  • Welcome to DESIGN SEED!
Todays episode on Design Seed we will be revealing a transformation of a 2-storey terrace house. This is an extraordinary house built by Sime Darby in 2009 but totally transformed just 10 years later by its architect owner to suit the lifestyle of her family.
The outcome of this restructured floor plan is an extraordinary transformation, where you can enjoy the natural lighting from within the property and yet be able to enjoy a view.
The house is a critical comment on all new terrace housing that rarely introduces natural ventilation and day light.
The valuable takeaway from this project is to learn and be exposed,
that the standard floor plans of most conventional properties are not crafted to suit every single household.
Or could it be, the lifestyle of today’s habitation of Malaysian’s has evolved?
Is it time for greater attention to be emphasized into the design of the new floor plans of today’s modern development that could permit for easy personalization?
Share your comments below and let us know what are the challenges that you are facing with your property?
In our next episode, we will be knocking the doors to some hidden cafes with strong design influence which could hopefully inspire you guys and uplift the awareness and boost our Malaysian Design scene.

Thanks. This is more relevant to Malaysian lifestyle as most of us reside in a terrace intermediate (and Condo) , not bungalows, semi dees or corners.

The owner-architect has a number of original ideas and executed them all well. Bravo to her. I liked that there are 2 areas in the house where sunlight can beam in in addition to the front and back. And the rooftop for the husband to take photos, hobbies, is just amazing.

Red brick ventilation, perforated metal staircases, natural lighting created from air wells....adds to new dimensions to modern tropical living. Great stuff. Hope design seed continues to challenge architecture norms and push its boundaries where there are no limits.

Wow! Just wow! I like the natural lighting in almost every nook of the house; I like the detached C-channel to cover the possible stains in the flat roof; I like when it is lighted at night; I like the perforated stairs to let the air pass through; I like the two courtyards and the wet kitchen facing the alfresco. Indeed a magnificent transformation. Thank you Design Seed for featuring such wonderful architecture, kudos also to Khor Jee Ee!

I love your points at the end of the video. While not everyone realise we all need good ventilation and natural lighting, they are fundamental, I am not sure how much the design of terrace houses has evolved so that even terrace houses can have good ventilation and natural lighting, with design that makes sense.

Really wonderful to see what is a very typical home that wouldn't be out of place here in Europe, totally transforming into a home that enhances your sense of well being by bringing light, space and more welcoming and versatile spaces that flow through the building. Malaysia really has fantastic, creative talent.

Yo I like this. It also give Dogen's custom house vibe which, obviously, I like it.
Also, the problem with terrace house is most of em lack natural light and some has poor ventilation. The newer design is better but the old one is...oh lord. It feel stuffy, especially if one don't put ac. This aunty is a successful architect fs. Not only she make her house look fancy but also upgrade the ventilation, natural light and greenery. Good job👍🏻
