    I love watching your channel and I'm looking forward to making this! I just thought I would mention something you may find useful. Malic acid is what gives apples their tartness and can be purchased in a powdered form from winemaking shops and on Amazon. It's commonly used in candies to give them a tart flavor. I recently added it to flavorless apples that were given to me and I made the most amazing apple sauce and apple butter I've ever made. Instead of adding lemon juice to your filling, I think it would be interesting to add a little malic acid to your Gravenstein apples and see if it gives you something comparable to the streusel apples from Germany.

    I've just discovered your Gabled Home! I am half Czech, my dad & half German, my mom. Mom learned that Czech way of making apple strudel & I make it sometimes now too. Her mom did not make apple strudel, but kraut with ham strudels ~ yum! Our dough if properly prepared stretches out on a six-foot table (covered). Lots of apple slices are put on in a single layer; cinnamon & sugar are sprinkled over. Butter pats are generously strewn all over. After being rolled up it is cut in lengths to fit 4 or more 9x13 pans. During the baking we baste with the pan juices, so it does not come out with the crispy top yours did. But we all think we've died & gone to heaven it is that good. Makes my mouth water just watching your video. I watched several Czech videos they did not baste. Mom learned to make it from Dad's sister so perhaps that is what their mom did, I don't know. He & his family have passed so no one to ask any longer, sadly.... See you 🙂

    This looks delicious and fairly simple to make, I will definitely give it a try. I just wanted to point out that you seem to have the ingredients for the apple filling doubled up in the printed version of the recipe. Is this a misprint? I watched your video and I don't think these ingredients are doubled.

      @@OurGabledHome I was wondering too - confused as there are two separate lines for apples - one is by weight and the other is further down and lists the number of apples. I am excited to make this recipe because I held back before thinking it was much more complicated. I don't want to mess it up though - Anja can you confirm how many apples to use? I cannot get Gravenstein here in Canada but I can get Gramny Smith.

    I made this, it was very nice.
    Some things I noticed:
    I needed almost double the amount of flour(I made the dough without a machine, could that be why?)
    I found the pastry a bit too 'dry', is it meant to be this way?
    Thanks!

    • @OurGabledHome
      @OurGabledHome  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am glad to hear you liked this recipe. Depending on your flour, the humidity in your home and other variables, you might have to add more flour. However, adding too much can also cause it to be too dry ~ Anja

      @stefankempkes3769 ปีที่แล้ว

       @Our Gabled Home Thanks. Is it worth spending extra money to buy high quality flour? I used the cheapest possible flour to cut costs, but would be willing to spend more if it results in a better pastry.
