Put some dielectric grease when pushing boot on, makes it a little easier. Good repair!! I’m currently rebuilding basically a 1971 6 hp Evinrude. Rebuilt carb, fuel pump, impeller and housing, sealed gear box, thermostat etc.. Had to remove powerhead, and engine head to clean out cooling passages. Now that I have it all down going to restore with paint decals etc..
OMC manuals say to use rubbing alcool to facilitate pushing that wire in the boot. Reason being that alcool will evaporate while grease stays in there and could help separation next time you pull the plug. Regards !
Hey, that other spark plug boot was probably a screw on type (not the bent metal that pierces the inside of the wire). Look down the boot hole and, if it looks like a small wood screw, clip off a 1/2" of the old plug wire exposing fresh copper, and screw the boot onto the the plug wire. Very common with motorcycles, waverunners, etc. Also, some are "crimp on" type, and sometimes they don't pierce the wire either.
Those older OMC Johnson and Evinrude 9.9/15 are some great, reliable motors. If haven’t already, I’d look into swapping in an OMC 15hp carburetor onto that 9.9 intake. That’s all there is to it, extra 5hp.
The 9.9 hp is definitely the smoother trolling motor and apart of the tuned exhaust, later 15 hp engines came with leaf (aka reed) intake valves mounted on little shims to help them breathe better.
We need to hang out some do some fishing hunting . I got an evinrude I need worked on. Grew up fishing Shelby forest lakeview tunica, Sardis and my daddy is from Camden so that’s my second home, I raised my kids there so got some knowledge of the Kentucky lake there and Tva land to hunt,
Haha I will be staying on Kentucky Lake for the LBL quota hunt later this year. I have never been there but will get to see it this fall. I miss Lakeview. That place was awesome. I have been thinking of taking my kayak down there and access from the levee. I hate they closed the ramp.
Thanks for the video! I had the exact same problem/same outboard. I also replaced both coils and it ran great, but about a month later I was back on one cylinder. I know you said your not a mechanic, but any ideas?
@@billharrison8328 Me either. I just dive in and hope for the best. If I mess up, a mechanic can fix it. Last time I used a mechanic, I lost 3 months of prime fishing time and $1,000. I will avoid them at all cost from now on. Their rates are insane.

Nice. Saves a ton of $$ to do it yourself. Last time I sent it to a guy, it cost $1,000 and I was without a motor for 3 months.
This was a garage sale motor, a project to keep me busy, now I’m looking for a 12 foot boat and trailer
@@gillgetter3004 I hear that. I bought this one off a guy at work for $250

Very informative video, but just to set the record straight, those OMC low profile 9.9 and 15 hp were first introduced in 1974. Regards !

Oh, I watched to the end ... yeah, screw on just like putting the plug wire onto the coil. I guess you already knew some caps are screw on.
yes the screw on boots were great.. the pokey spring design is bullshitt and causes alot of problems.,.

The exhaust is a little different too - but you do get almost the extra 5 hp.

TY for doing this video. Great info
What plugs did you use you use ?

Stick with either OEM, Sierra or CDI (in a pinch GLM) parts as those cheap Amazon Chinese parts will let you stranded for sure !
My 15 is down. No fire. But my coils are under the flywheel
Sounds like your task is going to be a bit more difficult. You tried the plugs first, just in case?
@@midsouthoutdoors7321 yessir. I started the dissembly process but stopped lol. Have no idea what I’m doing

@@billharrison8328 Good Luck with your motor. I hope you get it sorted out.
What brand coils are those I can’t seem to find them
