  • Examination of the ignition plate assembly and basic functions of the 9.9 and 15 hp Evinrude motors. This is a 1984 model my son dragged home for me to fix. It needed alot of attention and the videos I watched all pretty much sucked at explaining things so I thought I would take a hack at it. Hopefully it will save somebody a bunch of money and/or time. This was only worth working on because it still had decent compression. Please comment if you find it useful information. If you found my content useful, please consider a donation at

    Thank you very much for a well explained demo of the few extra components on this particular motor. I don't have a 9.9 but have been thinking of getting one and your video certainly comes helpful.

    Best explanation on parts under flywheel and throttle relationship I have seen. I have seen testing videos on coils outside of driver coil but NOT the testing and relationship between the driver coil to test in relationship to testing the 2 cylinder exterior coils i.e. in a 76 johnson 9.9. If you can enlighten would love to see that video. Thanks for the very good video explaining the interrelationship & functioning of these parts.

    Great video. I have 86 6hp and the plate looks the same. I’m having no spark issues. The trigger on mine looks all burnt and nasty and so is the inside of the flywheel. Can these triggers be serviced and cleaned with sandpaper or replaced? Mine also has that same shoe y black goo under it like yours does. Thanks

    Hello. I really need some assistance and recommendations. I have a 15hp 4 stroke long shaft fixed to my 14ft open fishing boat. So.. the engine starts after 2...3 pulls. Oh its made in 2001. After a 20min ride i anchor and fish. Want chage spots it wont start. Leaving it for 30mins it does but dies luckly near mooring. All fuel lines and carb are clean. It was suggested by the evenrude dealer i need a new coil. Any ideas most welcome. Oh taking the plugs out and pulling i get sparks ?

    I have a problem. I just bought a 9.9 1978 and change the carburetor to a 15hp. I am not sure if this problem started then, because I barely run it .
    So here it goes:
    In order to turn it on when in neutral I have to accelerate all the way possible. It will turn on but be be barely a little over idle rpm. I can't really rev it up at all. I assume is maybe between 800 to 1000 rpms. So I just go down a little bit to make it idle smooth, which it does. When I put it in reverse, due to the restriction, it will only troll but I cannot accelerate anymore in reverse. And when going forward, I can accelerate, but I am certain that it doesn't reach more than 4000rpms or even less.
    To me, it feels like the acceleration starts too late(spark timing), so that creates all of these symptoms.
    Can someone direct me as to how fix/adjust that in these motors? Thanks in advance

    Great video and explanation.I own on of these and acouple of 25hp that I work on myself and since you are well versed on the timing maybe you have insight on a 25hp Johnson I have.Got this 25 well used motor and it has electric start and the stopper for the timing screw is mounted on the starter bracket.Someone notched out the bracket to get more adjustment from the screw and I cannot figure out why they would do this.Any thoughts?

      I am so sorry but I have no experience with that. Maybe post the question on a forum for boat motors. Try this one www.johnsonoutboardforum.com/

    Great information..
    Jist today did i take my flywheel and found the same 2 electric parts conected under it..are these two enough for me to get electricity to recharge a battery ?

    • @digitaloverdrivesystems
      @digitaloverdrivesystems  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think so. It would need to be an electric start version, which has an additional stator winding coil to recharge the batt...

    60RPM would come out to 120 pulses. 2 pulses per rev.
    Yes, indeed advancing timing increases power, the real reason timing is advanced at higher speeds is 1 it runs better and 2 gasoline naturally burns slow. Advancing the timing at higher speeds allows complete combustion thus more power.

      Go to www.boats.net/catalog/evinrude/outboard/9-9hp and enter your model number. You should be able to find it in one of the diagrams... Cheers!

    I have a 92 Johnson 15 no spark and just found the ignition plate wiring is bad, looks like it was rubbing on the plate when it turns. Any advice?? Should I splice in new pieces of wire? Or just bite the bullet and buy a new plate for 300$?

    • @digitaloverdrivesystems
      @digitaloverdrivesystems  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh my gosh, don't spend that money on a new/used plate. I definitely would (and have) splice new wires. I don't like those blue butt splices because the are so big. If you are able, I would solder the wires and use heat shrink tubing. I have a video about led lights that shows how it is done if you want to look there. Save your 300 bucks for something you and the family can enjoy. Or beer maybe, lol...

    Can this system charge a battery if i add a rectifier?

    • @digitaloverdrivesystems
      @digitaloverdrivesystems  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, there is already a rectifier in the system. That is how the battery gets recharged when the engine is running.

    • @franciscoaguirre6402

      I've looked all over youtube for a video on setting it up for this engine. Could you make a video on how to set it up to charge the battery? I would really appreciate it and I'm sure you'll get views for sure

    • @digitaloverdrivesystems
      @digitaloverdrivesystems  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@franciscoaguirre6402 I am so sorry... I thought you were talking about my video on the husqvarna mower.. Unfortunately the 9.9 Evinrude I show in this vid has no provision for generating continuous power to charge a battery. There may be however, ignition plates that have "stator winding" that would suite your purpose. If you can find a plate that is from a motor that had "electric start", you would have what you need. Sorry I cannot tell you any more. I am no expert, but that is what I would research... Cheers sir!
