Ok so here’s my problem: My voice is strong when I sing low, HOWEVER I can’t sing TOO low. I can sing pretty high but my voice gets quieter and more breathy. I want to be able to sing louder when singing higher without strain (sorry if that didn’t make too much sense! Anyways nice video!)
You need to find an optimal placement and sing higher while keeping in. For ex. I'm singing a low note and than making a glissando and reaching an octave higher, and higher again and than go back, while leaving the mouth shape and the feeling inside as close as possibile. Sorry, cannot explain it better in english 😅
I love the Italian arias and composers. I spent a decade learning a bunch of songs and arias that I would sing for about another 10 years. Then I heard and learned 2 French arias that I really liked. I was amazed how the language seem to fit my voice and technique. Don't really know why, but the placement seems to fit my voice better. I am not professionally trained, although I have been paid to sing over the last 20 years as a hobby. Opera for ever!

Thank you so much! You are very positive and inspiring. I'm a young 60 year old and love to sing my heart out. I'm looking forward to checking out all the recommendations above. I'd be interested in your free class, if you are still doing them.. Thanks again.
Lol Same!!! Idk why, though... my parents already know I love Classical music and Opera There's just something Weird in admitting to them that I want to learn to sing it? I know exactly how you feel
My problem is I can’t sing clearly. Like it always comes out crackly no matter if I sing high or low. It sounds like I have a dry throat even though I don’t. Any tips?
Even as a mezzo I have more ease and comfort at the top of my range(I know it's odd). So arias like o mio babbino caro, porgi amour are in the comfortable placement of my voice. My problem and struggle has always been the bottom, finding that resonance within my lower notes. Mid and top are fine, it's the lower notes. The fifth octave is where I have the most resonance/comfort/ease.
Oh my.. for a first moment I thought this would be totally stupid video, but there is actually some nice advice! Thanks. Although I would appreciate some more specific repertoir for baritones :D
8:37 All I can hear is Racetrack from Newsies saying "The woild is ya eryster"... Btw I'm the only opera singer in my school and in advanced choir so yay...... I'll go now
Great video! I like my voice as low as possible, but I feel like I am something special when I sing something like "when I am laid in Earth" or Ave Maria. I am not good, for sure. But I feel like I live my life fully.
Ive actually always wanted to sing Opera. When I was a child my mother would play the great tenors on either record or cd. I always loved hearing it. I actually was born with a very powerful voice and i have very large lungs i found out after nearly succumbing to heat exhaustion one summer. haha. I'm not quite sure of my range or what i'd be called as i can sing as low as Richard Sterban(bass for Oakridge Boys) and can actually get as high as Josh Groban. Which, he obviously isnt the highest ranged vocalist, but I can usually get as high as anyone you'd hear on the air waves. I just dont know where my best range would be. I would love to have coaching to learn. i believe that everyone on this earth has a special talent inside them, that you just have to find it within you. i believe that this could be mine. It's just sad that it's taken me many years to finally discover that this is what i want to do. My mother as a child always told me that i should pursue operatic singing, as i had such a powerful voice for it. My dream would be to hone the skill well enough to have the confidence to one day perform in front of an audience which included my family, and mother in particular. Blessings to all who read this. Don't wait to pursue your dreams. Do it while you can!
I learned classical singing from a female opera singer and she always wanted me to sing bass arias, but it was difficult for me. Later I tried bariton arias and they were much easier for me to sing! So it's very important to find what's the best for your voice and how you can use your talents in the best way! It's really fun to learn and sing with a good teacher and one day maybe you will sing so well, that you wouldn't even imagine right now!
True! My first voice teacher always made me sing alto & I always had a lot of problems. My 2nd teacher made me sing soprano pieces & all of a sudden it was so easy.
Thank you for this video. It was very interesting. I am Mezzo Soprano but after 2 years I can sing a fair bit higher now. I am probably wrong to describe myself now as "lower end of soprano" (I can sing up to C6). My main genre is Musical Theatre but I also sing light opera and included there is O Mio Babbino, Non ho l'eta, Ave Maria to name a few. My head voice is the strongest and I have to "work" to tone down my volume, so I was very interested to hear what you had to say here, and I must say it makes sense to me and I know exactly what you are saying. I am now a (new) subscriber and look forward to discovering your other videos. Thank you once again.
I'm a chorale singer and a tenor. I've tried "Ave Maria" by Caccini as a doxology in an event. It's not much but I was able to pull it through at least. It's hellish on my part because I remember suffering from cough and asthma that time and the piece requires long sustains. Hahaha
I'd really like to find what fits my (female) voice type. I'm by no means well informed, but this is what I think I know: My tessitura may be around the 4th octave. But how do I really know? Is this only determined by where I can sing loudest? My range (not well trained though) is e3-a5. I conclude that I may be a Mezzo? I know there are such things as "vocal fachs" - is this important? Thanks for everything, you helped me understand my voice better :)

does anybody have suggestions for "easy" mezzosoprano or soprano songs that dont go beyond G5 (I cant reach A5 good yet) that are dramatic or sad? I dont really the fast/happy songs that were mentioned in this video so I also find it hard to act the part because i dont like the song. I am also not so good in the long jumping runs yet. I really like slow/dramatic/sad songs and I find songs like Ave Maria by Schubert, Ombra mai fu, e lucevan stelle easy and fun to song. There are a lot of songs that fit my voice but the ones I know and like are mostly for choirs or duets like lakme flower duet which I love. I would appreciate any suggestion for other songs that I dont know yet that fit me/my voice that are also appropiate for women for auditions. Thanks

I can sing songs like white Christmas in a good deep voice and higher notes I can sing but I can tell I strain little, and I am pretty good at songs in between. sounds like you need to train your air support or you just cant sing that high because of the way your vocal cords are
I would say have proper breath support and do exercises to strengthen and lengthen the top voice. It takes effort to sing high loudly
This is my same situation. Chest voice and head voice sound like two different people :/

#2 misconception: "all opera singers are big and fat"
I just saw Nicole Scherzinger nail the part of Christine in the phantom of the Opera title song.
Lekha Chunduri The phantom of the opera is not an opera, it's musical theatre. Also, opera singers can't be too big else they won't fit into the costumes! :)
Nicole Scherzinger is not an opera singer. Phantom of the Opera is NOT an opera!!!!!
Increased pressure on singers to be a size zero has lead to a serious decline in performance quality across the board.

Thank you maam
Do you think that training alone is enough to learn to sing, or does it take an innate talent?
Hello i am from India and i loves to listen opera songs i want your help
Thank you!!
Can I start singing opera if I am already over 40 years old?
Yes, of course!
Yes. No one is too late to sing opera
Just sing or for a career on stage?
Yes, but your voice already passed the “gold period”
You can definitely start lessons, but please don't follow this advice. As an opera singer and teacher, I think this advice is really misleading. Try to find a teacher with at least a graduate degree in classical voice, ideally vocal pedagogy, which is the study and teaching of the voice.
