- In many episodes of Thomas and Friends, they used a sound effect from "The Train" from 1964. Its a really good war movie if you want to see great shots of real trains.

I miss the episodes of Thomas & Friends when they used the model train sets. They were awesome when accidents happened 🤣
Seasons 1 through 3 used old 1920's recordings used for The French Connection (1971), Chattanooga Choo Choo (1984) and the most famous, Emperor Of The North (1973). The one here used for The Train (1964) was recorded back in the 40s.

The braking sound you refer to was also used in the British 1949 film "Train Of Events" by Ealing Films. And the animated Wind In The Willows
In fact the Seasons 1 and 3 train brakes is originally the TCF effect one available in International Sound Effects Library.

What a coincidence that the show and The Train were released only twenty years apart from each other.
James was puffing smoothly INTIL a spitfire was chasing behind him! James picked up speed and SLAMED his brakes and flew into a tunnel and stopped safely in a tunnel.

Did you know that in the books and by extension the show, the only reason why they get put back together when they crash is because they’re all famous? Rev. Audrey’s books canonically saved the entire cast from being outmoded with the rest of Great Britain’s steam engines, and subsequently dismantled. Gordon actually had an arc where he mourns the loss of his “brothers” on the mainland.
and also the fact Sir Toppamhat loves steam far more then diesel and that’s why he keeps buying so many steams.
It was used in The Great Discovery when Thomas applies his brakes.

I find it weird that in later seasons whenever an engine applies its brakes, the narrator then says "the engine applies its brakes" instead of "the driver applies the brakes" like in older seasons, which makes it sound like the engines can apply their brakes on their own without a driver.
