What is so great about seeing Leland, is that you have this feeling of approachability with him. He's adorable and appears genuine at heart. More Leland videos, please!
Years ago I worked in a gay bath house near dowtown. I was never in a bath house until I had been out for several years and it was part-time work on weekends which worked out fine for me so I took the job. It was checking guys in, taking their money, giving them their ID cards (if they were new members) dispensing a towel, buzzing the door to let them in and doing laundry. There were minimum rooms so a waiting list was available. I was told by my boss that I could use the bathhouse facilities anytime I wasn't working but after a few weeks, there was no way I was going to take off my clothes and walk around barefoot in a towel. It was a pig sty; the carpets should have been steam cleaned every week but they weren't (finding a pile of crap on the carpet wasn't anything new). They did however drain and scrub out the whirlpool which was no consolation. If a guy rented a room (extra charge) he was given a sheet and each time a room was vacated, the sheet had to be changed and those who worked there didn't enjoy that challenge because we never knew what we would find. At that time smoking was allowed in the rooms and it wasn't uncommon to find puke in the ashtray. There were 2 orgy rooms, one large, one small and those sheets got changed 1x week--should have been every day!!! There was a lounge with TV (no vending machines for condoms or snacks--this was the pre AIDS era) and an 8 mm porn night on Tuesday provided by our local bookstore. The whirlpool looked inviting with adjacent showers and for fun sometime someone would dump detergent in the water for bubbles which went everywhere. There was a work-out area on the second floor (some weights and a bench) and a sunbathing area on the roof for sunny days in the summer. The baths never closed; it was a 24/7 operation. The worst time was after the bars closed at 2:30. Then it got busy and too many of the customers were smashed leading to more complications. My motive for taking the job was of course extra money but I also thought it would be a great place to meet guys and it was but I never saw them again. A lot of married guys frequented the baths so of course dating was out of the question. It was basically a place to go to get off and nothing more. I finally quit because I couldn't take the overnight Saturday shift which was always mine. It wasn't too long afterward the AIDS epidemic hit and the baths quietly closed. The building stood empty for years and the last time I drove by, it had been demolished. I'm not sorry I took the job; it was an experience and a real eye opener.
Oh my god! You guys went to Steamworks! Haha! I recognize the flashlight since I work at the Berkeley location! & yes, Thursdays it is still lights out party! Well, at least you guys had an interesting experience :) & no, that guy was not supposed to have his camera with him, since it is all anonymous :P
Davey Wavey and Leland: you guys are great! Your take on this is hilarious! But also real and real sane. The douche anecdote followed by the Aussie followed by the Josh stalker... just wonderful!
I'm in shock! You have countless TH-cam posts and this was your 2nd bathhouse experience!? Davey, so brave and so innocent... So comfortable on the net and nervous in the dark. You get more adorable each and every time. Looking forward to your 30's! Hope you are still posting! I'll still be subscribing
These places can be quite exiting - no chatting just eye contact - the annonimity of it all - all it needs is a couple of queens mincing about the place chitty chatting to completly kill the mood
Hey guys. I found part one n two very amusing. My first job aside from working at my parents business was at a bathhouse. I’d just come out at 19. Oh the stories.
This is a pretty charming take on what is basically an anachronism. Bathhouses were a product of the gay underground which was a necessary outcome of the closet. Before Stonewall, bathhouses were a reliable way to relieve sexual frustration in an age where nobody could safely be out. Virtually every element of the bathhouse culture is conceived from the experience of the pre-Stonewall closet plus elements of the tribal gay cultures of the Seventies. When HIV appeared, that bathhouse culture became frozen in time. What we have now is that experience as it was, with some condoms added for good measure. Gay and bisexual men in the 21st Century don't really NEED bathhouses but rest assured: they are part of our history and as long as they endure, it is fantastic that younger men like you can feel free to explore confidently, safely and either return or not. It really is like visiting a living museum. Thanks for sharing your story!
Those places are disgusting whether gay or straight, guys following some newbies around take advantage of them newbies and give them HIV/STDs. People still don't use condoms, but on purpose so others can get HIV/STDs.
You know I'm kind of grateful that you posted this. I have been to a few bathhouses over my years and I have had mixed feelings. But I believe that you put it quite accurately if you're into more of the anon type of hook-ups a bathhouse will typically be your best option. Rather than to spend the time getting to know someone using Grindr or any one of the other apps.
This was so amusing. I went for the first time a couple weeks ago and I had almost the exact same experience! Definitely not for me but I loved your insight. "Grindr = 24/7 bathhouse" made me LMAO.
Every time you do a video you sign off by doing the kisses and peace out. LOL (I so need to grow up.) When you do the kisses it reminds me of this video and the bath houses...LOL Like I said I need to grow up. But you do make me smile :-) I've watched a lot of your videos and I enjoy them!
Based on what you described as the place you went, it sounds like you went to Steamworks. They are a clean bath house, & I go to the Chicago location. I would like to check out the Toronto Steamworks, as well as the Berkley, CA location. I however don't recommend Mans Country in Chicago, unless you don't mind a place that doesn't get cleaned properly. It's also run down, due to the fact that it hasn't had much work done to the place, since opening up in the 1970's. Don't know how much longer they'll be in business, as the owner of Man's Country (Chuck Renslow) is in his 80's.
The saunas are a pretty intimidating place (especially for younger guys) Best thing for newbies to do is to go with a friend on a slow night just to get the area of the place down and know where everything is. I go with clients on weekdays in the morning so I hardly see anyone. When I do, they're mainly old guys watching me shower. The black-out nights are always fun as well, although I wouldn't recommend a first timer to go on one of those nights alone.
true "lights out" could be very dangerous. steamworks in chicago has "lights out" party but the exit lights are still on and a few other low level lights. you don't need a flashlight. these guys are very inexperienced.
When Leland used the word "pop" for soft drinks, I knew I liked him. I'm from the Midwest. Davey, I enjoy longer segments with other guys. This was great. Tom
That must had been a special lights out night. That isn't the norm! It is very dim in some areas and somewhat bright in other areas. Atleast with the few bathhouses I've been to here in northern California! I'm sure it's different depending where you are.
What you didn't say is...There is bath house ediquette you should know prior to going. Go with a veteran on your first visit. If you don't know anyone, don't be afraid or embarrassed to ASK the person at the desk. That's why they're there. They will even give you a tour (depending). It doesn't have to be for sex. BHs can be inexpensive lodging when trravelling. It's not a Hilton, but it's not the streets either. Respect each other's kinks, and privacy. Learn the unspoken code of conduct.
the mistake in my eyes, is believing that there is a "good" side, or a "bad" side. Grindr, or meeting over the internet in a chat room or picking someone up in a bar carries the same risk. Safe sex is safe sex, and unsafe sex is unsafe sex, whether you're doing it anonymously, or in a loving relationship.
The bathhouse I went to in Melbourne Australia had a big video room. But it was showing films. When we arrived it was house party , then Star Trek generations which filled to capacity. That's right 50 plus guys naked in towels in a bathhouse watching Star Trek. So surreal
Oh, and about the "in a bathhouse near you"... you should visit Munich during Oktoberfest on "gay day" some time :) it's already over for this year, but as we say here: "after Oktoberfest is before Oktoberfest" ;)
You've commented like 5 times hon, we get the message. You don't like Grindr or Bathhouses and you also hate Lelan's ink and... you never stop complaining... You're being way too critical and you don't have to watch it, just saying.
Hi Daveywavey good day sorry I don't know what time is on your side am sorry if I woke you up now I would love to know now have you had your blog on TH-cam I jast need some info on a iphone I know I will need one if I upload a blog for me am Daveywavey I'm from out of town I'm in SA right now am sorry DaveyWavey I'm South Africa now I would like to know if the law and people are upset over the gay been married on your side please Daveywavey do a check please I enjoy your blog DaveyWavey alot jast the thing is my mom knows about me still I know she needs some time please need some help to make it not hard for her and me
Picturing guys at those gloryholes making those noises makes me think of hamsters asking for their water bottle with the tube and the ball at the end where the water comes out lmao!
I went to the same bathhouse you talk about in this video and I liked the experience, I'd like to go again, such a shame that if I want to do it I'd have to take a 5hrs flight :( which is not so cool
I wanna meet Leland the next time i'm in Toronto... Buffalo's only an 1 and 1/2 away... and they did a great job of describing the bathhouse they visited...
I already commented on how stereotypes should never be avoided if someone fits into a stereotype or multiple stereotypes. And as far as Davey promoting it he said it could be a good expirence to just go, he never said you have to do anything there that you don't want to do...basically try what they did to see if it's something you are into instead of avoiding them because it's stereotypical or because it's an unknown thing for you. (but of course be safe if you do decide to participate)
You didn't answer my question, though. I respectfully suggest you read The Velvet Rage: Overcoming the Pain of Growing Up Gay in a Straight Man's World by Alan Downs. He encapsulates your thinking which is very common in many gay men, the need to over-achieve, to impress, etc. It is an interesting read. As, I say, we fundamentally disagree - and yes, living in London UK, our laws are not far off equality.
no if you look very cute and young like me you are super hot in a bath house I am a dream boy for older guys I like 50 plus I look like a little teen boy but I am legal.
You right I'm not a teenager but I look very young and I love it I have gene hormone disorder I look no more than 20 you wish you had my disorder i do not age like you do i am 50 years old and I feel like 19 super energy and I bet I am more attractive than you if you were 50 and look hot like me you go crazy thats why i like 50 plus helloooo, and if you see me in the bath house you be like every body there chasing me or and in less than 2 years I have been with over 400 men every body thinks I am no older than 19 so you wish you had my disorder look at my videos and learn from an experienced probably I am older than you but I am super hot I am toy boy don't go crazy if you ever see me on the bath house. Michael Vanormer Hi
Thank you Leland and Davey for a great video clip. Lots of fun to hear you share your experience at the bathhouse. Peace and Love to both of you!!!

I'm a bit taken aback by all the negative comments. I'm a younger gay man (

I love that Davey let's Leland talk so much. If I had my own channel with so many subs I don't know if I'd be so kind.
Hey guys. I found part one n two very amusing. My first job aside from working at my parents business was at a bathhouse. I’d just come out at 19. Oh the stories.
Hey Davey...loved it. My husband is from Toronto. You did a great job of describing "the scene". Lol.
What's with the sound effect at 1:09? Is it meant to be there?

OMG did I do justice to your accent? Post the picture on my Facebook page so we can see it!
I get the feeling Davey goes to bathhouses just for recognition and praise. He doesn't even actually participate.
hes not into that sex scene
+MrJTYoung7 And that's a bad thing? Do you mean he doesn't participate in the spread of disease?
Or he’s just one of those picky gays that only likes other muscular guys
Agreed.
@@Kickballkixcereal HE CAN'T BE TOO PICKY. HE'S SO GAY, EVEN HIS ASSHOLE HAS A LISP.
Yeah right Davey - your whole existence revolves around a bathhouse.
The saunas are a pretty intimidating place (especially for younger guys)

HAHAHAHA OMG I JUST DIIIIIEEED at the "you just go up to the hole and *makes noise with mouth* and a penis comes through!!" omggg can't stop laughing!
ha ha ha my mouth is still open with the moment you started making those sounds with your mouth... ha ha ha ... I am in shock!
true "lights out" could be very dangerous. steamworks in chicago has "lights out" party but the exit lights are still on and a few other low level lights. you don't need a flashlight. these guys are very inexperienced.
Davey I HOPE you left a comment about the dush
I've never been more proud to be a prude.
AMEN. SAME.
omg.. please please please post more Leland videos.. :P
When Leland used the word "pop" for soft drinks, I knew I liked him. I'm from the Midwest.
Davey, I enjoy longer segments with other guys. This was great.
Tom
Davey's "sucking noise" sounds more like the noises the angry squirrel in the tree outside my house makes...
I love the faces you guys we're making! Hilarious!
That must had been a special lights out night. That isn't the norm! It is very dim in some areas and somewhat bright in other areas. Atleast with the few bathhouses I've been to here in northern California! I'm sure it's different depending where you are.
I was thinking by the look on Lelands face that he was soo going back then he said it hahah. Fun video guys thanks!

i like a bath house with a sun deck, a jacuzzi, steam rooms and dark rooms
When Leland says "You wanna leave something up to the imagination, right?", when he says "right" that was sooo sexy haha
Oh, and about the "in a bathhouse near you"... you should visit Munich during Oktoberfest on "gay day" some time :)
it's already over for this year, but as we say here: "after Oktoberfest is before Oktoberfest" ;)
Is Leland from Chicago? He said Pop and Washroom. Those are midwestern/Chicago terms? Just curious
Does anyone know the IG or so from leland or his surname?
Frankly, I don't believe you haven't been there often before.
I Wanna try it but I was scared to do it. NO one will go with me
You've commented like 5 times hon, we get the message. You don't like Grindr or Bathhouses and you also hate Lelan's ink and... you never stop complaining... You're being way too critical and you don't have to watch it, just saying.

Visited one with a couple of friends once just because we hadn't ever been. That sound is the most uncomfortable sound on earth.
How tall are you David? Can you and Leland make a video where you compare your heights and hug!?
Jeez Davey.... all your vlog buddies wanna get a piece of Leland!!
