"Ahead of his time" is right. I would have been so down for Mignola's Thor, if it aired alongside the X-Men and Spider-Man cartoons of the 90s. Ironically, Genndy Tartakovsky would later go on to a successful career employing a similarly angular aesthetic. Samurai Jack and Primal made especially good use of those bold, hard shapes and deep black shadows.
I greatly appreciate you sharing this with us. Mike Mignola has such a gloriously elegant style. He conveys so much character in such an economy of lines.
@@CordellPotts yikes, I used a poor choice of tense on my comment. It has been corrected. Appreciate the feedback. No slight to Mr. Mignola’s health intended. 😬
That animated clip at the end was painful. Not sure if it was the artists being unused to working in that style, or if it there was pressure to bring it more in line with expected cartoon aesthetics of the time, but either way mignola's work was almost completely lost in translation.
Wow! We have all of these amazing angular, moody designs, I wonder how should we shade and color them? Soft, blurry shadows and high saturation colors, of course! 🥲
look at my avatar, look who i cosplay as..........why the fuk haven't they made this?!? i'd camp outside all night just to be in line to get tickets to the show or to the 4KUHD of this movie or tv show! tell the bean counters to get it done!!!!!!
There are worse ideas in the world than having a full hardcover adaptation of this sitting next to Simonson's _Ragnarok_ on Our shelf. We would even "settle" for Christopher Golden's _The Bones of Giants_ in full comic format...
. I think the animation is Still not enough " Mignola-Like " in Style . It looks Too " Soft " & Candy Ass . Bright Eyed & Bushy Tailed Bull Shit . It needs to be " Darker " . . .. . . . In My Opinion ONLY .. . . .. .
Why would you want to get away from Marvel with Jack Kirby, Walter Simonson, John Romita Jr. and company? I love Mike Mignola, but let him do versions of the comic!
Everytime Mike mignolas art gets faithfully translated into animation an angel gets its wings
goddammit, Billy, now you've gone and pointed out all those embarrassed angels! 😧
@@nbell63 I love how you refer to me as Billy lmfao
It seemed polite.
(And entirely normal given I've got both an Uncle Bill and a nephew Billy) 😊
I give you the pilot of Screw On Head, which is literally the one-off animated - with extra jokes!
Damn, we were robbed. I would have taken it a step further and made it even more in line with Mignola's chunky designs. Such an awesome video
Some of the Mignola's art style DNA did get carried over to the Thor: Tales of Asgard animated movie.
I would've scraped the animation all together and just make a comic! That concept art is beautiful!!!

He's still alive and working.

I love Mike Mignola’s Art and passion for mythology. I can’t believe Marvel didn’t think this was a good idea.
Mike Mignola's style would be great if they were animated by Studio 4'C from Japan, because of their similar angular lines & styles.
I’d watch the heck out of this series with Mike’s designs!
I have to say, whoever did the color correction on this video was spot on. Perfect for Mike’s artwork.
Thank you for sharing this. Even if we don’t get the animation seeing Mike’s sketches are priceless.
That is awesome!!! Would have loved that cartoon!
Love Mignola’s work! First saw it with his work on X-Force! I would’ve loved this vision of Thor to have been a reality!
The Mignola design aesthetic notwithstanding,
the animation itself elicits two strong childhood echoes:
1. Alex Toth's turn with 60s Hanna-Barbera; &
2. (equally Hanna-Barbera) Mighty *Miiigh-TORRR!!!*
This is so cool! I'm a huge Mignola fan and never even knew about this.
This reminds me of Middle School when my friend and me made pictures for the imaginary world we drew onto paper
why did they have to cancel such a good idea, it could have been on same level as the Spectacular Spider - Man.
I would love to have a Thor comic or animated series based on the original myths.
The screw on head pilot is a good example of his art being animated
Damn this art is amazing wish I could get some cool prints of these to hang up
What a great story!
Valhalla is incredible ❤
Awesome!🙌🏼🙌🏼✨💎
The only clip of this that ever aired was during a Fabio appearance on the Daily Show
i want this show so Bad!!!!!!
That was great!!
I would be happy with Hellboy animated movies. In mikes style. Just turn the comic volumes in to movies they are already great slides
The animation missed out on the genius of Mike Mignola’s design philosophy.
Love what I seen here. Still could in hopes come true! Never give up.... crowdfunding dudes.
Very nice indeed. Though I'm not so keen on the gimmicky hammer.
I was like, “On the bed with Fabio….?”
Yeah, exactly. Never thought a Mignola documentary would have this much Fabio 😂
I’m gonna cry now
Honestly, I feel like whatever imagined show we have in our heads is better than anything that would have been made back then
its not too late they are all alive still
mike mignola, the animated series.

You nailed it. I completely cringed seeing that.
Little boy Thor looks like Mighty Max
Well, get it made now
😮❤
Does this work by Mike also exist as a hardcover graphic novel ? I would love to own Mike's work on this in that format. Please

look at my avatar, look who i cosplay as..........why the fuk haven't they made this?!? i'd camp outside all night just to be in line to get tickets to the show or to the 4KUHD of this movie or tv show! tell the bean counters to get it done!!!!!!
As much as I don't like Chris Hemsworth as Thor, thank God Fabio didn't get a chance to further embarrass the character.
"...and I look over and I'm sitting on the bed next to Fabio"
not many people can say that... then again, it's Fabio.
Or not many would admit it!
I wonder if the Fabio show concept somehow inspired the Hercules show
I can't believe it's not thunder.

Well, shit. Now I wish they'd have made this!
Can they still?
No.
I imagine it kinda like primal but with thor and mikes style as a showw 😢
Awesome content, thanks. God bless. Jesus loves you!
Setting on the bed next to Fabio? 😂
I bet they can try to do it now
Anyone seen the old, danish animation movie, Valhalla? You might like it 😊
It's interesting. Its a shame the designs didn't get the heavy inking.
Eyy
We were robbed
Uuuuuuugh Mignola keeps getting the short end every time he tries to come up with a series 🙄 give the guy a damn chance shit!!!!!!
Gets Mike Mignola designs, animation uses airbrush to shade those shapes..
. I think the animation is Still not enough " Mignola-Like " in Style . It looks Too " Soft " & Candy Ass . Bright Eyed & Bushy Tailed Bull Shit . It needs to be " Darker " .
. .. . . . In My Opinion ONLY .. . . .. .
All that buildup, and the animation is TERRIBLE!
All those great designs and art pieces from Mike and then a totally crap cartoon from it? Thank God it never made it past that.
Why would you want to get away from Marvel with Jack Kirby, Walter Simonson, John Romita Jr. and company? I love Mike Mignola, but let him do versions of the comic!
