The UK's favourite Christmas song for a reason - an absolute stone cold classic. Also, a sad reminder of what we missed with the sad passing of the lovely Kirsty MacColl. The name The Pogues is a shortened version of the Irish language phrase "póg mo thóin", which means "kiss my arse".
I went out with a girl whose mother spoke Gaelic. I asked her to say something in Gaelic and what she said sounded beautiful; with a poetic lilt. She then told me what she said in English and it was incredibly filthy!

This is one of my favorite songs. You can't much more Irish than this: sad and beautiful, tears and smiles, and love and hate. "An Irishman has an abiding sense of tragedy which sustains him through tempory periods of joy."
Just listen to the music...it's beautiful. All kinds of people have different life experiences. Their voices, the Irish vibe, the beautiful orchestral backup, all adds up to a iconic song.
Can’t believe someone did this song. It’s Iconic. You have to know the background. The song is about the dreams the Irish had coming here during the famine in 1848- and on. In Ireland they were promised streets of gold in NY. All immigrants were promised this. Yet they found the civil war and poverty. This is classic Irish storytelling. Sad and true. She is playing a character in the video. She was a wonderful person.
As the group was surfacing from a dive, a powerboat moving at high speed entered the restricted area. MacColl saw the boat coming before her sons did. Louis, age 13 at the time, was not in its path, but Jamie, age 15, was. She was able to push him out of the way (he sustained minor head and rib injuries), but she was struck by the boat which ran over her. MacColl suffered severe chest injuries and died instantly.
An emotional bombshell of a song. It is full of cynicism and depression. Yet, underneath all the negativity there is a subtext of hope and optimism. This song puts your emotions through a ringer.

My old band would play this song every December gig we had. I took the male lead and my girlfriend at the time would sing opposite me. It was the only time in her life she ever took a stage, much less sang in front of an audience. This song is such an absolute classic that we'd barely get a half dozen notes into the keyboard intro and the dance floor was packed. It's such a rush when 500 to 1,000 people are all singing along with you. It's not Christmas without Fairytale Of New York!
This is my favourite Christmas song by far. For the "lucky ones" the day is a happy one, but to many, because of that expectation, it is misery. Blues at it's British best.
This is my all time favourite Christmas song. Kirsty's voice is amazing, it's a great story. It always makes me cry when I hear it and think of the loss of Kirsty McColl. Great singer-songwriter taken far too soon.
One of the greatest Christmas songs ever. It's not just some schmaltzy, syrupy sweet song about getting gifts or Santa. Not everyone experiences joy and happiness at Christmas. The call and response of "I could have been someone"/"Well, so could anyone" is honestly how a lot of couples look at one another. But, at the end of the day there is love between the two. And musically, it's really beautiful. The Hives and Cyndi Lauper did a song called "A Christmas Duel", which is like a modern answer to the Pogues classic. Both are fantastic.
Thanks for reacting to one of my all time favorites. And, as a self proclaimed Fagott.myself, this song doesn’t offend me in the slightest bit. Love the Pogues, but absolutely adore Kirsty MacColl. The singer, Shane Macgowan, wrote the song with Jem Finer, the banjo player. You continue to amaze because 1) you select such interesting songs to react to and 2) you pick up on what is going on in the song so quickly. I could see someone being really turned off by this song if they don't "get" it. I've been familiar with it for years, and, as far as I'm concerned, you pinned it down right away and opened my eyes to some aspects. BTW--this is my favorite "Christmas song;" for many people, there are some sad aspects to the season and this gives voice to some of them. Thank you!
I’m an American and this was one of the first bands my parents ever showed me. They had a full live show on VHS and for some reason i really wanted to be an accordion player 🤔
I wanted to share my comments so others unfamiliar with this song could understand how much a song means to a son who lost his mammy one year ago today. Took a year before I could bring myself to listen to mam’s favorite group. Best times ever me and mam seeing the Pogues and catching Shane’s blessing on us both, 🖕🏼The Middle Finger 🖕🏼😂 ❤️
I am so glad you reacted to this song. Shane MacGowan shows so much emotion through his voice. Listen to "A Pair Of Brown Eyes" , The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, or Dirty Old Town.
Backstory: Kirsty McColl who was a guest vocalist with songwriter Shane McGowan on this classic song is a fine example of a hero Mother. She was vacationing with her sons in a safe swimming area but a high-speed boat came into their waters. Kirsty's first son was safe away, but her other younger son was directly in front of the speeding boat. Kirsty bravely pushed her son out of the way of the boat saving her son's life and was instantly killed. She had many notable songs of her own in her career but she will forever be that beautiful voice with the gruff Shane McGowan in the now-classic world-wide accepted Pogues Christmas song "Fairytale of New York." There is nothing more poignant than the down and out, drunk, destitute, poor people singing a Christmas song with sincerity. RIP Kirsty. Shane, you write great songs ("Haunted" with Sinead O'Conner is another stunner) -- stay off the booze and get your teeth fixed will you please?
John LaStrada - He has had his teeth done, saw him on telly about a year ago, he doesn’t look right with them though, suppose I just got used to hi without them.
I don't know why I find reaction videos SO compelling. But I love watching people discover things that I've loved for years! It's really satisfying. And A LOT of people have caught on to that fact, and so many reactions are not genuine to my eye! Yours are, and I really appreciate it!
Not actually true. They censored word version was re-recorded nearly 30 years ago by Kirsty and has been played before. TOTP for example. The BBC wanted that version to be played on the family type shows during the day on one channel only. Last year the uncut version was sung word for word on the main BBC1 TV channel on Christmas Day on the most watched program of all Christmas-James Corden's Gavin and Stacey.

Thank you!
Probably one of the most melodic tracks of all time & stills make me cry listening to Kirsty’s beautiful voice!
My absolute favorite Christmas song of all time God bless and merry Christmas good job
You are so lovely for your openness and feeling for music.
Music is the soundtrack of our lives.
This is my favorite christmas song. I listen to it all year, not just on christmas lol
The lovely and much missed Kirstie Mc Call❤ Thank you.
That's the best Christmas song ever.
As a mick from NY i love this song, it's played not just at Christmas time in my house lol
it's been my favorite xmas song for over 30 years now
Big big smile on my face watching your reaction on the second verse 😂. Love your reaction vids, keep em coming! 😊
I’m an American and this was one of the first bands my parents ever showed me. They had a full live show on VHS and for some reason i really wanted to be an accordion player 🤔
A contemptuous relationship, still bound together by the years of familiarity and unconditional love. ❤❤❤❤
This is one of my favorite Pogue songs, even though I end up shedding a tear. This was sung at Gerry's funeral in the movie P.S. I Love You.
It's so poetic ... a whole story in a few minutes - my favourite Christmas song ever :)
This is my favourite Christmas song !
Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is one of the best albums ever made.
"The three things for certain in the British Navy."
"If I Should Fall From Grace With God" is my fave. Classic.
Rainy Night in Soho is amazing
Yea Brill album. I remember buying it on vinyl on release. I think I got Red Roses For Me first though.
@@BS-jr3dl every song on that album is a belter but "Turkish song of the dammed" has got to be one of the best.
One of the best Christmas songs ever!
The People of the UK and Ireland love this at Christmas time.
We still do
It is so classic and amazing the BBCs a twat for cancelling it.
@@eviehargestx3935 the BBC are part of the antiwhite establishment.

This song's been moving me to tears for 35 years. Best Christmas song ever by a mile.
I am so glad you reacted to this song. Shane MacGowan shows so much emotion through his voice. Listen to "A Pair Of Brown Eyes" , The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, or Dirty Old Town.
"I could have been someone,
But so could anyone,
You took my dreams from me,
When I first saw you"
Some of the most beautiful lyrics ever written
@@bjorntoulouse7523 - Thanks Chris -- yeah I agree. Shane might not look right being too perfect. Thanks for letting me know.
I am pretty sure he has been sober since 2016 or he only has a beer very rarely
I'm First Comment Denier - Glad to hear it, it always amazed me that he was still alive. Happy New Year, Shane. RIP Kirsty.
I don't know why I find reaction videos SO compelling. But I love watching people discover things that I've loved for years! It's really satisfying. And A LOT of people have caught on to that fact, and so many reactions are not genuine to my eye! Yours are, and I really appreciate it!
and now you know the greatest Christmas song of all time. It'll never be the same again. :)
Most genuine reaction I've seen
I can’t believe BBC wanted to ban this song after going for 30 years!
Ikr
British Broadcasting Corporation? More like buncha bloody cunts
Defund the BBC
@@binboy4034 Always becareful of what you wish for
You can tell this young women is from a different generation !!
The words are what make the song, live and let live !!!
This is what THE powers that be want to take from us
SENDING LOVE AND STRENGTH FROM IRELAND 🙋🇨🇮🇺🇸🇨🇮🎻🎵🎶
Finally someone has reacted to The Pogues!! One of my favorite of their songs. Loved your facial reactions as well as your review. You should check out some other songs, Dirty Old Town, Sunnyside of the Street, and The Band Played Waltzing Matilda to name a few.
They mention " queers in the GLC" on their song " Transmetropolitan" .
Ur the first that hasnt stopped the song to comment, u listened the whole way thru and i thank u for that because this song deserves it, in uk and Ireland this song is loved and respected and pkayed every year as the best xmas song ever as is Kirsty, Shane and the band, luv it👌💖
Marvelous song! Well done, Shane! And wonderful Kirsty MacColl taken from us far too early. Her father was Ewan MacColl, who wrote 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', made immortal by Roberta Flack.
Always chokes me up that song. Pure life in song format.
The official Christmas carol for 2020
My favorite Christmas song :) The Pogues are geniuses, even tripping drunk ;)
So surprised someone is reacting to this song. One of my absolute favs.
It's not really a 'big' song in America.
Probably due to the language
I thought everyone in the world must have heard this song by now. It's one of the first songs I ever remember hearing in the early 80's
@@roller325 which says a lot about the state of the "land of the free" these days. Its ok to gun down innocent kids in school but you can't use any "bad language". Political Correctness my ass!!!!
