode to come out but it gave you a lot of time to kinda unpack the mystery and dream about your wild speculations. I know people were down on the episodic release but I think it helped naturally pace the story out and I think it left and stronger impact in my memory as a result. I really wanted an excuse to buy a high quality remaster but it seems like I'd be better off reinstalling the original version.
I never played the game myself but I watched Jacksepticeye's playthrough if I remember correctly... And I just NEEDED to see the next episode everytime I finished watching one. They had some quite good cliffhangers going on for the entire series. And honestly... I agree with the review here. I would rather see a new instalment than a remastered version that doesn't even worth the money. 8 years since the first game came out sounds a lot but it isn't... The first game as much as it has bugs as well holds up pretty well for what it is, story and everything. I wish SquareEnix had enough funding to properly finish the first LiS.
Thank you for mentioning the blur God I thought I was going crazy asf. I love Chloe’s new remodel it’s awesome. In the first scene for life is Strange where Max wakes up the audio completely cut out and would not fix itself and that destroyed all the immersion for me. Before the Storm is pretty great but there is massive lighting issues within episode 2 at least for me. Great video
This remastered should have at least a native PS5/Series X (Cause… what is the point of making a PS4 Remastered of a PS4 game?) and 60fps. This definitely DOESN’T worth 40 bucks.

Keeping well away from their work being trashed, I reckon. After the BtS announcement, there were signs emerging that Deck Nine were Square Enix’s favorites, and it felt like things were being put in motion while Dontnod were working on LiS2. BtS got more promotion from SE than Dontnod’s LiS2 got. Hell, even the comics got more promotion than LiS2. And a SE video content creator being brought on board to give LiS2 some attention felt a bit late in the game.There was also a close relationship on Twitter between Deck Nine key staff and the then LiS community manager. The interactions and banter they had did not occur with the Dontnod account. Things just seemed… odd.
I noticed new dialogue in the first episode when you first take the photo of the butterfly in the bathroom. Correct me if I’m wrong but in the original game, Max simply says “when one door closes, another opens” or something along those lines. You get the implication that the butterfly has significance to the story from that one line. In the remaster, Max says that she can “feel the air moving around her” and that the butterfly feels mystical. It felt like very pointless exposition considering the majority of players already know of the butterfly’s significance as they’ve played the game before. Oh, and on my playthrough in episode 2 instead of subtitles, the filenames for the subtitles showed up instead. How can someone miss that before it gets released?
In the original, I really had a picture of what the characters would look like in real life, they had distinctive features. In the remaster, I hardly recognised half of them! The distinctions were gone and they all looked quite similar 😬
Thank you for this enlightening video. I love the original LiS (haven't played before the storm , not sure if I ever will), and I was hoping for better facial expressions and lip syncing. I hope they fix this in the future, for now I'll entertain myself with discovering True Colors. 😇
Very good video! I still don’t know how they decided which textures to remaster. The ground looks better with new textures and actual grass, but if you look around the school ground in ep 1 of LiS you see that like 2 meters away the grass is gone and I’m sure the current consoles could have handled that. At the same time most of the posters aren’t only not sharp, but straight up pixelated. And also look at the football field, it still has zero details and the ”players“ are still fucking png‘s moving left to right.
Really the main issue that I had with this remaster is the graphics the painterly aesthetic and the vintage filter was gone and why did they remove the vintage filter when we see LiS's world through Max's eyes
For a game that is story driven, with little replayability, with both games only ever having two different endings, and all other titles in the LiS series being unconnected beyond cameos or references, I seriously questioned why LiS and BTS was getting a remaster at all. All the fans would have already played it, and without adding anything new, why would they go through the emotional heartbreak and trauma of playing through the story again. While Uncharted The Nathan Drake collection is a remaster of the same games but for a different console generation, it was prep for Uncharted 4, so those who never played 1-3 could play them before 4 came out. It makes sense. LiS True Colors has no connection to LiS or BTS beyond Steph being in TC and BTS, and there's no plot points that elaborate on this. I just don't understand why this needed to happen at all, and that's also coming from a Life is Strange fan.
I really enjoyed the remasters. Sure, there are some bugs. Sure, as a former video game developer and given what I know of the tech involved, I'm not actually sure why those bugs would have been there, especially on a delayed launch. But, I'm super glad we got the remaster. The faces and expressions are WAY better now, especially in LiS1. $10 for each remaster? Totally worth it to me. Now, the price you mentioned for True Colors... yeah. I enjoyed True Colors. It was... fine. But like... It was already 2021 by the time that game launched. And it felt like it had even fewer locations in the game than the original LiS, let alone LiS2. That could have been fine, but they advertised the crap out of Haven Springs, and as far as I can tell, Haven Springs is a single bar, a flower shop, a record store, and like... an art closet. Maybe there was one external city block in there, too, if I'm being generous, and like half of a mining tunnel. I just found TC super underwhelming, in story, character, choices, and locations. But yeah, I really enjoyed the remasters, and will probably never play the "originals" again now that I have these options.
I tried my best to defend sqaure enix… But I rage quit my remastered playthrough because of all the bugs and glitches… I was really going to war for this game hyping it up and nothing striked me but pure disappointment…. Remasters like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy received new cutscenes new clothes for sora i.e Limit Form new colors for the heartless enemies… Life is strange receive 0 new cutscenes no new outfits for max Caulfield and couldn’t even put alternate costumes onto the other characters… It’s literally just the same game with a sharpness filter on it… Usually in a remaster we receive something new! Something we haven’t seen yet… Life is strange remastered was a game that never should’ve been announced or released in my opinion… I thought it should’ve just been delayed until 2023 but after playing the first 2 episodes of life is strange remastered I thought it shouldn’t have been released at all… also You earned yourself a sub from FreshKingJohns! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I love LiS and BtS a lot, I like them so much that I brought two copies of both games back in the days. Digitally at first and then physical collector version later. This love is so massive I just blindly pre-ordered the remastered version and unavoidably get disappointed by the result of it. I hope the remastered version would get me a nostalgic trip and remind me how this game changes me, but it couldn't. Maybe because I was already disappointed with True colors that I slowly lost faith in this franchise. I don't know, the feeling is so complex I can't explain it in a few words. I wanted to love the remastered but I couldn't.
I'm really glad you addressed the false advertising. My hope went through the roof and seeing the finished product felt like an ebay scam... I love LIS so much and I tried to not bash on it but it's a huge let down :(
I ran into a bug on polarized recently when i went into max's nightmare. i kinda got stuck in the wall and couldn't get out or see properly anyway. So i re did the scene and it was fine in the end after avoiding it. :0
For real. I got both originals for 5 bucks each on sale long ago and this barely updated version is being sold for a full price of a modern release. Sad.
I honestly don't know why people like this remaster, the characters look completely different and the style is no longer there. The only thing i didn't like about the old one was that the background didn't look hd? But at least it looked cohesive with everything else.
im so glad someone mentioned the eyes. i hate them. so much. but specially the way they look on max. max's half lidded eyes were one of my favorite parts of her design and the way her eyes are now just. generic anime protagonist bothers me so much. also the lipsyncing. i didn't mind it too much when it was the original bc the whole animation was kinda stiff like that, but now with the improved animation the lipsyncing looks so much worse in comparison... it's harder to ignore now bc everything else animation-wise was improved. haven't played it yet but it's not making me excited to play it... strongly agreed with you, what's with the big anime eyes... also I don't like the weird lips and the lacking texture of her freckles. For me she have a mixed looks between good and bad. Some scenes she looks absolutely stunning, but the other scenes she looks so out of it.
In the main diner scene with max and Chloe, there was a glitch where when max talks to Joyce, a random employees face pops up on the screen. Gave me a right jumpscare 😂

Mixing realism where it never intended to be in the first place". Those two sentences of yours already sum up the great fault of the remastered version. I remember watching a making off with the game's developers where they said they intentionally made the game with this "painting style art". Changes like the game's characters having a better expression are welcome, but that's it. If they try to apply too much realism to everything, the remastered version will be doomed to stay in "uncanny valley" forever. Great analysis. Congratulations.
their first mistake was letting deck nine do the job, they care less about the art and more about the hype and overpricing it. dontnod was smart for rejecting to do the remaster.
I'm so disappointed by this remaster and I wish I'd just gotten the standard edition of True Colors instead of the ultimate one, what a waste of money. I expected the remaster's visuals to be comparable to Life is Strange 2's quality if not better (as it was also made in Unreal Engine 4) but this just looks.. lazy and without personality. Also I am very surprised to see Steph's model in BTS look so horrible even though she is one of the main characters in True Colors, you'd think they'd put in at least a little more effort to make her look good.
I played Life is Strange a month ago and then saw the LIS Remastered Collection announcement so i decided to wait playing Before the Storm. And yesterday when i reached the end of episode 2 it crashed. The Victoria and Rachel drugging the Tea confrontation scene. I restarted the game like 15 times and it did not work. I also re-installed the game, same shit. Bought the Original BTS game today(Deluxe edition). It is all good so far. Starting episode 2 soon.
I did by the true colors bundle and it was on sale so I got it even cheaper, so that being said I don't nessesarly care about this remaster but I'll play it anyway regardless of the graphical bugs. I was somewhat hoping that they blended the choices from before the storm into the first life is strange to the overall story, but nevertheless I still enjoy the story as it is. As I said I got the bundle pretty cheap, so as long as my game doesn't crash then I'll play through it just fine.
Same, even though the remaster isn’t the best right now, I got the true colors bundle to play for around the same price if I were to buy the remaster itself.

I don't usually comment on stuff but LIS is my favourite game so why not. I think the remasters are fine, I got them for £20 with the bundle and if they iron out the glitches and touched up the lighting in a couple places, I got my moneys worth. I don't think the 'painting' art style is lost at all, I think the environments and lighting are great. As for the faces, I think they're covered with emotion where before I had to imagine it all in for myself. Again, this is literally my favourite game of all time and I'm really cynical so I'd be the first to say boo it's bad, but it's not that bad at all and this is definitley how ill play it going forward. Great vid tho :)

the original life is strange has such a captivating art style that made it stand out from other games at the time. it wasn’t over the top hyper realistic in the best way possible as it created a unique aesthetic for the franchise. the remastered collection, on the other hand, doesn’t have the same artistic approch as the og’s but instead looks like a hyper realistic game put on the lowest possible settings and it ruins the overall experience as it could’ve been so much more. square enix truly took a wrong turn with this franchise by being straight up just lazy and greedy and its so disappointing to see from a long term fan.

This has literally got to be the most depressing story in video game history, even if it has parts that are realistic.
Isn't Rockstar doing the same thing with the "new" GTA V that is coming out next week? These developers have so many scrapped ideas that they should incorporate into "remasters" of their games, it would make it so much more worth it to buy.
I am STILL pissed that they had the opportunity to be able to allow a kiss in not just the ending where you're about to kill Chloe and chose not to add it in.
They removed Chloes "what the fuck" in the scene where we see Jefferson runs the Dark Room, the eclipse in a scene with Frank at the end of chapter 1(?) and they added a loading screen between the storm and the class. Jefferson looks shit. And also, someone had a glitch where Joyce had a face that was black and I don't wanna think of those implications. Also Max's room is dark in some scenes

An original developer lamented the change since he said that they had different people working on each episode. So that's why they included credits for each episode.

I feel like this is a case for die-hard fans only, and only if summer sale brings it down at least 70%. I love the game, but I'm not paying 40 for so little improvement.

I loved this game, I played along with the episodes while they were still being released.
I would not buy the remaster, or recommend it to friends. If a friend said they wanted to play LIS, I actively try to convince them to not get the remaster.
To someone who doesn't know what LIS's style is and how it is meant to look, it looks good in some parts. But to anyone who knows what LIS is meant to be, it looks horrible.
LiS is so much about photography and nerd science it added a meta game. The goal is to count the number of scene where Max is overexposed and compare it to the number of scene where she's underexposed. And boom ! Turns out you get the golden ratio.

I replayed LiS (finished episode 5) a day ago. The graphics aged well. The only improvements i see in the remasters is characters summoning teeth more frequently

I was really kinda enjoying it until episode 2 became super buggy, all the subtitles were wrong and Max was wearing the wrong clothes. If you wanna get this, I would suggest waiting for a sale (when they'll also have patched the game)
I had the subtitle bug, a weird flickering bug that looked like max was trying to leave her own body and then another one where max was moonwalking across the floor haha the bugs are so bad.

At the start of the second episode I was rewinding to save Alyssa from flying toilet paper and all of a sudden I see Max in the background doing a freaking T-Pose 😂, also this happened to me a few times where I would save the fisherman in polarized who I accidentally electrocuted and the game would crash on me. Updated my firmware and it worked with a little prayer 😁

They definitely used AI to "remaster" this... They should have called it the "definitive edition" to complete the insult to buyers. Yes there are some upgrades, but they hardly justify charging twice for the same game... If they care about the fans they should have given a graphical update for free or at very least just make it a DLC with a sensible price.

My max kept changing clothes, they removed Chloe’s wtf and BTS episode 3 was the buggiest for me, Joyce had bright yellow hair, white arms and legs and a black face, in Rachel’s room Chloe and Rachel and a few items in the room were a glowing bright blue, like glowing smurf’s, reloading didn’t fix it, and when Rachel and Chloe were watching James and Sera through the binoculars in their flashback they were just glowing orbs of bright light and I couldn’t see anything it was so strange and right at the end after choosing whether to tell Rachel or not it was glitchy af black lines cutting through the screen.
I’ll be honest, this game changed my life.
I found out what LIS when I was 8, when I had found an old Aphmau playthrough. She never finished the game, and it took me a solid year to realize it was on the AppStore, and I could just finish it myself instead of rewatching the same playthrough over and over. I had gotten obsessed and this game was how I realized I was into girls. It made up my life.
This remastered is so, SO much more different than what I grew up with, and I agree with you. But, although I hate the graphics, I know that this remastered version will catch some other 8-year olds eye, and have them go on the same adventure as I did. This remastered version will be someone else’s childhood. And for that, I can’t be angry.

I literally agreed with everything you said. I remember playing LIS1 and obviously it didn't have mind blowing visuals or anything. I remember enjoying the atmosphere and the vibe it gave off and felt everything looked nice. My first thought when booting up the remaster was....why does everything look so bad?
I see the problem here, you just cannot remaster a masterpiece. But since this is the best and the most heartbreaking game I've ever played, I'd love to see a better outcome. You can't give an artist a deadline, that's just not happening. They can take all the time they need, the final outcome is what really matters to every single one of us. Damn this game is indeed a timeless masterpiece.

The thing is, you can absolutely remaster anything and make it look amazing, if time and effort is given. Just look at the Resident Evil 4 fan-made HD Project, which took 8 years of fans' time to make and is unbelievably good, compared to the laughable "remasters" Capcom gave us. I feel like the purpose of these remasters (or so its speculated) was the fact that they wanted to continue Max and Chloe's story again in the next game so this was a way of making everyone sort of replay these and recap everything. That in itself isn't a horrible idea but they should've taken more time.
I guess the thing we really need is a prequel-sequel part of the story. Things that happend before the original and after BtS. To make it fullfilled. More time to hang with Rachel, point of no return, and then - Chloe attempts to find any clues around people that going through their personal 5 steps of acceptance. Full chronological timeline. That could be the great gift for everyone who loves this story.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought the remaster didn’t look great. You’re right that the still photos looked pretty good, but the actual trailers looked worse than the original. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely like how they are finally syncing up the voices to the characters after SO many years, but I liked the original visuals much better. One of my favorite details is Max’s deep set eyes. It makes her look somber, mysterious, and a little worn out. They totally took away the emotion in the characters’ faces and just smoothed them over to make them look more crisp. Anyway, rant over. I’ll still be enjoying my original LiS game🦋

The soft dimness of the original added to the dreaminess and the nostalgic feeling. When they amped up the contrast, they didn't just make the game darker but also ruined the atmosphere.
One of the problems I couldn’t overlook was the darkness. Some parts were so dark, I couldn’t even navigate through it. Also max would randomly glitch up and down while she was sitting.
I agree ESPECIALLY on that hide and seek like minigame in the fifth episode I literally had to turn up my brightness to full when I got to that bit as it was so hard to navigate around

I have a massive love for all the LiS games and have been playing them since the first game came out in 2015. But even I have to agree, these remasters just ain’t it. I hardly notice any differences aside from some newer environmental details and Chloe in BTS. And the bugs are aplenty. I’m not too annoyed with the money I spent, but I’m not blind to the fact that these remasters are pretty unremarkable.
Also, the statue scene at 13:55 is definitely a new inclusion. Great video :)

Yeah, I'm glad I didn't spend money on this for real, I'm a massive LIS fan but I totally agree that these Remasters weren't needed, and even less so in this dire state (many of my friends that did bought them complained about it being reaaaaally buggy just like you say in the vid.), here's hoping DN manage to fix it ASAP so people can enjoy what they were advertised/promised with the trailers, cheers for the good vid. and the honest opinion 🤙🏼

I feel like the remastered version made some of the faces worst rather than better because the original version had a realistic art style and now they make the faces look very clayish. Not to mention the scene where Kate was crying when she's about to jump looked so nice and then the remastered made her look like she got her makeup removed. It looked so off to me. Why would I waist $45 on this when I could played the original version that had better graphics already that I brought for only $20?

This is literally my favorite game franchise of all time and I agree with your points but I always fall in love this franchise. the story, the art, the dialogue, the music. Just everything about this series, 1 2 before the storm, the adventure of captain spirit. I haven’t played colors yet but this whole series always makes me feel so many emotions. It just hits me in all the right places and it truly just makes my soul smile. I dont know what the whole point of this was but I mean I just wanted to express the love I have for this game
Great video, dude. Personally, I feel like there is no point in this remastered collection other than some little textures, lighting, saturation and environmental difference. Even if u compare the collection to the originals, the difference overall is still just little, not much. A great example of a remaster is call of duty modern warfare remastered. That game looked awesome in the remaster from the og. In the end, I just wish to say that the lis collection, according to me, is nothing but a cash grab by square Enix and deck 9. For me the ogs are best.
P. S. Also the marketing for the remastered collection felt weird for me since it started a week before the release. That is when I knew this was going to be red flag.
Thank you for this review! I bought LiS years ago and still have a lot of love for it. It was so tense waiting for each new episode to come out but it gave you a lot of time to kinda unpack the mystery and dream about your wild speculations. I know people were down on the episodic release but I think it helped naturally pace the story out and I think it left and stronger impact in my memory as a result. I really wanted an excuse to buy a high quality remaster but it seems like I'd be better off reinstalling the original version.
I never played the game myself but I watched Jacksepticeye's playthrough if I remember correctly... And I just NEEDED to see the next episode everytime I finished watching one. They had some quite good cliffhangers going on for the entire series. And honestly... I agree with the review here. I would rather see a new instalment than a remastered version that doesn't even worth the money. 8 years since the first game came out sounds a lot but it isn't... The first game as much as it has bugs as well holds up pretty well for what it is, story and everything. I wish SquareEnix had enough funding to properly finish the first LiS.

In the first scene for life is Strange where Max wakes up the audio completely cut out and would not fix itself and that destroyed all the immersion for me. Before the Storm is pretty great but there is massive lighting issues within episode 2 at least for me. Great video

Keeping well away from their work being trashed, I reckon. After the BtS announcement, there were signs emerging that Deck Nine were Square Enix’s favorites, and it felt like things were being put in motion while Dontnod were working on LiS2. BtS got more promotion from SE than Dontnod’s LiS2 got. Hell, even the comics got more promotion than LiS2. And a SE video content creator being brought on board to give LiS2 some attention felt a bit late in the game.There was also a close relationship on Twitter between Deck Nine key staff and the then LiS community manager. The interactions and banter they had did not occur with the Dontnod account. Things just seemed… odd.

I noticed new dialogue in the first episode when you first take the photo of the butterfly in the bathroom. Correct me if I’m wrong but in the original game, Max simply says “when one door closes, another opens” or something along those lines. You get the implication that the butterfly has significance to the story from that one line. In the remaster, Max says that she can “feel the air moving around her” and that the butterfly feels mystical. It felt like very pointless exposition considering the majority of players already know of the butterfly’s significance as they’ve played the game before.
Oh, and on my playthrough in episode 2 instead of subtitles, the filenames for the subtitles showed up instead. How can someone miss that before it gets released?
In the original, I really had a picture of what the characters would look like in real life, they had distinctive features. In the remaster, I hardly recognised half of them! The distinctions were gone and they all looked quite similar 😬

I still don’t know how they decided which textures to remaster. The ground looks better with new textures and actual grass, but if you look around the school ground in ep 1 of LiS you see that like 2 meters away the grass is gone and I’m sure the current consoles could have handled that.
At the same time most of the posters aren’t only not sharp, but straight up pixelated.
And also look at the football field, it still has zero details and the ”players“ are still fucking png‘s moving left to right.

Really the main issue that I had with this remaster is the graphics the painterly aesthetic and the vintage filter was gone and why did they remove the vintage filter when we see LiS's world through Max's eyes
For a game that is story driven, with little replayability, with both games only ever having two different endings, and all other titles in the LiS series being unconnected beyond cameos or references, I seriously questioned why LiS and BTS was getting a remaster at all.
All the fans would have already played it, and without adding anything new, why would they go through the emotional heartbreak and trauma of playing through the story again.
While Uncharted The Nathan Drake collection is a remaster of the same games but for a different console generation, it was prep for Uncharted 4, so those who never played 1-3 could play them before 4 came out. It makes sense.
LiS True Colors has no connection to LiS or BTS beyond Steph being in TC and BTS, and there's no plot points that elaborate on this.
I just don't understand why this needed to happen at all, and that's also coming from a Life is Strange fan.

I really enjoyed the remasters. Sure, there are some bugs. Sure, as a former video game developer and given what I know of the tech involved, I'm not actually sure why those bugs would have been there, especially on a delayed launch. But, I'm super glad we got the remaster. The faces and expressions are WAY better now, especially in LiS1. $10 for each remaster? Totally worth it to me. Now, the price you mentioned for True Colors... yeah. I enjoyed True Colors. It was... fine. But like... It was already 2021 by the time that game launched. And it felt like it had even fewer locations in the game than the original LiS, let alone LiS2. That could have been fine, but they advertised the crap out of Haven Springs, and as far as I can tell, Haven Springs is a single bar, a flower shop, a record store, and like... an art closet. Maybe there was one external city block in there, too, if I'm being generous, and like half of a mining tunnel. I just found TC super underwhelming, in story, character, choices, and locations.
But yeah, I really enjoyed the remasters, and will probably never play the "originals" again now that I have these options.

I tried my best to defend sqaure enix… But I rage quit my remastered playthrough because of all the bugs and glitches… I was really going to war for this game hyping it up and nothing striked me but pure disappointment…. Remasters like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy received new cutscenes new clothes for sora i.e Limit Form new colors for the heartless enemies… Life is strange receive 0 new cutscenes no new outfits for max Caulfield and couldn’t even put alternate costumes onto the other characters… It’s literally just the same game with a sharpness filter on it… Usually in a remaster we receive something new! I love LiS and BtS a lot, I like them so much that I brought two copies of both games back in the days. Digitally at first and then physical collector version later.
This love is so massive I just blindly pre-ordered the remastered version and unavoidably get disappointed by the result of it. I hope the remastered version would get me a nostalgic trip and remind me how this game changes me, but it couldn't. Maybe because I was already disappointed with True colors that I slowly lost faith in this franchise.
I don't know, the feeling is so complex I can't explain it in a few words. I wanted to love the remastered but I couldn't.
I'm really glad you addressed the false advertising. My hope went through the roof and seeing the finished product felt like an ebay scam... I love LIS so much and I tried to not bash on it but it's a huge let down :(

I ran into a bug on polarized recently when i went into max's nightmare. i kinda got stuck in the wall and couldn't get out or see properly anyway. So i re did the scene and it was fine in the end after avoiding it. :0
Guess I will give it a few more months before I start playing this game (only played true colors and love it).
Yes, wait until they patch it. It still wont look amazing and you should really play the original, but at least it will be bug free! I hope :)
For real. I got both originals for 5 bucks each on sale long ago and this barely updated version is being sold for a full price of a modern release. Sad.
I guess it was too much to hope for that the Remaster would have updated the graphics to be on par with _True Colors_ at least.
I honestly don't know why people like this remaster, the characters look completely different and the style is no longer there. The only thing i didn't like about the old one was that the background didn't look hd? But at least it looked cohesive with everything else.
im so glad someone mentioned the eyes. i hate them. so much. but specially the way they look on max. max's half lidded eyes were one of my favorite parts of her design and the way her eyes are now just. generic anime protagonist bothers me so much. also the lipsyncing. i didn't mind it too much when it was the original bc the whole animation was kinda stiff like that, but now with the improved animation the lipsyncing looks so much worse in comparison... it's harder to ignore now bc everything else animation-wise was improved. haven't played it yet but it's not making me excited to play it...

strongly agreed with you, what's with the big anime eyes... also I don't like the weird lips and the lacking texture of her freckles. For me she have a mixed looks between good and bad. Some scenes she looks absolutely stunning, but the other scenes she looks so out of it.
In the main diner scene with max and Chloe, there was a glitch where when max talks to Joyce, a random employees face pops up on the screen. Gave me a right jumpscare 😂

8:36 - "These games were probably hard to remaster because of their art style. Mixing realism where it never intended to be in the first place".
Those two sentences of yours already sum up the great fault of the remastered version.
I remember watching a making off with the game's developers where they said they intentionally made the game with this "painting style art". Changes like the game's characters having a better expression are welcome, but that's it. If they try to apply too much realism to everything, the remastered version will be doomed to stay in "uncanny valley" forever.

their first mistake was letting deck nine do the job, they care less about the art and more about the hype and overpricing it. dontnod was smart for rejecting to do the remaster.
Max in this game doesn't look like Max that we've known. It looks like we're playing her twin sister or her doopelganger.

it looks like some of the scenes are prerendered and in lowres. Loadigns are in places where they haven't been before. Overall bad remaster :(
When I git my BTS Remastered, the main issue I had was the final cutscenes acted like a broken VHS Tape and they were acting like robots
I'm so disappointed by this remaster and I wish I'd just gotten the standard edition of True Colors instead of the ultimate one, what a waste of money. I expected the remaster's visuals to be comparable to Life is Strange 2's quality if not better (as it was also made in Unreal Engine 4) but this just looks.. lazy and without personality.
Also I am very surprised to see Steph's model in BTS look so horrible even though she is one of the main characters in True Colors, you'd think they'd put in at least a little more effort to make her look good.

it’s like they added too many facial movements to make it realistic but they added to many to the point it looks unrealistic.
I played Life is Strange a month ago and then saw the LIS Remastered Collection announcement so i decided to wait playing Before the Storm. And yesterday when i reached the end of episode 2 it crashed. The Victoria and Rachel drugging the Tea confrontation scene. I restarted the game like 15 times and it did not work. I also re-installed the game, same shit. Bought the Original BTS game today(Deluxe edition). It is all good so far. Starting episode 2 soon.
i noticed that when chloe and max are on the cliffe their reflections are just all in the ocean ... like they are huge
I did by the true colors bundle and it was on sale so I got it even cheaper, so that being said I don't nessesarly care about this remaster but I'll play it anyway regardless of the graphical bugs.
I was somewhat hoping that they blended the choices from before the storm into the first life is strange to the overall story, but nevertheless I still enjoy the story as it is.
As I said I got the bundle pretty cheap, so as long as my game doesn't crash then I'll play through it just fine.
Same, even though the remaster isn’t the best right now, I got the true colors bundle to play for around the same price if I were to buy the remaster itself.
Honestly, we’re so freaking tired of this remaster era. Yet more than 5 damned years we barely see something new except the remaster of this or that game. Ea$y money for publishers, that’s what it is. Lack of new experience for us. Uh.

I don't usually comment on stuff but LIS is my favourite game so why not. I think the remasters are fine, I got them for £20 with the bundle and if they iron out the glitches and touched up the lighting in a couple places, I got my moneys worth. I don't think the 'painting' art style is lost at all, I think the environments and lighting are great. As for the faces, I think they're covered with emotion where before I had to imagine it all in for myself. Again, this is literally my favourite game of all time and I'm really cynical so I'd be the first to say boo it's bad, but it's not that bad at all and this is definitley how ill play it going forward. Great vid tho :)
