A viewer suggestion and a delightfully beautiful song. A Rainy Night in Soho by the Pogues was such a lovely surprise. The Pogues - / @thepoguesofficial
I visited a Pogues concert in 88..and the whole audience went crazy respectively the peak of the concert was when they played their song "Medley" (A song combined of 3 different short irish traditional tracks = starting with "Recruiting Sergeant"/then a short instrumental interlude titeled "Rocky Road to Dublin"/ ending with "The Galway Races")..I truely suggest to check that out as well it´s a very energetic tune.
We had this song at my younger brother's funeral at the end of November last year. The lovely lad introduced me to The Pogues all those years ago. God bless you, Mark
Hidden gem. Their greatest song ever. And the video is a pure magic. I saw it 1991 being 16 and I was flattened and I am in awe now. I am crying, being 48.
The Pouges were and still are my favourite band. If you grew up in London in the late 80's and 90's there music was the back drop to the rain filled sad streets of our drunken old town. Thank you.
Shane McGowan is a lyric genius, if something of a wreck of a man, bless him. I have every Pogues album, and they range from raw, raucous trad/punk Irish to romantic and lush, but always honest. Their original name was Pogue Mahone, but changed because radio stations learnt what that translated to ("Kiss My Arse"), shortening it to just Pogues ("Kisses"). Their song Fairytale of New York, with Kirsty MacColl, is a Christmas staple, while Summer in Siam is another great romantic piece. For something more hard edged I'd suggest Turkish Song of the Damned. Love the Pogues!
Póg Mo Thóin (very similar pronounciation to Pog Mahone) means 'kiss my arse'. I always presumed this was their old name but now you say it, did they go by Pogue Mahone? Fucking cheek of the BBC making them change it! Have all their albums as well. As a Tipperary native I know many of the places he mentions in songs, which give them extra beauty to me!
Some might say he is a wreck of a man and whilst they might not be entirely wrong, I prefer to think of him as an angel that got lost on his way to God, an accidental blessing the likes of which we'll never see again
For a troubled guy, he sure knows how to write lines that hit you right in the heart. They can really hurt, cry, heal, or cause a smile. An unbelievable amount of understanding and empathy in his lyrics and voice. Was great watching your reaction. It's a beautiful natural reaction to the entire piece. Most are coming from a vocal/guitar/etc coach angle or already a bit jaded from thousands of tunes. Plus you're quite stunning. So, a lucky a husband Way to go you crazy bastard lol
Shane is a genius. His lyrics are so deep and thought provoking. As Christy Moore said.. ""I love you baby", said Shane McGowan from Puckaun in Co Tipperary. I took him by the hand and I gazed into his eyes and I kissed him on the lips and I said "Shane, I love you baby too""
The measure of my dreams......(Shane is so nuanced, he is actually talking about a measure of whisky, 😉very clever, simply untouchable). Really enjoyed this , I sent it to a girl in Serbia 🇷🇸 from Liverpool UK 🇬🇧 8 years ago, we're currently looking out onto the Ocean in Greece, and I've moved to Belgrade a few years back. She cried at video ....thanks for the memories x I hope life serves everyone reading, happiness and health 💖.....
My wife and her friends were in a small town beside home in Ireland for food and drinks and met Shane... they got him into the back of a small hatchback and landed him to our local pub out in the country..... he had a fair skinfull but sang dirty oul town in a way that would bring tears to a stone..... a poet and a gentleman
The Old Main Drag is probably the greatest song Shane MacGowan the singer has ever written - no one else in the 80s sung about the seedier side of london especially the flotsam and jetsum of rent boys selling their bodies. Waltzing Matilda of the Rum Sodomy & The Lash album is also out of this world
The poetry and the voice is Mr Shane McGowan, a TRUE legend. You'd miss out on the greatest story of genius vs madness ever told. Or the need for both, to create wonderful, timeless art. Check out Shane !
'Ladies, find yourself a punk that is emotional and kind enough to dedicate a song like this to you' .... you have no idea how much you hit the nail on the head there. You said you don't know the band, yet that was your first impression of Shane (the vocalist). Holy shit. I'm blown away. That is Shane! I recorded with Shane for two weeks. We released a single together (might be worth a reaction video) that charted in the top 10 in Ireland. Cruachan - Ride On
@@catsarai-genxrewind5271 He was, and just to elaborate on what I originally said. Shane was a full on punk in the 70's. When the Pogues started, you can hear a lot of punk in the early stuff. Hope you do check our song, you can find it anywhere but i have a video of it on my own TH-cam channel, just search for Cruachan featuring shane mac gowan ride on :)
I shared the treasure of Shane MacGowan’s words, melodies and music with my ex wife and before that with three other girls . It’s best to share Shane. They got the best part of those relationships😐
I have loved the Pogues since they first got together & seen them live so many times .... Shane McGowan is a poetic genius - that one line "You're the measure of my dreams" is so beautiful ....
Shane was and remains a true genius. He would certainly have crossed over into eternal oblivion long ago with his self destructive lifestyle had a good woman not loved him and saved him. The band were originally called "Pogue Mahone", the anglicisation of the Gaelic Irish language phrase "póg mo thóin" , meaning "kiss my arse" The one song from among their many, many gems that the Pogues will be remembered for is without question, Fairytale of New York. It is a heartbreaking and bittersweet but still wonderfully uplifting Christmas song and a duet with the late and much missed Kirsty McColl (another wonderful rabbit hole for you to go down) so not perhaps appropriate to react to now in the middle of summer, but even if you do check it out and discover it's beauty and greatness for yourself before hand, you have to promise me that you will play it in December. Remember, that's a promise!!! Oh and ps, I absolutely love what you are doing on your channel ❤️😊 You won't find until you have a hundred thousand subscribers.
His "good woman" physically abused him, punching him and throwing objects at him, and Shane not able to kill a fly. If it were he who abused her there would be an outcry of epic proportions. When will society learn that spousal abuse is not to be tolerated no matter which spouse perpetrates it!
I'm Irish. This is one of my favourite songs ever. The verse "We watched our friends grow up together. And we saw them as they fell. Some of them fell into Heaven. Some of them fell into Hell" holds a particualrly poignant meaning for me
Lovely to see somebody enjoy a song like you do; you have to have lived a bit to truly enjoy the wide spectrum of music you say you like. I love your animation, its as pleasureable to watch as listening to the song, haha. keep 'em coming and hello from London UK.
"You are the measure of my dreams" may be one of the most poetic lines ever written to describe a long-term relationship. Sadly, he was referring to his alcoholism.
My Favorite Pogues song , I am sure that now there will be a whole new following of his music now Shane has died , yes indeed the line " you're the measure of my dreams " is a good one ,he was a true man of verse
The most beautiful masculine love song EVER written! A song written by a bloke FOR blokes who sometimes find it difficult to express into words exactly what their girlfriends/wives mean to them (yes! I've been there before!). If you're looking for words to beat a simple "I love you" in a song, try the last line of "you're the measure of my dreams" That's the genius of Shane McGowan.
According to his widow Victoria, Shane wrote this song with a nod to have the great Frank Sinatra to sing this. Of course, imagine Ol' Blue Eyes having a go at these words and imagine the results. But Shane and the boys di a fine job, especially James Fearnley's piano on this. Masterful!
I love the Pogues and its really touching I must say as a man that you were in tears when listening. I remember this song from my school days I will think of another song you will like by the Pogues like "Misty Morning, Albert Bridge" that's very romantic too I think you will love. Kudos on pronouncing the name of the band properly some people find it a stumbling block. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the song Cat
Thanks. S hane MacGowan is one of the most brilliant poet, Rocker Singers ever known. The lyric about being" the light that shines before me And the Measure of his dreams! Brilliant
You know your a great song writer when Bob Dylan personally goes out his way to come and see you The secret with Shane is people see his looks and automatically think ugly but his mindset is the real beauty Haunted was written for Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen
you couldn't go wrong listening to Shane MacGowan & The Popes performing She Moves Through The Fair its a beautiful and my favourite poem/ballad in his inimitable punk fashion and the words so romantic. Shane MacGowan was the lead singer of the Pogues

Cat, thank you for this reaction. The song was truly beautiful, but seeing how much you were enjoying it made it that much better!
Aww! Thanks. Lyrically, it is a beautiful song.

I always get a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye when I hear this song. Soooo much feeling in Shane's voice and in the music!
Every time!
Cat, sad sad news. The singer Shane McGowan passed away today Nov-30-2023.
He was probably one of the greatest lyric writers ever.
Shane McGowan is the world's best living lyricist. His birthday is Christmas Day. Not sure how many he's got left, but his words are immortal.
The Pogues are a rabbit hole well worth going down!

Funny but that isn't true
That isn't true. But very funny.
The greatest song of Shanes career, if you ask me

The Ginger Lady by his bed is a bottle of whiskey. Awesome song.
I’m pretty sure it’s his lover/wife

Shane is a treasure. I suggest "The Broad Majestic Shannon" and "Fairytale of New York". Two of the most beautiful songs ever written.
don't forget the song A Pair of Brown Eyes
#! : Fairytale. #2: Summer in Siam
Bottle of Smoke and The Old Main Drag and Lullaby of London !
..one of their hit songs! They had many. Shane MacGowan is a poet in the class of Keats and Yates. Thanks for reacting to this lovely little tune!
And I cry more.

He is probably one of the greatest song writers Ireland ever had
