      I spend longer than I should. I'm bed-bound so by the time I'm lifting on, my wife, also disabled, is to shattered to lift me off. She just holds me there until she's ready to lift me back into bed, otherwise I fall off. Sometimes I go numb with sitting so long.

    When I was hospitalized for complications from foot injury, and I was completely non-weight bearing, the wanted to put that elevated seat on the toilet, because I'm really tall. I told them no way, it's difficult to poop when your feet are dangling. I told the nurses the best way to have a BM is to get your knees a little above your hips... I said, "You know, the squatty potty position." They all looked at me as though I was insane! One, only ONE, understood.

      I'd be willing to bet there are quite a few doctors that don't even know this. I'm almost 50 and just learned that a woman's fertilized egg can end up completely outside of the female reproductive organs and basically float around and attach to any organ in the abdominal cavity. I've even went through pregnancy and birth and never once did they talk about this in the birthing classes. Who knows, maybe I got up to use the restroom during that part of the presentation lol

    I actually researched this many years ago as I was always very very constipated ( doctors kept telling me I had IBS) and noticed people in countries like Africa, Middle East and India didn't seam to have this issue. Some random programme on the TV the once asked how they went to the toilet and it was explained. So I made a small stool ( this is before the sale of them now) to put my feet on when dropping the kids off and it worked to a degree. Now years later I discovered there was a medical reason for my issue too which is a rare situation as I had a Fetus in Fetu attached to the lining of my bowel with it's own blood supply ( I looked pregnant). It had grown so big it was pressing on my intestines and causing the slow movement but it's final reason for removal was at the age of 35 years old it had twisted on itself which became a medical emergency. That was 15 years ago now, I still use the stool and no further issues. On rare occasions when I drink caffeine though without too much info it becomes a race to the toilet🤣🤣🤣!

    Another great video Dr Karen, it as chock full of info, (after a colonoscopy on Friday I’m finding it hard not add in many disgusting poo jokes). I can attest as someone with stage 4 pancan and now Ischemia, noone should ever underestimate a good poo. I am only 41 and have no reason why this has happened to me, I leave all the young doctors I meet shit-scared and old ones shaking there heads remembering that life’s a b***. You did miss one tip though. Moving helps a movement. I’m off now to go for a 2am jog around Hospital to try and bring up some fancy kombucha burps, the sort I used to pay my middle class milkman for, before I got so lucky. Anyway keep up the good work, and I mean that, the videos brilliant on every level, they make me laugh out loud and I have never seen anyone surpass your level of vocab on the trouser snake.

    I'm from India. People don't only feel pressure after coffee, but also after smoking or tea or a bite of meal or chewing mouth freshner, or even starting a video game in the morning, depending on the person's daily habit. I'd like to say it's psychological.

    • @borgesiantofu
      @borgesiantofu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      All of the things you've mentioned actually promote gut motility, so it's not psychological at all. Eating triggers gastrocolic reflex, chewing increases gastric motility and nicotine like many other stimulants affects bowel movements.

    TLDR: constipation is indeed a symptom of lactose intolerance, and it is not just the classic diarrhea.
    I was forced to drink cow's milk growing up in the 90's, I was initially mildly allergic, but were told by medical professionals to keep me drinking it so I would "get used to it". I grew up thinking constipation was normal, and my parents just thought I was not drinking enough water, or any of the other reasons provided in the video, as a kid but nothing worked.
    A couple years ago after reading a research article about an experiment studying the effects of methane on the digestive system (it slows the process down), I then dug further and found out that methane can come from undigested lactose fermenting in the digestive system, which made me think I probably had lactose intolerance from birth.
    I then tried almond milk, enjoying the milk alternative options that were not available 15 years ago, for the first time... and that was when I knew how a normal bowel movement should be; painless.
    I am sharing my story in hopes that I can help anyone who might be in the same shoes as I was.

    The main reason I'm dropping my loads at home is because I can't get no privacy unless the door locks usually however, even when the door does lock I end up having to deal with constant disturbances
    Like the dreaded knock on the door, giggle of the Handel or even noises you generally don't wanna hear like if the bathroom you are in has another stall someone dropping a load next to you or that one person who just has to take their important business conversation in the bathroom, I have even had people back in my school days ( traumatizing ) trying to peak over the stall.
    Other reasons include but are not limited to unsanitary conditions, lack of proper butt wipe or no soap in the dispenser for after. On that note unless it's a poomergency ( I really need to go and fast) my poos are taken at home.

    For the last thing you mentioned, Islam actually suggests people to be in the squatting position when you do the business. That's why toilets on Turkey specificly(i dont know the restof the world) has toilets like that where you need to squat instead of sitting. Also we have taharet tap and you use it to clean the mess on your body. So Islam is really specific about humans being clean. Hope this helps 😊

    ******* Here's a quite important question ********
    I'm wondering what you might suggest for my 17 year old daughter. She's had chronic diarrhoea since birth basically. We were told it's toddler diarrhoea and she'd grow out of, but never did. She's had loafs of blood tests and is all clear for anything like celiac. She's been sent over and over again to a dietitian who would always remove things such as dariy, or wheat, etc from her diet but things only improved a very very tiny amount with the removal of gluten so it wasn't worth paying extra money we don't have for specialist food which really changed nothing. No matter how many time we took her back to the consultant nothing better was done and nothing came of making food diaries for a dietitian who soon ran out of ideas.
    So she's just living with it now, but it's really hard. She's always needed a toilet pass in school and now college so she can just run out of class when needed. She has a lot of anxiety about it as she's super uncomfortable going anywhere she's doesn't know where a toilet is. Some days arnt to bad but she can easily go up to 10 times in a day, though 5-6 can be an average. And ideas would be so much help and she'd be so thankful for your time. Me also xxx

I just have a problem with wheat so aftervyears of trying to avoid it and hate everything I ate I gave up and just limit what I eat that upsets my insides. She dies now too. She eats more rice or rice noodles. But what her overall intake is like atm I can't really say anymore. I'll give your advice to her. And again thank you 😊

  • @dawnriddler
    @dawnriddler ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I was never able to completely go in one go. Although, I never measured my fiber intake, but now I realise that on a good day I eat about 20g and on a regular day 10g. So that could be my issue. I do drink coffee sometimes when I can't go, it does help. So does running, other physical activity not so much.

    I visited a friend hundreds of miles away. Every morning he got up early to shower and go to work. That didn’t wake me up. His loud, almost screams did. The poor many was in daily agony. I knew he had a protein and fat rich diet. He also liked baked goods. No fibre to speak of. At any meal. (We are out a lot... but he did make a glorious supper for all of us once... with some kind of baked biscuit I’d never seen before)
    My heart went out to him. But I kept silent on the fibre issues. The locals had been over it enough with him. He needed control of his diet more than painless passings.
    I hope he’s okay.

Waking your bowels up after spinal fusion surgery is pretty bad. If you didn't have a empty bowel before the fusion it will be impacted.

    On an Air Canada flight a very chatty steward told me that there was a flurry of activity of people needing to use the toilet directly after the meals were served. I believe it was pressure in the stomach taking up more space inside is noticed by the gut and it reacts by voiding what it can. An evolutionary requirement for individual success because you have to make it past the pinch points. Where the gaps between meals are the largest and those that don’t min-max this don’t survive to pass on genes.
    So. It’s evolution you can thank for the urge to void after a meal. Thank you evolution !
