I'm starting high school this year and I'm really nervous. Last year my school got 2 bomb threats TWICE in a row (which was my first experience with school threats) so i was reasonably quite scared. I called my mom and taled to her which probably helped me stay calm. I'm also possibly on the autism spectrum and I have anxiety as well so I can panic easily, which I listen to music for sometimes. AND a lot of the kids at my school are mean and I'm worried someone will hurt me. I could go on with the dumb rules probably but the school system keeps getting worse and more controlling. :(

I wouldn't say I'm disabled, but I have autism with low support needs. I can go nonverbal if I get too overstimulated. I also have anxiety, so it can happen a lot quicker.
I play music in my headphones so i can drown out any unnecessary noise, and it helps me focus.
If im in class without some sort of distraction, i will either go nonverbal or have a panic attack. It has happened multiple times and yet my teachers still refuse to give me a 504. (I also have a big difficulty with focusing and following along.)
My teachers said "It wasn't severe enough to have a 504", but I literally get NAUSEOUS and PUKE when my anxiety gets too overwhelming.
One time i got in trouble because my teacher asked me a question and i used my notes app to communicate-
I've also got in trouble for stimming, texting my mom, drawing vent art, and GIVING MY FRIEND A HUG.
I go to a private school for neurodivergent kids btw.

i’m pissed about this. last year was my FIRST year of middle school. i was so excited. it was my first school year with a phone, and i felt so independent. that’s the *point* of middle school. you’re supposed to feel independent, and having your own phone is a big part of it. i’ve had an ipad for years, but having a phone is so different, because i can bring it to school. my friend’s mom is scared to tell her because she’s worried she’ll refuse to go to school. my mom even expressed her feelings about not being able to reach me directly without going through the office. im just upset. if school districts are upset about people using phones during class, they shouldn’t ban them. there has to be another way to deal with it. it just shows they don’t care as deeply as they should about this kind of stuff.
edit: couple extra stuff. my best friend lives on the other side of the state. whenever i feel sad, i text her. i LOVE my friends i have right now at school, but i don’t want to vent to them. plus, sometimes, when im sad, texting/writing is just easier. also, if i need to contact my parents or anything like that, i will refuse to talk to the teacher about it. i will refuse to even tell them that i need to step outside for a minute. i wish i could talk to them, but brains are dumb i guess. having a phone for school would allow me to contact my parents, even if its just to say i forgot my binder, and i would much rather that than talk to my teachers.

I just graduated from my old school about 3 months ago, and if you carried a phone into the building, the office required you to put it in a box and they would keep the phones in the office. AND, you had to power off your phone. If they found a phone that wasn’t powered off, they would not let the student have it back at the end of the day. Once a kid got caught with a phone, and the building had to stop everything they were doing and search half the school. The had people take off sweatshirts and empty pockets and bags. I had gotten caught with my phone in my bag. The office took my phone away and told me I couldn’t take it home unless a parent came to the school to pick it up. When they told me that I was speechless. I honestly don’t think that should be legal. The phone is my property. They have no right to not let me have it. Completely insane to me, honestly! My mom wasn’t mad at all for me getting my phone taken, I would keep it in my bag for cases where I had an EMERGENCY and needed to call someone. I never once even took it out of my bag during classes. I understand that schools don’t want kids using phones in class, but like you said, if a teacher spots a kid using their phone when they shouldn’t be, just take it from them! I like the example you gave of yourself here, what if you can’t speak and you need to text someone you know? What if a kid has an asthma attack? Or a crippling anxiety attack? What about cramps that are so bad they might pass out? Schools need to stop focusing only on behavior and more on the student’s actual well-being and mental state.
TLDR - My old school prohibited holding onto a phone at all during school hours and there’s a lot of things wrong with it.

There's evidence that suggests that banning phones on campus improves test scores, improves social interactions, and lessens stress. However, this only works if there is a system in place for emergencies or support for students that have medical issues. If the school cannot accommodate so many students in the event of an emergency, then they need to allow exceptions or better their system.
Unfortunately, because of these potential better test scores, more schools are going to push for this change.

I understand why schools are trying to ban phones; in some of the districts where policies have been implemented it works to improve student behavior and get people to actually talk to each other. As someone who works in juvenile justice I’ve seen enough cases of a student fighting a teacher for confiscating their phone or even fights scheduled through social media at school [+ being filmed]
I understand safety concerns, but since before every child had a personal phone there have been reliable ways for a school to contact a kid’s parents. We should be focused on getting our kids to stay in school and learn, as education/lack thereof correlates strongly to incarceration rates and phones and social media at school is only another pitfall and distraction preventing teachers from effectively managing classrooms and actually getting anyone to learn anything.

Its kinda scary knowing your a kid with problems and you cant contact your parents/guardians. If we do ask if we can use our phones they'll probably say No or "Use it just be quick" or ask for our parents/guardians phone numbers. im happy that some teachers in my school are chill so they actually let us use our phones for a bit and then put them back in the box.

Most any teacher did regarding cell phones back when I was in high school was have a progressional policy where we started the semester slowed to have our phones. If the majority of the class was distracted by their phones, he would have us put our phones in a cubby for the lesson. Then, after a little while, he would let us have our phones again. If you really needed it, you were still allowed to access it while it was in the cubby. That one seemed fair enough and seems like a reasonable workaround to the distracted class problem

My middle school made us put them in our lockers. But this led to me (a person who at the time didn't have a phone) being harassed by the staff often enough that my mom and dad had to call the school to tell them ive never had a phone even during middle school.
Now in my high school it different from teacher to teacher but mostly either you put your phone up in this pocket thingy or you can have it in your bag and are told then its okay to use it, if not its getting sent to the office. This is when i finally got a phone and im glad i did bc most kids act like hooligans about this, but the only reason for a phone was to text my parents personally.
But one time my teachers were telling this kid who clearly had his phone to put it back up in the phone pocket thingy and he kept saying he didn't have it, so i just told my tech that he did have it (he was being called out for it just admit it!) And then he proceeded to tell me he will get someone to beat me up. Next thing i know im hearing him and two other guys got in trouble for bribery since they were trying to convince a junior to beat me up 😐
Like i think banning phones in full is a dumb idea, some parents just need to tell their kid and punish them more so they stop doing stupid things on their phone while at school (but thats a dumb assumptionthey would do it at all). Banning phones means: what if there is a Toronto outside and the kids want to text or call their parents? They cant and the student knows they cant say goodbye if anything were to happen.
Its even WORSE now that most things in school require a PHONE or thats most middle and high schools in my area. Like i need my phone for my school ID to get food, a book, to log into something, get into the school if i left for an appointment, to sign myself out. All of that isnt paper anymore and i doubt my school would want to waste more paper to do it.
And yeah the whole thing with medical issue too, last year i kept having really bad stomach problems it felt like (and still does) i have a ball in my stomach and so i had to call home to many times for hte amount of pain i was in and also i kept getting small colds all through out last year as well. If we the students cant get to our parents to tell them what is wrong in a nice and timely manner then there is SOMETHING wrong.
Thanks for reading my long commet lol! :)

I go to a school where phones are banned. I’m from the UK but a school near me lets them have their phones in break/lunch. But the school I go to doesn’t let you have your phone at all, even if they see it in your pocket they will confiscate it. Due to this, I am used to this phone rule. A lot of students use their phones in the toilets during lessons because of this.

You get it taken, and you have to PAY to get it back. $15, plus your PARENT has to do it. (Same rule for wireless earbuds. Even if youre using on your computer, both your earbyds AND phone get taken. $15 for each.)

For my school we only can have them in the cafeteria and passing time now, people with issues in my school have to have some kind of note that they're the only students allowed to have their phone in class. For me I see why they are doing this, but at the same time they're being lazy, they can take away the phones instead. My teachers lack security, one time a kid brung a flare to school, now it was at lunch time when he lit it up and walked down the halls but lunch is at 11:04 and we start school at 8am, so that means he had it in the building for about 3 hours.

Not to mention at my school my mom works there as a para, and paras and teachers will also get their phones taken away. • @Void.Creature

My school almost did this despite us being in the UK because this was an issue over here too. We already aren’t allowed are phones to be seen or heard when on school grounds unless it’s pick up and we’re outside or waiting late in reception; and if they still felt it was an issue, they should’ve monitored us better and just continue taking phones like you said.
However, their sh1t treatment of disabled children in our school is what they should actually be focusing on. Even if a kid just broke a leg or something, only teachers can open the elevators and this can make you late to class (which they punish you for) and dont even get me started on when they put barriers up during the finals exams. they block off the mid section of the school so you constantly have to take longer ways using multiple stairs. One time I had to take all 3 sets of stairs in only a few minutes to get to my class because I couldn’t get in the elevator and through the top without my TA (support staff member, im autistic and in a special needs unit that’s conjoined with main school) so I ended up getting there panting and in severe pain then had to leave the class. I’ve had friends be left in classrooms and had to crawl to get out because if a kid loses mobility in their legs, they chuck them in a hospital grade wheelchair and then neglect them a bunch because they refuse to do their job and watch a child; making them miss classes and be unable to get basic needs like allowance to the bathroom.
But instead of fixing all of this, they worry about phones and the dress code. They ended up not banning it for some reason, but they created a punishment system specifically related to if they catch you using your phone, and if you get high up enough they aren’t against keeping your phone for several days. WHICH is very flawed, like you already punish the disabled kids enough, at least let em have some contact since you avoid them like the plague. This school is so damn sh1t, it’s going to hell.

In Indiana, they have already banned phones. If you need to text your parents, it's needed. My brother DOES NOT like the cellphone ban. He's fine with it, I guess. But he is not able to text my mom about how he loves her or able to tell her about something bad happening.

What about people who don't wear bra's? I suppose they could just buy one or... Sneak it in with their underwear. I mean boxers do have pockets sometimes

My school is trying to ban phones. And would just give us laptops to carry around school. Which in my opinion is way worse. Cause in my school you don't get lockers till 8th grade which means you would have to carry the laptop around in your bag which those are already extremely heavy from the many books and notebooks we have to carry. So i feel it could result in back pain. From how much we have to carry around. And it also quite aligns with everything said in the video. That some students might not be able to get medical attention or medication when they need it cause they don't have cellphones.

I’ve never actually gone to a school that allows phones ( basically no one at the time had one in primary) and my intermediate didn’t allow them and when I started college (high school) they had just put in a phone ban. It was banned cus of students taking videos of others without their consent and posting them online which lead to a massive number of cyber bullying cases in my school. Now I’ve got a pretty small school (about 800 ppl) and most teachers are pretty chill with u using ur phone for an emergency (or just to take a photo of the whiteboard for class notes) as long as u ask permission first. But if it’s not super important like u forgetting ur pe gear then u have to go down to the office and the office ladies are super nice. But if it ever comes to a school wide emergency like a lockdown then the teachers would likely let us use our phones. Also they don’t put your phone in some kinda locker that some schools do, u’re allowed to keep them in your bag but with my math teacher he’ll ask u to leave ur phone on ur desk if u ask to go to the bathroom during class. My school also doesn’t care if ur phone is turned off or not as long as it’s on silent or a low volume.

I’m a high schooler in Texas, this is so relatable on so many levels. I have hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome that comes with a lot of other conditions like POTS and the TMJ issues you have (though much less severe). My school just outright refused to support me with these disabilities for 3 years, making it extremely difficult to study. It all came to a head at the end of my junior year (this past April/May), when I had to be absent from school for the last two months to get IV fluids. I ended up getting surgery to place a portacath to make IV access easier. My school did not like this and long story short I now have a 44 and 73 on my transcript which will definitely screw up my chances of getting into competitive colleges (not like I would’ve had a chance at being at the top 10% of my class anyways, there 600 kids in my class with 4,000 ish in the whole school like you). Now I’m on homeschool tho and it’s much better. Needless to say, public school is messed up in so many levels (including the phone policy, which is also stupid at my school) and needs to change

i find this super frustrating, i have adhd and often times if im about to break down i need to vent and i dont trust consolers much bc theyll put stuff on my record, i also have intense periods that i need tl have birth control but even then the pain is still horrible and i hate going into the office and being like “hey the pain from being an ez-y-squeeze ketchup bottle right now is so bad i need tl drug myself”

Some of my teachers give us 6 hall passes a trimester. ONLY 6. I have a health issue where I have a shorter digestive system, so I need to got to the bathroom a bit more often than most. So after those are up, NO MORE LEAVING THE CLASSROOM DURING CLASS. So like, What do they expect me to do, poo myself?

Oh, yeah, I just found out about this last week when we went back to school. I don’t have a phone, my parents don’t let me, but my school has been getting more and more strict with their anti-phone policy and I think it’s getting outrageous. I wouldn’t be surprised if they get completely banned in the next two years.

if there's a problem with people using phones in class, I have a perfect solution: Teach in a way kids want to learn. I rarely have classmates on their phones in classes with teachers that make engaging but not overwhelming lessons. And those same teachers don't have problems with kids falling asleep either. Guess why? They make lessons engaging and get students invested. The kids that do still use phones use them for reasons that are actual necessities. Like, recording problems, keeping contact with their parents when necessary, and medical stuff. They'd rather shift blame off of themselves than invest in better training and pay for their teachers.

This is so dumb, I'm a good kid and I've never pulled out my phone during class. I just want to be able to have my phone on me Incase of an accident (especially bc we're in America and everyone has a gun for some reason) Fuck the school system.

I don't think my school's banning phones (i hope not, at least), but every year below mine(senior school), has chromebooks provided by the school and they use them in most lessons(i think) and I've seen them use their chromebooks all throughout break and lunch and no one cares, but then teachers come and tell us off whenever we're on our phones. And, to be honest, if I really did need to contact home, I wouldn't be able to put my hand up in class to do so, probably due to to my introverted nature.

I graduated from high school since about 2 months ago (my school was like a school ranging from middle to high school so yea we had to share the school with middle schoolers), throughout my seinor year of high school, only the middle schoolers were the only ones that had to put the phone in the pouch every morning when they entered the school (except for high schoolers they only had to put it in their backpack) because teachers has seen the middle schoolers were being on their phone constantly not listening to the teacher even disrespecting them that they made one of the teachers there quit. They would also record fights or bullying others then posting it on social media but I sometimes wonder how they gonna contact their parents when they have a serious health issues or like anything threatening happening in the school. Even I remember those times where the high schooler even the people in my grade were talking about how bad the middle schoolers were (sorry if it seems long and confusing i just do not know how to word it)

This feels more like an "america is a screwed up place" moment than it really being the schools fault, with the medical problems thing any sane human (probably not americans) would see that and allow that person a telecommunications device as an important exception, or at the very least a dumb phone (non-smartphone phone)

  • @EvanOnPawzz14
    @EvanOnPawzz14 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

I know exactly why. I’m the one who started it.
They’re banning phones due to prank calls. They locate the call to the school, and get accused.
