The shooting technique John uses, 9:20 the “two in the chest, one in the head,” is called a “Mozambique drill.” Which is a super classic CQB shooter drill.
Not only is this deep diving absolutely incredible, it is also giving other NR members a chance to shine on the main. Voss is an excellent media personality and leader
The only negative in this breakdown is that it was only 20 minutes long. I wanted more. This was awesome and made one of my favorite movies even better. Thanks!
I love this so much! One of my favorite parts of John Wick is the Underground and all the rules and how it’s just literally its own world that sits in reality but is handled so much differently. Enjoying this content so much!
The way they colored the scenes to me was like an analogy with John's life from the bright, light yellow when he was with his wife as along with the rage/grievance with her death as well as his path back to "darkness" (all dark gray, and barely lit places and corners of the underground he used to live by.
Eric, you are really good at these breakdowns and so happy to have this channel just to do a dive into more than comic book movies. Please do the other John Wick movies
Damn this was such a good breakdown. I loved it and can't wait for more deep dives of John wick movies. Your breakdown gave the movie even more shine than before❤❤
On the joke about the gas station attendant not telling Ioseph not to smoke: back when full service was more common and everybody chain-smoked, half the time the guy pumping the gas would be smoking.
Keanu being so dedicated to actually learning all these skills not only makes him an amazing actor, but you can tell how smooth it makes his role as John Wick. Almost like slipping on a custom-made suit that you have been eyeballing for so long.
OH 6:24 I didn't catched that the keymaker was the doc! Good one! Besides Pantoliano and Laurence Fishburne from "The Matrix" gang. 10:52 "Warriors ... come out to plaaaay!"
One of my favorite movies; this breakdown was bittersweet to watch as I was a few hours late getting to it. RIP to my favorite character of the entire franchise. Brilliant deep dive as ever, Voss, you are truly in your element here ❤
I love how the writers of John Wick draw heavily on other mythologies (Greek, Christian, Dante's Inferno etc.) to create its own. This video highlighted certain aspects of the story i didnt catch on to; the significance of the rules governing the assasins world and that Johns journey in this 1st part was not purely of revenge / justice but of honor as well. Would love to see your thoughts on the whole franchise as of date
Winston specifically says "Rules… without them we live with the animals". Pretty sure it gets said a few times throughout the movies or at least the first one. Very excited for Chapter 4 next week!
Love this! Very interesting the part about Greek mythology. I wonder if you could explain the whole story from a mythological point of view. If you can, Erik, I'd love a video about that sometime! 😊
The John wick films are so much fun and very refreshing. Super Interesting breakdown! Loving the content on the deep dive! Great work on this endeavour one month in Erik! (RIP Lance Reddick. Such sad news)
I watched a John Wick movie with my dad during a snow day at the beginning of the year. They are so well made. Keanu is fantastic. I had a boss who said she couldn’t see him in anything but Bill and Ted and it made me sad.
What a brilliant breakdown on one of my all time favorite movies! Thank you so much for your work on this channel Erik + team it has truly been incredible!
This movie is way more detailed & layered than I thought it is. Also, thanks for clearing the detail regarding His wrist watch. I did notice him wearing it in that fashion in the second movie & thought of the reason behind it & it's only now I know of it. Thanks for the information. I owe it to you.
With the whole "John is the one you send to kill the Boogeyman" line, and the adherence to the rules. The Boogeyman is someone who doesn't play by the rules.
The gun play in these movies is as close to perfect as I think we’ve gotten in a movie. If y’all haven’t watched Keanu training with Taran Tactical, definitely go watch some of that. And then maybe go out to the range and run some drills yourself. Stay loaded, my friends.
It’s really interesting to compare your analysis with Mikey Neumann’s analysis. You should check out the Movies with Mikey episodes on all three John Wick films!
I absolutely adore Erick he’s my main go to to anything breakdown Easter egg related because he’s such a film nerd at heart! I beg please do a deep dive into Who Framed Roger Rabbit!
I love the idea you proposed that john wick’s and the directors adherence to the filmmaking “rules” from classic action films is a similar revenge/return to the cinema the characters return to the game of assassins
Vossman that was amazing!! I’m gonna rewatch this tonight after this amazing breakdown and I feel like I will appreciate the movie even more than I already. You are the man! ❤
Thank you Deep Dive and Eric for such a great look behind the world building of the John Wick. I am intrigued at how Keanu has made himself the hero/anti-hero/rule player in the environments he lives (inside the game or outside the game). Great understanding of the foundational myths in the movie story-telling and his believability within it. Thank you!
Vigo saying that they are cursed is really just an excuse isn't it? It was literally his son that caused this entire event. It's not like outside forces sort of influenced the kid and John wick to be enemies, the kid just straight up decided to kill his dog. I love the point though that John is just taking back the Empire that he gave Vigo. That is actually kind of profound, since most people think John is just going nuts over a dog and a car, which suck, but aren't worth human life.
I really enjoyed this. I love movies, but I am not familiar with a lot of the technical aspects or why certain things are done. I like how you break down the different scenes, colors, and other things that after I hear them I feel that I should have noticed them but then I realize it I had no idea what I was looking at. You do a really good job at this, Eric. I look forward to more.
Just wow. Amazing video. I already loved John Wick, but you just made me appreciate it 10x more coz of these small details any average movie goer would've missed.
Ok the watch fact blew me away. Deep Dive4L!...RIP Lance Reddick. Every since that moment he got emotional on a Fringe panel, I've been endeared towards him. A true legend. 🙏🏾
For any manga fans here, I heavily recommend Sakamoto Days. It’s a happier John Wick that ended up owning a 7-11 basically, the action choreograph is top notch for shonen and like John, Taro Sakamoto uses absolutely everything he can grab as a weapon
*"You know, people kept asking me if I was back. And you know, I haven't really thought about it. But, you know what? Yeah, I'm thinking I'm back!"* This is, hands down, one of the single best damn modern action movies ever. Straight up. I LOVE this movie and its world-building so much. I can't wait for Chapter 4 next weekend. Also, rest in peace to Lance Reddick (aka Charon).
The one thing I appreciate most about this series is the firearm discipline. Even if you haven’t used every bullet in the magazine, you get rid of it and load a full one. Better to have more ammo than to run out.
Loved loved loved this breakdown. Every time I watch a breakdown like this it makes me want to go back and watch the movie again. I didn't LOVE JW1 but after this I will definitely appreciate it more. Thanks Erik, great work!
What hooked me into John Wick immediately after the first movie, was their ability to create a UNIVERSE. Many movies try and fail (the reason Marvel is so successful is their history of worldbuilding), but John Wick nails the idea of giving you a little but not a lot, forcing me to come back for more! What is the hotel? Who runs this world? Who is the final boss? The questions are never ending... Hence why they are on their fourth film already.
I love it! Some of the cuts you found were completely lost on me even after seeing it a few times! Hope you do 2 & 3 before 4 comes out so I can be prepped!
Hoooly shit this analysis blew my mind at multiple points! I've watched this movie multiple times, and yet there was still a lot I missed! PLEASE do the other John Wick movies, they are super deserving of this time of analysis! This is the rare fanchise where the sequels get better and better and better 🤩
Wow. I love this deep dive. You showed things that I never noticed or thought of and I have seen this movie many, many times. Please do deep dives on the other John Wick movies too.
Not only this was my favourite 2014 movie, but actively make an effort to rewatch it once a year in order. And chapter 4 was just perfect to show how not even cancer can kill John Wick.
Great deep dive, I absolutely love the John Wick movies. They’re mythical with an interesting world and obviously top notch action. Not to mention how awesome Keanu Reeves is. Chapter 4 was phenomenal.
Rest in peace, Lance Reddick. Such an amazing actor who has been ingrained into our hearts and minds through all his great and memorable roles
Anddd this is how I found out he passed :/
The shooting technique John uses, 9:20 the “two in the chest, one in the head,” is called a “Mozambique drill.” Which is a super classic CQB shooter drill.

11:01 - Another movie he was good in was “Dreamscape” (1984). Love that flick! He did an excellent job earlier in “48 Hours” (1982) as well.

I love the cop in John Wick, he saw the bodies and was like nope
More John Wick Breakdowns please 😭😭😭😭
Me & my floofy goof love watching us some John Wicks… like my pup snags a bully stick & parks his butt on the couch ready to go
Great breakdown of the rules. Darla's cameo is a treat, such a sweetie!

Love this. I'm a massive fan of the John wick films and would love to see more breakdowns on the John wick films
Love this channel. Ive re watched Wanda Vision, Loki, and Back to the Future after these breakdowns. Now im going to watch the John Wick movies again.

I just saw this movie for the first time tonight and the choreography and attention to detail blew me away! Now to binge 2 and 3 before 4 releases
What a brilliant breakdown on one of my all time favorite movies! Thank you so much for your work on this channel Erik + team it has truly been incredible!
I never understood when the hotel guys kill Perkins. Standing in four corners around her and shoot her. Crossfire. The crossfire.
Crazy about Lance when this video dropped. Thank you Eric & thank you Lance!
Just so happy to have a channel dedicated to Easter eggs and details to other movies besides comic movies.
