    Good song. I recommend anything off their album 'If I Should Fall From Grace With God'. The guy singing is a legend. One of the best songwriters ever in my opinion. Shane MacGowan is the man.

  • @davy_K
    @davy_K 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    This is peak MacGowan when he spat out lyrics in waves. There's loads of references here -including the Irishmen who joined the International Brigade who fought in the Spanish Civil War. Cuchulainn was an ancient Irish warrior - one of the berserkers - who sprouted blood from the top of his head with anger.

    Accordion and pennywhistle are what you are hearing. The Pogues were a thrilling blend of Irish traditional music and punk rock. This album was the first of theirs that I ever heard and I was enthralled from the first note. Shane McGowan's songwriting is absolutely genius. What a poet. Thank you for this reaction vid!! And you did a great job of pronouncing the Gaelic word Cuchulainn. Koo-KULL-ehn... very close.

    Shane McGowan, The Pogues founder and lead singer was a punk rocker of Irish descent. He wanted to create something that would bring Irish music to the people. So the result was this mix of Irish folk music with the intensity of attitude of punk rock. As for instruments, I can't say for certain what you're hearing, but it may be the tin whistle?

    Accordion, Tinwhistle/Pennywhistle, guitar, and banjo, I think.
    I'm stoked to see someone reacting to music Ive listened to from basically birth to present.
    The Pogues had a very punk feel for irish folk.

  • @ConnbineHarvester
    @ConnbineHarvester 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    There's no point me suggesting any bands here, you're gonna end up listening to every band I've ever liked at some stage anyway! Instruments are accordion, tin whistle, drums, bass, banjo, bouzouki, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and it sounds like someone is playing spoons too. Usually the pipes if there are any in Irish music are Uileann (meaning elbow in Gaelic) pipes. Bagpipes are played by blowing into them. Cú Chulainn was a mythological warrior from the north of Ireland but the song seems to be mostly about getting hammered drunk to me. The narrator in the song may have been an Irish Nationalist who went to Spain during the Spanish civil war.

    I know this comment is 2 years late but for anyone wondering: Cuchaillin is an Irish mythological hero and this song is basically a modern retelling of a fairytail. The song is also antifascist saying "You heard the rattling death trains in cologne (trains to the concentration camps), Frank Ryan (IRA member and Irish leader in the spanish civil war against Franco) bought you whiskey in a brothel in Madrid, And you decked some fucking blacksirt (nazi) who was cursing all the yids (jews)." it continues like this singing of liberty for the oppressed (Blacks and Paks and Jocks) basically saying that the great fight for liberty is like the story of the great warrior Cuchaillin. And obviously beyond this it is about getting drunk and having fun in while trying to get back to Ireland.
