    Have fun on the return flight.

    Flying over there in a few weeks. We have a family farm not far from Dover. Flying VA, and I have no idea what aircraft I'll be in yet. All of my trips over, I just stay up after arrival and hit the sack early on day one. After that, the lag is not so bad. I hate the flight back because of the extra time flying into the wind.
    Mind the gap, and look right when crossing. I like the way they put that in the crosswalks in London.

    Lovely shots of the RAF bomber memorial. Very poignant timing here in Australia. ANZAC Day is April 25th, which marked the landing date at Gallipoli, and commemorates all Australians who died in service of their country. There were many Aussie airmen crewing the fighters and bombers over England.
    Nb : If you ever visit Canberra, drop by the war memorial to see 'G for George' - the RAAF Lancaster bomber that survived 90 missions over Germany and occupied Europe.

    Well I ran a blog called WIngnutz for years. It was frequented by pilots and aviation buffs from all over the world. I thoroughly appreciate and enjoy your posts Juan. I especially like the engineering and technology components of your content. All very well stated and interesting. This particular video though, of London is a real treat, and the sociological and historical snap shot is well worth the time to watch. I lived a few miles from the Boeing HQ when is was still in South Seattle for over 60 some odd years, and was a frequent visitor to the Everett plant all during the first 47 build and watched the first ever flight. If you ever get to Seattle they have one of the best Museums of Flight, and the restoration facility at Payne Field is a worthy adventure too. Look me up, I'll be your tour guide. Thanks.

    Goodbye, Blue Sky... I absolutely love that album... Funny enough, this video is from around the time I first listened to a song from The Wall. As a high school student, I had set my radio alarm to the local classic rock station because I was getting bored with modern music. Let me tell you, when the first thing you hear out of the radio is the helicopter from Happiest Days of Our Lives, you wake up fast. But I was definitely captivated by what came next. I'd never connected so suddenly and strongly with a piece of music before. It was definitely cathartic.

    Love the video Juan! I live about 15 miles to the East of London, I guess because it's so close and familiar we tend to forget that it is one of the World's great and historic cities. Fascinating to view it from a visitor's rather than a local's perspective. Incidentally, if you've ever approached Heathrow from the East and vectored in from the LAM VOR chances are you've passed within a few miles of my home. On a clear day I get a great view of the planes in that stack from our parking lot. Small world eh?

    is there a video that we can go to in order to tour the inside of the 777 without showing anything that is classified? Curious to see if there is something like a crew quarters for during off duty while flying? Wouldn't hurt to see the inside of passenger cabin either. Are the seats bigger? You look like you really love your job.
    Headwind / Tailwind takes longer because of takeoff and landing considerations (distance travelled on runway to achieve takeoff speed one way and distance to stop when landing as well as the effect on angle of climb. But in reality you would be taking off into wind and landing into wind on both trips. I also think about the amount of fuel loaded being different based on fuel burn in headwind vs tailwind. Unless I’m thinking of this practically and not mathematically lol.
    Edit: actually it should still take longer because you’re flying into the wind for a longer period of time than you have a tailwind.
    I don’t know why I thought so much about this, but it was fun :)

    Wonderful choice of music for the war memorial footage. Brings tears to my eyes. Only after falling in love with that song years ago did I later meet my in laws who lived through that very terror as children. Cowering in shelters as the bombs destroyed their towns. They obviously survived, but were scarred for life.
    Let's not repeat this madness AGAIN, ok? Anyone listening? Trump, et al?
    And remember this sage advice when you get to tour the Churchill site: "No fighting in the war room!"

    d=rt; so t=d/r
    t = d/(r+x) + d/(r-x); x is the difference from nominal speed r
    t = d((r-x)+(r+x))/((r+x)(r-x)), which simplifies to
    t = 2dr/(r^2-x^2), so any difference (x>0) results in longer total travel time.

  • @xxwookey

    As you say, mpg for modern planes is much the same as 1 person in a reasonably efficient car. But the issue is that that 5000-mile flight is roughly 1 tonne of CO2 emissions. So no worse than driving 5000 miles, but that would take several months for normal driving levels (people in the UK average 8000 miles/yr in a car, probably higher in the states). So this one return flight is equivalent to a whole year of driving emissions. And the high altitude release causes additional forcing so in practice it works out about twice as much. To avoid completely buggering up the atmosphere we need to get _total_ emissions down to about 1 tonne per person (the amount that the ecosystem can absorb every year). So that means you can take one intercontinental flight every 2 years _and_ generate zero emissions from heating, driving, food, stuff, electricity etc. If you want to do any pof that then you need to take _less_ than one intercontinental flight every 2 years. Can you see that we have a pretty serious problem yet?
    Blancolirio's carbon footprint must be boggling. 100 flights/yr? so maybe 200 tonnes, or 400 tonnes effective? That makes him one of the worst polluters on the planet (along with all other long-haul pilots of course). Until we have low-carbon synthesised fuel, air travel is completely unsustainable, certainly at current levels. Obviously it's very useful, but so is a functioning atmosphere and sea level more or less at the current level. People need to make choices, and most seem to be trying hard not to really change anything at the moment, which is a recipie for really horrible outcomes.

    Hi Juan, thanks for a great film of my home town. Yes it is the BBC showing the Marathon, funded by the TV licence. I see that some people see fit to run the BBC down, I’d like to redress the balance. For less than £13 a month we get 7 advert free TV channels, numerous advert free national and regional radio, an on line channel and a great catch up and achieve web site; good value I say. If they were funded by advertising I doubt they would be spending that much on their outside broadcast or showing half programs they show now. You can’t watch the BBC for free overseas - except in a few places where the signal spills over - at least not legally.

      Yup, there is also BBC 4 which only broadcasts in the evening, BBC News 24 and the more specialist BBC Parliament plus CBBC and Cbeebies - both children’s channels. BBC 3 is an on line TV channel and then there are the radio stations. You should also be getting the main commercial channels, which have considerably fewer advert break than I have seen on US TV, plus freeview channels at the very least.

    Great vlog especially the points of interest in London. Also the B777 landing gear overview was excellent since its my favorite Boeing aircraft when traveling from PHX to LHR. ✈

    Pink Floyd as background music was great. London looks a lot different than it did 40 years ago.

    Cargo brings revenue too I presume? Fuel miles might change knowing that being included. I'm no pilot but I'm guessing with zero winds to and from, the time would be a tad less than with tailwind and headwinds.

    Love your channel Juan. I've never been so interested in an American spillway as I have following you. And now big airplanes too! I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.

    Trivia answer attempt: Given the same headwind there and back, a round trip with X headwind / tailwind will take just as long as a round trip with no headwind / tailwind at all.

    Every pilot I’ve ever met had a soft spot for Pink Floyd, seriously! Probably because David Gilmour is an aviator himself, owning a p51 mustang.

    I would say that the trip with the head wind leg in it would be slower that the no wind on either leg.

    Using words like "without scrubbing the wheels" when explaining the landing system are just the kind of descriptions that make your videos interesting and appealing to such a wide group of viewers. That segment alone could be used by American as part of a print ad, commercial, or a pre-flight video on the plane from the pilot to comfort hesitant passengers about the safety measures used in designing the equipment for this plane.
    Yes, I also enjoyed the flowers, information about the sites visited, and the music at the appropriate places. I suspect I'm not the only one of your subscribers who feels like we're getting to know you - or at least sees you like a relative we'd look forward to visiting us. (Of course bring your wife and kids!)
    Apart from any viewers you have on YT, these vlogs are a wonderful supplement for your wife and children to know and remember you -- and perhaps better than some husband and father who is home every night for dinner at 6 p.m. I say "perhaps" because every family and relationship is different in what their needs are and what they value in life. My comments here are not any kind of correction (far from it), they're just meant to encourage you in things you already know. Each of us just has the same 24 hours a day - no matter what our skills, health, vocation, or salary is. How we use that time shows what we value most. From someone old enough to be your mother, Juan -- and who is taking a little "journalistic freedom" here :-) -- may you and your wife always make good choices. You are appreciated.
