You'll notice that most of the stories in which these crashes took place were originally written by Wilbert Awdry himself. Being a railway enthusiast, he had most of the events in his stories based on real events that happened on real railways.
The Percy Runs away one was Also Based on when a Great Western Auto Tank was hit by an express, and sent flying backward down the Line, the Auto Tank in Question , No.1466, Is Still with us today, preserved at the Didcot railway Centre
3:15 - This was really inspired by an incident in which GWR 4800/1400 class engine No. 4866 (akin to Oliver, later re-numbered 1466) was in the station throat at Newton Abbot, Devon in 1939. The signal man was unaware of the engine's position and an express train was fast approaching, and narrowly avoided an accident with No. 4866. With this in mind, the driver tried to move the engine, and he and the fireman jumped clear just in time. As a result, No. 4866 ran driver-less for seven miles before it was deliberately de-railed.
I knew even as a kid watching the old episodes narrated by Ringo Starr that miniature accidents in the TTTE world were actually based on real life train accidents. That one where Gordon angrily steamed off the turntable and down into a river ditch reminds me of a tale my Father always told me that happened in Peterbourgh South Australia where a loco slipped off the turntable up there and actually plowed through the Beer Garden of the Pub opposite. Workers always joked the train wanted a beer before starting work but the actual incident was anything but funny - it was frightening.
I have no words to sum up the simple appeal other than watch UnluckyTugs tatmr review the Do you believe in magic section where he explains why Thomas has been around for as long as it has and stood the test of time!
2:42 - I was born and bred in Hull, Yorkshire and am quite interested in railways, I had no idea about this incident, let alone it being the basis for Duck’s crash in a Close Shave.
Another inspiration for down the mine, an engine much more like Thomas, fell into a deep sinkhole, the driver tried to save it and didn't jump out, both were buried to this day.
You forgot some real life crashes. Donald's signalbox accident was based on an incident that happened in London. The diesel in "Old Stuck-up" who crashed into the back wall of the sheds was based on an accident that happened with an A4 Pacific named Sir Nigel Greslesy. Godred's death was based on a tragic incident that happend in the Snowdon mountain railway with it's No.1 named Ladas.

Oliver’s basis. Strange that it was based on (sorta) a green engine getting sent back
Yay it’s still alive! Good to know! :)
I find this story unironically funny
I love how many accidents were based on real events
It's interesting how several of these real-world railroad incidents were considered basis of Thomas & Friends accident scenes. Fabulous work!

Amazing video and how many accidents happen in real life
I didnt know the accident in "A Close Shave" was based on a real accident in my hometown! Thanks for that!
GTW 4070 also suffered a turntable accident in 1955 in Durand Michigan, This led to her having a new tender replacing the USRA one she originally had
Cool video
Awesome video😍♥️🥳🎉
I love how ridiculous poses these trains ended up makes me WANT to see what the actual fuck happened in order for them to land in that shape.

I actually read about those in The Thomas The Tank Engine Man by Brian Sibley. I read that book earlier this year. It was a good book.
A Better View For Gordon was my favorite because it reminds me of the 2011 film, “Hugo”.
Because it’s a recreation of the incident

The engine at 1:40-2:00... Did ANYONE bother to try digging that engine out?
Maybe with today's technology, you'd think they have a chance.
The engine is probably under several hundred tons of soil and has likely collapsed on itself, if not fully broken down by the underground elements.
