Amazing movie. He knew he couldnt take revenge on the monster jung was, so he took it on his family Turned into a real monster too Also 10:12 as someone who's been assaulted, your body involuntary freezes when things like this happen. It just freezes.
Kim Jee Woon is one of the most respected directors in Korean Cinema alog with Bong Joon Ho (Parasite), Park Chan Wook (Oldboy). His other movies that i highly recommend are: 1. The Good, The Bad, The Weird - Korean western action comedy starring Lee Byung Hun (I Saw the Devil) and Song Kang Ho (Parasite) 2. A Bittersweet Life - Gangster action drama starring Lee Byung Hun. 3. A Tale of Two Sisters - Horror Mystery 4. Cobweb - Dark comedy starring Song Kang Ho
'A Tale of Two Sisters' is truly a masterpiece. However, not a lot of people react to it and it definitely requires multiple viewings to truly get what's going on.
This movie does take a toll on you, it's scarring in an unforgiving way, both physically & mentally yet it's shot so beautifully (the beginning snow flicker-scattering shots, the dusky dawn backdrop against the final breakdown of Soo-hyun, etc.) and skillfully (achieving the somber, brooding tone with colors, sounds) which makes for a stark contrast / nice juxtaposition within the absolute, devastating brutality it depicts... This brute who operates strictly on id with a complete absence of ego/super-ego gradually bringing out the same in the protagonist blends/blurs the antagonist/protagonist relationship well and on that note, they even did a superb job with the poster (not the 70's vibe poster shown in the content but the one in your thumbnail); the beast of an antagonist embedded into Soo-hyun''s face foretelling the beast within him as well that he comes to recognize as his pursuit of revenge rages on. Relating to what Beaver said at one point that he's looking for something that doesn't exist, there was a slight mishap in the translation in what the sister-in-law said on the phone - she actually told him it's meaningless (not pointless, which translates differently given the context), manifesting in the last scene when it becomes apparent achieving revenge only led him to feeling completely hollow, tormented in the end as he breaks down, having lost everything in the process...Ah, now I'm going to feel unresolved(?) for the next few days as I watched it in full format again, but kudos to you guys for checking it out, you were put through A LOT, I gather-
I see people recommend "The Chaser" , "The Yellow sea" , "The Wailling" all this movie from director "Na Hong-jin" and yeah i recommend too, if you like South Korea thriller movie
Please React to the New World: Lee Jung-jae, the main character of Squid Game, and Choi Min-sik, the main character of Old Boy and Saw the Devil. New World is an indispensable movie in Korean movies.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Please react to "The Wailing" and "The medium", These are not revenge films but bloody mystery thrillers. Also directed by Na Hong-jin of "The Chaser".
Director Lee may have wanted the film's title, 'The Devil', to be interpreted in various ways... but in fact, I think it is a story about a tragic protagonist's failed revenge and a story about a man who fell into the abyss while chasing the devil. A better revenge would have been for the devil to give him the 'boredom' of dying by eating the same menu for the rest of his life in a cell without any stimulation.

This is my first time seeing this channel so I don’t their names, but the guy on the right kind of looks like Eric Bana. Am I only one who sees it?
The fact that the 'good' guy traumatized the killer's family at the end, just for his own gratification, makes him a villain as well. The cry of the killer's mother is too tragic. I understand what story writer intended, but it makes the whole motive pointless.
The movie did not mean for the protagonist to be the 'good' guy, the poster even has the serial killer's face sectioned into the agent's (recognizing the beast within him coming to surface is knowingly portrayed in the movie as well as there being a foreboding line by the current police chief to Joo-yun's father at one point - 'you cannot become a monster yourself to fight a monster') and the movie delves into the grey, more complex, ambiguous moral ground than the 2 dimensional, black & white good vs. evil... And his last act of revenge was the only kind to inflict pain & fear the killer said he didn't know/feel as the last few minutes or so of his life, we see the killer in true fear of his parents & son finding out (the only thread he seemed to have left linked to humanity) his true identity after the execution, having the knowledge of being killed by his own family and the torment that would leave on the family for the rest of their lives (which kind of goes in line with what Soo-hyun said 'I want you to suffer even after you die' in a way, that there will be suffering by the family after he dies and/or he'll know their suffering if there's an afterlife). Also, you see pained tears streaming down Soo-hyun's face during the last hours he spent with the killer as he tortures him and you know it's NOT the 'gratifying' kind of revenge he's getting/seeking from the guy but the self-destructive kind. In the last scene of walking down a bleak empty road, he tries to force out a laugh of a winner, a victor, which he cannot bring himself to because there's nothing but gaping hollowness after getting what he wanted so he just completely breaks down...the point of the movie I think could be to leave the viewers feeling unresolved, the inexplicable sadness in witnessing intention and resolution crossing ways - not one 'meeting' the other per say - with no definite, resulting dead-ends, ironically enough for a movie with a lot of it in the physical sense...

Another crazy Korean film you want? Then I recommend you 'The Yellow sea(2010)'.
It had one of the most impressive car chases I've seen -- right up there with William Friedkin's car chases. They're less prolonged but more brutal.
A son who had nothing to do with anything killed his father.
