My mom just asked me what I'm watching so I just spend like 10 minutes explaining to her who Jack Kirby was.

Is impressive how a guy can be so pragmatic in confronting the problems of his time yet now 50 years later we still dealing with the same old shit

That's history for you. Culturally? We're basically still dealing with issues they were dealing with back in the Roman Republic. Only the names and dates have changed. The disconnect stems from the fact that individually a person can change their opinions quickly, but a mass of people? Culture changes according to the lowest common denominator. N I use "lowest" solely with it's mathematical definition.

If Kirby were still alive around that SC ruling "Citizens United" and to hear Mitt Romney around 2011 or so, chuckle and rebuff someone at a rally "Corporations are people my friend"...I know my skin crawled at that line, I could only imagine he was spinning in his grave. :-(

I hope Ram Vs New Gods doesnt back away from the political messages. Theres a lot to be said about the current world and I hope it isnt hand waved at all

I agree, but considering his messaging in his Swamp Thing run, I have full faith! That was actually the reason I wanted him to write New Gods!

That is so crazy how he took a character as simple as Jimmy Olsen and turned it into one of the greatest epics/events in comic book history!!!

Wow this is incredible. I've never heard the fourth world explained so well. I learned a great deal from this video and while I wasn't anywhere near an expert I knew more than the average guy about this. While I had seen many levels to the story and ideas you have added greatly to my understanding and enjoyment. Thank you for this I have subscribed without even checking the other videos but I am certainly looking forward to them

Thank you! I definitely feel like the saga is one that is relatively understood, but I wanted to highlight some of the aspects that make it so influential and hopefully allow for others to be interested to explore!

@@ComicKrackle well you definitely have my vote I guess it's fair to say super powers cartoon and toys combined with the who's who entries were my first exposure but I later got on a big Kirby kick like most fans in the 90s and bought the collections and was floored. Since then I've tried to catch them where I can and consider Walt Simonson's Orion one of the few successes. You showed me several more levels and again I thank you 🙏😊

Kirby was an infinitely greater writer than Stan Lee.

Depending on who you ask, Jack already did 75% of his work with Stan, so you’re not wrong!

Fantastic Video. I respect your knowledge on the topic of Superhero comics. Very nice break down of the Fourth World and your explanation of the Anti Life Equation was fantastic. We need more channels that have intelligent and thoughtful exploration of comic books. Great work!

In my recollection these comics were way over my head. In fact at the age of 12 I stopped reading comic books all together. Sports and girls took over the top spot. Still looking back on them I remember trying real hard to get with them because I worshipped Jack Kirby. It was the cartoon version of the Justice League that got me looking at the mythology again. (Of all places) Those were probably the best cartoons ever made. Well except for the Power Puff Girls. But I must say I find the stories interesting today. I wouldn't mind revisiting them and reading from an adult perspective. Good stuff dude.

Your first line of commentary was the most important. Kirby? Not subtle. Who's the guy set apart on New Genesis? Lonar. Who's the torturer? DeSaad.
And then, while dealing with a wonky keyboard to write this comment it struck me: What exactly is subtle about Superman or Wonder Woman as character names and descriptions. I owe an apology to his memory.

Thanks for your whirl wind tour of Napoleon's life which was very informative. Alas the Scott movie was a pyrrhic triumph of style over substance.
I do wonder what Kubirck's Napoleon would have been like. Apparently Scott looked at his research materials and then presumably ignored them all.

You can do that when you are at that level. He has three Oscars to back him up while Kubrick is of a different time with ideas that might not work today. Still both are control freaks and sometimes that's not a good thing.

"Jack Kirby hated two things: Nazis, and Corporations."
    Unfathomably based.

Jack made some amazing comics, but I'm afraid he was just a little too over-the-top with his political allegory. Or maybe I was just a dense kid when I read them way back when and missed the point. But I especially liked Kirby's OMAC comic book series. And while I could see how businesses and money and greed could help create such a dystopian future, it was far from obvious, to me anyway, that capitalism inevitably leads to this.

Joke: ew disgusting politics in my superhero comics. joking aside, you kinda have the anti-life equation type of idea in Ram V's run of detective comics - with the reality warping machine the main villain faction uses to control all of gotham

If you believe that a Televangelist Extremist consulting Nixon is indicative of all Christians, and you choose to believe that is anti-Christian, it says more about you than him.
In the video, I highlight Kirby’s distaste for business owners exploiting their workers because it routinely happened to him. It says a lot that you side with business owners over workers.
