When I first started singing opera, my teacher thought I was a dramatic soprano and that the best way to train my voice would be to sing mezzo soprano repertoire. This was the path she had taken herself to becoming a dramatic. My second singing teacher thought the reason my high notes were so challenging was because I was singing too heavy. She thought I was a light soprano and possibly a soubrette like her. My third singing teacher was a full lyric and thought I should sing like her. My fourth teacher was a man... LOL At this point, I think we spend far too much time pigeonholing ourselves into narrow "fach" guidelines. So expect to see all kinds of singing from me on this channel! Today's aria is typically sung by a soubrette, light lyric or mezzo soprano.
@Brielle_Zoe If you love acting, the soubrette rep can be so much fun. I found developing my voice with soubrette roles boosted my confidence and helped me to grow into my fuller voice over time.
This was really fun--and funny. I enjoyed a lot and will continue to enjoy as I listen more. It's so fun now that you've got so many songs out there. I have so many choices to re-listen to.
Yay for another classical piece! And yay for speaking out for artists claiming roles and styles that don't "fit" them - it's always the most exciting thing about art. Here's a fun story. Listening to your video inspired me to go listen to more Cosi, and when I searched youtube for the opera, your video came up second or third on the hit list. I thought that was very cool - it made me feel like now I'm friends with someone famous :)
Vivoutloud * Wow! Isn’t that SO fun! And it’s not coincidence. I’m taking TH-cam very seriously. It’s the second largest search engine in the world after Google. So I’ve been learning all about SEO and how it can help boost my videos in search. So glad to hear it’s working!
I think Despina is the funnest character in Cosi as the opera seems to pivot around her. In Uomini sets the theme that will drive the operas theme even before Alphonso bribes her. "What, you expect soldiers to be faithful?" She has to be played in a consistently fun-loving way to keep the opera safe. Without her joie de vivre the opera would be a very dark commentary. I enjoyed the lighthearted way you have sung her.
The fach system can be a great tool for helping a singer find their operatic 'identity' but you're right, singers sometimes use it to limit themselves instead. Joan Sutherland sang huge, heavy roles like Turandot and light, agile ones like Olympia, and nobody said boo. "Fach" anyone who tries to tell you what you are and aren't allowed to sing ;)
Thank you! Yes, Joan Sutherland had great agility along with her full bodied sound. Her Olympia would sound very different than Natalie Dessay's and they should BOTH definitely sing it! Cecilia Bartoli is another great example. She's performed all three female roles in Cosi. I know the Fach system has it's uses, it's just overused!

S Murray Thank you. Yes, Despina offers a great deal of light and laughter to what could be a very dark story of romantic deception.

You are singing between notes, good actress but need more vocal technique
