An "A" mystery made with a professional retinue. This ensemble knew their personas. Better than par on the photography. Laird Cregar was an perfect antagonist. I see Mae Beatty still had a job. Betty Grable was a beauty! This movie was my parent's generation. I feel such a yearning seeing these clothes, hair styles, and the set's accoutrements.
Victor Mature; My mom told me about him when I was about 8 years old then started watching his movies and became a fan. Still am 57 years later. Good flick, Tku for post.
Thank you Isabella for posting this movie. Haven't watched it for years. Carole Landis was the epitome of glamor. Sad that she took her life over a failed romance. Like Marlyn Monroe she'll always remain beautiful in the minds of those who admired her. I was born a few years before her death. Also the scene where Betty Grable and Victor Mature went swimming was called the plunge at the NuPike Amusement park in Long Beach. I went swimming there as a young boy many times.
Great crime drama. Carole Landis, beautiful actress, died about 8 years after this release at 29 yers old. Victor Mature, anothe great actor, and of course the other pin-up beauty Betty Grable. Great plot, easy to follow, and even includes the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow, very popular at the time.
That desk clerk, I forget his name but he was great in house on haunted hill with Vincent price, he was in a lot of movies, great character actor. Thank you for the movie.
Jeez, You don't recognize Elisha Cook Jr.? A very famous character actor. Probably in at least 100 films. The Maltese Falcon with Bogart, Shane with Jack Palance et al
Yes, this was a great crime drama. I never cared for Carol Landis, but Betty Grable in a nice dramatic role is spot on. I don't know why Betty had doubts about her dramatic ability. She showcases it very well in this suspense flick with the handsome Victor Mature. The same film was remade as Vicki in the mid-50's and starred Jean Peters in the title role of 'Vicki' with Jeanne Crain as her beleaguered sister. Ms. Peters walked away with all the honors of this film, which even today is considered top film noire. Another top-class performance from Ms. Peters came with 'Pickup on South Street' with badman Richard Widmark. Each of these films displayed her versatility as a very capable actress.
It took me 10 mins to realise I'd seen this same storyline before. The film, Viki, made just 2-3 years later, with Richard Boone as the bad cop. and Jean Peters. Betty Grable was great - no wonder she became the G.I.'s favourite pin up of WW2. The kind of lady a man would love to have a family with, rather than lust over, like most of the Golden Age beauties. Anyone notice Mature had a cigarette in his fingers as he was about to dive into the pool with Grable! Like many, I love the old black and whites. So many had great stories and were put together so well...
I had seen this movie recently but it was a different version with different actors. Both versions of this movie were good. Betty Grable was so beautiful with those big doe eyes, pouty lips, and that sweet voice. Carol Landis was pretty as well, but next to Grable her beauty looks ordinary. And Victor Mature sure was young, handsome and fit in this movie. Thanks for posting.
Vicki (from 1953) was an extremely close remake - there's one or two differences, but very few - the same script. I thought Richard Boone (in the remake) was a little more sympathetic - a great cop who's struggling with something for the first time. Laird Cregar just looks like a heel. Both actors were convincing the way they played the role, though!
Plot Glamorous starlet Vicky Lynn (Carole Landis) is murdered, and the cops want to pin the killing on her manager, fast-talking Frankie Christopher (Victor Mature). But the more Vicky's sensible sister, Jill (Betty Grable), finds out about Frankie, the less she suspects him of the crime. As Jill and Frankie fall in love, the detective in charge of the case (Laird Cregar) develops a morbid obsession with punishing Frankie, leading to a shocking conclusion.
I wouldn't call Victor Mature handsome, but he sure had a nice, masculine build in that swim suit scene & was a really good actor. Good story line, though I thought it was the bad cop all along up until they nailed the little desk clerk.
You really need to cut back on the pop-up ads if you want me to watch this. It's impossible to enjoy anything when its being interrupted every few minutes.
Very interesting movie with "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" playing in the background. My ideas about a remake of this movie which should have been filmed twenty five years ago, featuring the British actor named Stephen Fry in the role of that intimidating detective wearing the squeaky shoes.
Cropped. Movie theaters used to do this when they could not get real wide screen movies are were not equipped to show them. Too bad the poster had to do it. No wide screen in 1941.
The only Betty Grable movie I can watch over & over again; but the incessant use of Alfred Newman's "Street Scene" theme & "Over The Rainbow" for the score, drive me crazy!
True. Actors learned their lines & didn't waste directors time w/ one retake after another. Acting was a truly a professional discipline. I honestly believe just about anybody could be an actor today.
Does anyone else see the great resemblance of Victor Mature, and Mark Harmon? The comments here are informative. That detective was so repulsively over the top… Great twist at the end. I’d never seen this. Victor Mature was a hottie. Such beautiful wavy hair,,,,
@@janegarner6739 It was played over and over and over and over all thru-out the entire film, Why?????? That was the only thing I didn't like about this movie.

The sad but truthfully side of this movie is that LE today treated citizens with this holy than thou attitude. Having Qualified Immunity just over inflates their Ego. By not holding this welfare recipients accountable it puts more of a tax burden on the citizens that are forced to pay for these injustices in the first place. Why is it that those that in LE will make up laws or be completely ignorant of the laws they are supposed to uphold? In fact purposely violate a citizen rights knowing it has very little chance of hold the welfare recipient accountable. It takes someone in government to come up with this lack of accountability to not be held accountable. Disgraceful

😢, I always Google the early film actresses . Heartbroken when I saw that she committed suicide at the young age of only 29. May she rest in peace 🙏

Tragically committed suicide. A real beauty and talented actress.
Don’t forget the awesome Laird Cregar. 😊
@williammasselink yeah over another actor who was married I think.
This is a great version of "I Wake Up Screaming", the best actors (I love Victor Mature), directed well, produced well. Thank you for showing it!!😊
Betty Grable was so beautiful, early death from cigarettes, R.I.P.

Interesting that Somewhere Over the Rainbow plays in the background only 2 years after it was written for a different movie
Just saw this movie about 2 or 3 years ago but couldn't remember who done it. Thank you for the remembrance ❤

Those closeups at 4:10 and 4:14 of Carole Landis, she was something

I will MISS LARID C..he was Brilliance..
Carole Landis was absolutely lovely. Her fault was picking bad men. R.I.P. Carole.

I've adored Carole for several years.
And Brooke Shields so resembles her. I think Jean Peters was such a natural beauty. Also in Niagara with Marilyn!
Actors that knew how to act....grand movie
Betty was such an honest, open actress. Her talent was much more than a pair of legs 🦵

You can download these and watch them without adds.
There are sites where you can watch old movies like this without the interruption of commercials.
If you're on android, get youtube vanced, no ads, and pip.
You need a different browser.
