    Considering BoA was still just 13 when she debuted and it still seems to be considered the "norm" today, almost 23 years later, I'm not convinced the industry will ever change sadly. I think the best we can hope for is that the companies have learned from previous generations and have support structures in place to be there for the younger members when they need it. As a Blackjack, my faith in YG's ability to do that is somewhat lacking, but I will be very happy to be proved wrong 'cause it's undeniable that these girls are incredibly talented and they deserve a shot.
    On a more positive note, for me Pharita absolutely blew me away with her performance with Haram in a close second.

    Good to see your thoughtful review. These girls are not only super talented, they are passionate about their art, highly disciplined, especially the youngest of them, who have been pursuing their goals and accomplished much even before becoming trainees. I get the sense that they are having a great time in each other's company. I can picture them working together on their choreo. I think it would be so unfair to them to tell them they have to wait 2 more years to debut, or that they should debut without the youngest, who will be a very important part of their ensemble. There's a lot of strength when you have a team where all are of this high caliber.
    Someone pointed out that a phrase in Ruka's rap was "YG 3G" and guessed that this referred to YG's slow pace... if true, it means they're really impatient to get it on!
    Will there be exploitation or even child abuse? Not unknown in kpop. As you say, everyone should be watching out to see that this doesn't happen. Then there's the stress of being an idol, meeting expectations, beauty standards, intense schedules and all the rest, not to mention the ever-present haters waiting to pounce and disrespect. I don't think it will help lessen the stress to prolong a broad public conversation about whether they are too young.
    I know that some sports allow child athletes to become professional, but carve out special regulations, like restricting the number of tournaments they can play in a season, making sure they can get a good education, etc.

  • @nanis530
    @nanis530 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It's been so hard for them, leaving their homes, countries, families, their friends, learning a new language to communicate, spending their entire childhood training, that I don't understand how many people hate them just for being the next girl group of YG, if the entertainment industry is tough I hope people don't make it worse

  • @mikkj1
    @mikkj1 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I think that the issue - with Kpop - is that there are no legal guardrails. In the U.S., there are laws about how long child actors can work, how they must be treated, insuring that they get their education, etc. Of course, that doesn't always work, but it's far better than it used to be.
    My opinion, for what it's worth, is that the first step would be to insist upon such laws in S. Korea. Right now, there don't seem to be any regulations protecting these kids from stress, overwork, hate, etc. My hope for Baby Monster is that YG learned from what Blackpink went through and will build a bigger wall around these young women. Plus, I'm sure that the BP members would be available to offer their experience and advice.
    I agree that it's a tricky balance - you don't want to crush someone's dream, but you don't want to ruin their future either. The best were ever going to do, given the amount of money involved, is to insist on legal protections for child performers and insist on enforcement of same.

    It is a difficult but if you also see how good they are especially CHIQUITA w/ stage presence? (at her age like this topic) Like you said, they are young but they can make their dreams happen despite their age. In the same fact, if you were in their place and that they have to wait more before debutting just because of when they were born. It kinda sucks.

    If I am YG myself or any upper position in YG and seeing these kids/teens talents, I probably be also not minding their age. Yes, it is kind of exploiting them. But the mere fact that being able to debut as an idol is their girls wanted when they are still young (yeah technically they are still young today 😅) I will make it happen considering how talented they already are at this young age. That is what the girls wants and their parents supported them. That is why their names really suits them "BABYmonster". Lol. Also, BaeMon members are not the only idols who debuted this early. Actually, even in 2nd gen. and in first gen. there are already minors that debuted as an idol. So, I guess it is kind of got normalize, tho it shouldn't be. Probably, why YG said to their introduction to BaeMon that we should judge this group through what we sees and hears.

    Personally hoping what happened with nmixx wont happen with baby monster bcus both pre debut content was so good. Also its concerning how young they are because of how harsh the industry is no one is hating on them by talking about their age + we all know how sexualized they might become it is not hate its genuine concern. My problem is how people will be worried over their age but then 4months into their career they wont care at all. That happened with New jeans, leeseo, and classy. The maknae of baby monster will be the same age as new jeans and classy maknaes when they debut (a few months after their 14th birthday) but look at the fanbase now no one talks about that. The kpop industry has and will always debut 14 year olds its a horrible thing but its something we cannot stop but we can talk about it. I wish people would stay consistent on their opinion of underaged idols but as we know a few months after their debut no one will care about Chiquita's age I just wish the people who are going to do that would not act like they have a problem with it if theyre just gonna switch up in a few months. Anyways the girls are really talented the age gap between the youngest and oldest member is also interesting (20 and 13 developmentally is an age gap when theyre older it wont feel like that but rn to me thats a gap) but Im so glad theyre debuting Ruka bcus some companies literally stop after they turn 20 as of rn I think shes my top 3 bias's but not sure will have to wait for their debut

    I think disney has shown us all that introducing children into this type of world is not such a good idea, and kpop is like even more harsh so I get it, but at the same time bcs this industry is so competitive, maybe if YG didn't debut chiquita bcs of her age, she wouldn't be able to debut later on, she is good but even yedam had to stick to the company timing. And this is not just YG, is every company, they wont care about the age of a person if they think she/he can be profitable bcs anyways, the younger, the longer they can be in the industry, just look at queen IU

    What's your opinion on child actors /models?

    • @SafeCave
      @SafeCave  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think they're subjected to incredibly difficult and harsh industries from a young and very impressionable age. I think a not insignificant amount of them end up struggling with mental illnesses, drug and alcohol addictions, eating disorders and more by the time they reach their late teens/early adulthood. And I think some of them are absolutely fine. Same as with idols. But here's the thing, in this video I'm not talking about child actors/models. I'm talking about idols. Because I'm a kpop fan. Yes there's every possibility that young idols grow up with zero issues and that's great. Yes adult idols can end up experiencing those things regardless of the age they debut. But if I were a parent would I want my kid exposed to harsh critiques from the industry and fans alike? Would I want them to be sexualised before they've even finished going through puberty? No I wouldn't. I'm not gonna fight every fight and comment on every difficult and complex issue in the world because that's exhausting. But this is something I can and will continue to comment on because it's directly in line with something I have a vested interest in. If you don't have an issue that's your deal, you do what you feel is right. Continuing this conversation is what *I* feel is right and I hope people will respect that. I went on a tangent there but you get it lmao

      People act like they forced to sing.
      All members gave audition, trained for years and finally have their debut.
      People who have problems with age are usually the one who think of them as objects of entertainment ( like looks, and being cute) and not as a artists who sings.
      Nobody thought about Billie eilish age when she releases her first song, people who liked it listenerd to it. There was no talk like she is good but she is young so I will not listen to her music.

    3:42 I'd say voice our concern isn't the best thing to do. When voicing our concerns but still consuming the content (and therefor giving the companies what they want, money), it shows that it doesnt really matter for them whether they debut kids or adults. The best thing to do would be to boycott those debuts. Yes they already are gonna debut and there's nothing we can do about it, but if they are succesful, more minors will be debuted in the future because companies find out they can get away with it. The idols already debuted that are literal kids can disband and redebut when they are older, it's not like if their group now doesn't do well they have no chance in the industry ever again. But we as kpop fans should consider that with every stream and every bought album we are showing that it'll be a good idea for companies to debut these young kids, making it more and more normalized and also more harmful for these still developing kids to grow up in that industry

    • @SafeCave
      @SafeCave  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      While to an extent I do agree with you, I don't think that approach is realistic for this group. Because they're from YG. Maybe if they were coming from a smaller company, sure you could perhaps rally enough people to boycott in a way that would make an impact but the fact is, people are gonna pay attention to them because they're YG, they're gonna support them because they're talented and from YG, they're gonna stream the music because they'll be intrigued because they're YG and this is their first girl group in almost 7 years. If people decide to boycott then all the power to them, I don't blame them. But to think that that's gonna make a dent on YG enough to shelve the group and maybe they re-debut later down the line? Very very very slim chance. When I say the best we can do is voice our concern and keep the conversation going, I'm not talking about stopping BabyMonster's debut. I'm talking about maybe eventually the conversation being loud enough that in the future we see a shift and a change. This is not something that's going to happen soon. We're gonna keep seeing kids debut and people are gonna keep supporting the groups because damn those kids are talented. It's happened for literal decades at this point and it will keep happening. And we as fans have to keep shouting about it. And yes if possible, boycott. But I highly doubt a boycott will impact this group's career in the slightest

    • @Thil
      @Thil ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SafeCave I do agree that with YG as well as with Hybe with New Jeans it's not realistic, but I do think talking about the idea of boycotting a debut is good cause it gives people the idea for future debuts from smaller companies that can be prevented.
      I think the most important thing though is like you said, keeping those who do debut and aren't gonna be shelfed safe from the hate and from predatory "fans"
