1959 British film based on the novel, of the same name, by A. J. Cronin. It was directed by Jack Cardiff and stars Van Johnson and Vera Miles.
The film tells the story of Paul Mathry, a man who left Britain for the United States as a child evacuee, and who returns to Liverpooltwenty years later. Believing his father, Patrick, had died a war hero, he is shocked to discover he is alive and serving a life sentence in prison for murder. Paul embarks upon his own investigation and finds the true culprit, clearing his father's name.

I ran into Van Johnson years ago at my doctor's appointment I had with pulmonary physician in midtown Manhattan. Van Johnson was so surprised that I, an African American woman decades younger recognized him [ he was in his 80s by then ] I am a fan of old movies; We hugged and chatted, he was so friendly, he gave me a kiss on the cheek as we said goodbye. I remember thinking, when you age, it means so much that you are treated with love and respect. He was tall and had a cute face full of freckles, wearing an ascot and a houndstooth jacket, handsome in his later years.

He had an extensive screen career and I read recently when he was much older than in this film that he was in some episodes of 'Murder, She Wrote' with Angela Lansbury. She was credited with a role in a Van Johnson film of 1953 'Remains To Be Seen' another great older film.

A real delight to discover this film. The story goes along at a great pace and carries you along. Exactly what you want from a film!
Trivia: I was amazed to see that distinctive oval spiral staircase at 1.16.19. Only the other night I had seen it also turn up in the 1952 film "Miss Robin Hood" starring Margaret Rutherford! (1.02.11) The entrance foyers do not appear to match in both films, perhaps thanks to cutting, but the staircase is exactly the same. I wonder where it was, and if it featured in other films?

Van Johnson (1916 - 2008) was the embodiment of the wholesome boy next door American stereotype which made him a hugely popular in the 1940s and 1950s especially in war movies such as Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo - it was ironic that injuries from a car accident exempted him for actual war service. After a stage career he appeared in his first film (uncredited) in 1940, Too Many Girls and his last, Three Days to a Kill, was in 1992. By 1945 he was tied with Bing Crosby as the most popular Hollywood star and his big breakthrough came in Two Girls And A Sailor (1944). He was never out of work and he once joked that he did so many war movies one after the other that sometimes he forgot what branch of the military he was supposed to be in. A memorable role came with The Caine Mutiny (1954) and he refused to cover up his facial scars (from that road accident) for the role saying that it made his character more believable. It is often forgotten that he also appeared in many musicals such as The Pied Piper of Hamelin (1957) which was a spectacular success. He so-starred with Judy Garland in In The Good Old Summertime (1949) which was the first screen appearance of Garland's daughter, Liza Minelli. Ironically, for the imagined "all American boy", Van Johnson was gay at a time when it had to be covered up and in 1947 he married actress Eve Abbott (1914 - 2004). A statement by her issued after her death said, "They needed their big star to be married to quell rumours about his sexuality and unfortunately I was it." At the time of his death he was one of the last matinee idols of Hollywood's "Golden Era".

      Since 1959:
      1. *Mental health studies have shown that being positive makes one happier*
      2. Cars are engineered more safely. They absorb a greater force of impact and safety glass is now required for all car windshields.
      3. Kevlar was invented and has saved 1000s of lives.
      4. There are a greater variety of jobs for women beyond maid, waitress, secretary or nurse. (all honorable occupations).
      5. The answering machine was invented. Do you have any idea how difficult it was to reach people back in the day?
      6. The Institutional Review Board was established to prevent unethical research on humans.
      7. Car seats for infants and children are not only required, but constructed better than in the 1980s.
      8. Effective mammograms.
      9. House insulation has improved.
      10. X-ray fluoroscope machines have been outlawed.

I thought Leo was brilliant in the 1987 Australian film-- "Travelling North." If you haven't seen it I highly recommend.

Van Johnson was way too old to play the part, but he was very good anyway.

Isn't that kid old enough to bathe himself??

    • @15thstreet60
      @15thstreet60 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Maybe so - but some kids forget to wash behind their ears. And it was in another time and space to where we are today - I found with my children that they let you know when they are ready to move from infancy to being an older young child when it came to matters of privacy if that is what you are referring too?

Yeah, when I was that age I would never have let my mother even come into the room when I was taking a bath

your forgetting the era 1940s when families were close and mothers were proud of their kids, they were lucky to have a real bath, when i was that age we bathed in tin bath in front of the coal fire in the 1960s

Overly pampering let the kid learn but inspect his ankles and why behind the ears? they never get dirty. I used ti spalsh the sponge around and wet my hair and make sure ankles and obvious dirt on face was clean and lots of soap to make me smell nice was enough to get thru mums inspection. This scene is uneccesary, not soapy, but soppy.

Why does the adult Paul Mathry speak with an American accent?
Just because he spent some time in the States doesn't mean he forgot his native accent. He was already well grown when his father disappeared.
Probably Van Johnson couldn't, or wouldn't, speak in a British accent.

Wow! I’m surprised the scene where “Dad” had obviously rented a guy in drag made it past the censors!!!! Especially while Dad was lying face-down on the bed crying “NO!” I felt so bad for him. Good film. TYSM!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💕🙏🙋‍♀️

1959's Liverpool swamped by home-county types and cockneys, not a scouse accent in sight. No wonder The Beatles fled to Hamburg!
