Soon many, but I like a prise sugar and dill on my salad with mayonnaise. I too add a drop of the gerkin- pickel juice which is also usually sweet. Just adds something really original and of course also has the dill. Dill pickel.

I don't know where my mom got our family potato salad recipe, but if I had to guess it would have been from our landlady when we lived in northern Bavaria. She always served it warm. She would start by making the sweet/sour dressing with sugar, vinegar, a small onion, salt and pepper, in the blender, no mayo was ever used. Then she'd cook the potatoes in the microwave and peel them. She always put hard boiled eggs in her potato salad and topped it with a bit of fresh chopped parsley. It's the only potato salad that I like since I've been eating it for most of my life.

Good tip about the silent boil. I've never seen anything except "boiling" potatoes and that meant a rolling boil. And the little fork was a grand tool. I'm getting one of those. I prefer to cook my potatoes whole but usually peel and cut them before cooking because I hate trying to peel hot potatoes. I have tried holding them in a towel (makes a mess out of a kitchen towel) or I juggle them about playing a painful game of "hot potato"! (not smart while holding a knife 🤦🏻‍♀️) I am definitely getting the fork.

Hi;there is 2 different types of Patato salads, the one in the Rhein areas use mayonnaise and the other Typ uses Öl and vinegar which is more south of Germany, tried them both,in the mayo ones I put some lemon juice and dill into it and also a couple of hard boiled eggs,I am German but I live in Britain since 47 years and still make typical German food and my English friends love it ,I think everyone has a slightly different method,…….

Amazes me how US "kids" descended from Germany are not taught difference between major regions, like near North Sea versus near mountain cultures. They really need curiosity about old tribes cause some of that anti mayo, (I'm gonna die) passion is Swabian in my opinion...saying this as my mother's side is part that S German and part Hannover/ Hamburg from 1700 colonialists in Pennsylvania, North Carolina. #I

There are many different regional recipes for potato salad in Germany. So your German grandmother made hers one way, my grandmother made hers differently, and Anja’s grandmother made hers differently. There’s not just one way to make it.

Please use a fork, not your fingers to extract your gherkins from the jar.
Your fingers will spoil the brine.
