As a black person with lots of tattoos, what that black guy said is SO TRUE. I take a chance every damn time. My best friend is a tattoo artist and I'm so happy when she posts the tattoos she's done on me. Not for myself but for all the other people out there with a similar skin tone as me.
People still believe the "myth" that tattoos won't show up on black skin and just in general where I live at least black people or anyone that isn't white goes to other people like them for services. Things are changing pretty quickly where I am but that's how it was for so long.
I’m light skin but still have issues finding a good empathetic artist in LA/Inland empire (so cal) And I’m gay so most shops are honestly un-work-wit-able 🤦🏽♂️
maybe it's because im German and we have pretty harsh child labour laws - but kid tattooers make me uncomfortable because they are essentially being exploited for labour, and increasingly, for social media clout and consequently more money.
I didn't realise there was child labour in Germany? The law says that children can't work under the age of 14 which is pretty standard for most countries. Can you elaborate? I've never been to Germany so I've never seen for myself if there is or not. I completely agree with it being exploitation. That child might get to 18 and decide they don't want to be on the internet but it's too late.
@nicolehawley912 I probably didn't make myself very clear haha - we DONT have child labour, that's my point. Employing children in any capacity is criminalized. For everyone between the ages of 14 to 18 different laws also apply, like no night shifts!
@@sarahmarx2267 oh my gosh 😅 yes, rereading your comment you did say that, my brain didn't register harsh meaning strict for some reason. Thanks for clearing that up, I feel a little silly haha.
About the second video : i'm working in a tattoo shop with two black persons (my boss is darkskin and my coworker is light skin) and we do not have many black customers, actually... My boss says it's more complicated culturally for black people + many stereotypes hold strong within the black community (that tattoo won't show on their skin etc). Some black customers that we did have started by asking "is it possible to tattoo me ? Will it show on my skin ? Will it heal correctly ?" it's sad. We do try to advertise the dark skins we get to tattoo to show that anything is possible but we don't have many demands unfortunately !
i think a huge problem for the guy was "oh yeah i did dark skin tattoos" but then they didnt put those on instagram? but the white tattoos are on there
Im a tattoo artist in South Africa. I get a lot of darker clients. I know in the industry over here is also very similar. I've heard mostly that tattoos don't photograph well on darker skin and the artists want to show their work. It's difficult to up the contrast on a photo to make the work "pop". I always take photos regardless of what skin tone they're on. Always keep your work photographed on your phone to show them instead of chasing them to instagram.
I wish the guy talking about that study ended with, “THIS JUST IN…men are idiots and think women with tattoos are easy.” Instead of “if you are a woman who has a tattoo your attractiveness level marginally drops, but at least you’re more approachable!” Gee thanks my guy I’m so glad I got these for you
So true. What I was thinking too was, how for men it's OK to find a woman who is tattooed, but once they are together they kinda want "a say" with if they get more tattoos? Like... It's OK for them to get women "easy" but once they are in a relationship with them they want to control what their girlfriends/wife's get or don't get? I have heard so many reddit stories of women clearly stating they want to have (more) tattoos and all of the sudden men don't want them so get some (even if they previously have been tattooed). On the flip side though... I am a woman, and I have the feeling that in my eyes other women with tattoos and piercings are so much more attractive. I am actually a hetero woman, but whenever I see another woman with some tats and piercings I am like "Damn she is pretty". For some reason I just gravitate to those women more, and want to be friends with them, but also find them attractive all of the sudden 😅. And I wonder is this just some kind of tribal consciousness between tattooed women? Like "Yaaaay we are in the same club". I feel like we just have this instant connection of kinship, while men just think about "Should I hit/date that or not"? Anywho I just feel so much more attractive with my tattoos, even tough my husband has a tough time with them. Sucks for him I guess 😅
What?!?! The tattoo community doesn't like that?!? Me and my friends went to get tattooed and of course the question came up " do you know how to tattoo black skin". (bad experience with a horribly desaturated barely there tattoo)The white tattoo artist looks at us without making any type of facial reaction AT all and says " I used to work in Bridgeport". So the answer to that was "Oh! So you've ONLY done black people!" We all got amazing tattoos.
I had a chat with my artist about this since we live in a VERY white/ South Asian area of England and he’s had quite a few darker skinned people come in with really messed up tattoos (from other studios who got too big for their boots) that ended up needing covering up :( gave him some great experience with darker skin tones though and he always explains to clients that their skin will affect how the tattoo’s saturation and colouring looks after healing. I think the issue is that a LOT of artists just think “How hard can it be?” And just go way too heavy on the black ink which causes a lot of blowouts and it fades anyways! Glad you and your friends ended up with some lovely work!
I feel from an artist perspective when it comes to posting pictures of tattoos done on darker skin they can tend to be harder to see/ not pop like on white skin so you're just naturally drawn to the ones with a lighter background. Like a pencil drawing on a white paper vs a brown piece of paper, humans naturally go for the thing that stand out more
@@TheDeviIDogg As an artist, I agree with this and also dislike the thinking behind it. Tattoos aren't just art. The clients aren't just canvases or paper. It reminds me of the fashion's industries justification for using bone-thin models being that "it just shows off the clothes better". Sure, it might but if you expect a real person who isn't bone-thin/a singular body type to wear those clothes it would be nice to see what they look like on a person who isn't bone-thin/one body shape. I want to know how the thing I'm buying will look on me or someone similar to me. Even more so when that thing is permanent and can't be returned like a piece of clothing can be An artist only having white customers on their portfolio broadcasts to me that they intend to only cater to lighter skinned people and don't think dark-skinned clients deserve to themselves with their tattoos (or even worse they don't think the art looks good on dark skin). It sucks because any artist can say "sure, I've worked on darker skin" with no evidence to guide me as to whether that work is actually good. And the thing is, sure your eye might be drawn to pictures that "pop" more and therefore most people might be drawn to lightskin pics with contrast but tattoo portfolios aren't galleries to just view for fun. I guarantee you that darkskin people will be drawn to the photos of darkskin tattoos because that's what they are trying to buy/find. If artist care about having darkskin clients then they should show it by catering to darkskin clients too rather than catering to just any random viewership looking through art for fun. eta: As an artist, there are techniques to photographing darkskin to make sure it shows up looking good. Again, because the primary focus is and has been whiteness since the invention of cameras etc, most people have never learnt how to do it well (eg. the camera adjustments that might need to be made). That's just an aside note.
Re: the study I'm not an expert by any means, but here is my input as someone who is currently learning statistics: This study had a sample size of 11! That is *tiny.* Also, it is by no means a controlled study. I'd love to see if this is able to be re-created. One more thing: voluntary bias (the fact that the people in the study volunteered to participate) makes this a biased study. So, y'know, don't take the results at face value cuz like... Damn there's lots of holes in this research.
Also the type of tattoo and placement would have to be taken into consideration. A really heavily tattooed person and someone with a heart on their wrist are two very different aesthetics.
v late response but it could also mean that they went from 1 guy approaching them, to 2. which is really not a statistically significant difference, but when you phrase it as 'they were twice as likely to be approached' it sure sounds like it is
This. I watched this as part of my break from studying for my upcoming statistics exam and this is a fun observation, not a serious study. Can't in good conscience draw any conclusions from it.
I think the tattoo study of women on the beach missed a key element- It's easier to approach someone with a tattoo because they've given you something to strike up a conversation about. It's like wearing a nerdy tee-shirt or something. It's easier to approach and say "Wow, cool tattoo! Did you get that locally?" or something than to try and find a conversation topic to talk about randomly with someone wearing only a bikini, giving no indication of any of their interests/likes.
I assumed it was because people in general assume people with tattoos but especially women are more liberal, less conservative in general due to the alternative nature of tattoos. But you make a good point as well.
@@nbucwa6621yeah i thought it comes from the idea that tattooed women are "easy" even if it isn't true. i currently have only one tattoo (i want more definitely) and i'm a 21 year old virgin lol
The no black people thing is so jacked up and wrong. I was looking for tattoo artists recently and one dude had " do tattoo darker clients, but the colors may not heal the same as they would on normal, ligher skin." Rejected them out of hand for that, absolutely insane. I'm not Black, but if you think white skin is the "normal" skin I don't want to have anything to do with you. Regarding the kid - I used to live in TX, and a child tattooing is definitely illegal there. A friend owns a shop there, and kids aren't even allowed to be in the area where tattooing happens. Not cool.
I completely agree with the idea of tattoos being like a timeline. I started a series on my arm when I found out I was autistic (way later than I should have) and its been like a documentation of my journey.
My therapist and I worked out I'm showing a lot of signs of autism, but getting a diagnosis in our area (NHS, god bless it) had a three year wait list. But embracing that possibility spurred me to get two tattoos I've wanted for a long time as I finally realised a massive part of me makes sense now and my tattoos symbolise that.
@@faithhammond10 I hear you there. It’s a great form of self expression. What designs have you been doing to represent this realm? I’ve been doing Alice in Wonderland critters. It feels right
@@LangwidereLMFT I have Tolkien's drawing of Smaug on my arm, a Realm of the Elderlings tattoo on my leg and a symbol on my wrist which represents Godsend from the Heroes TV show on my wrist. They all mean so much to me. These are books and media that have pulled me through some really hard times.
6:15 it is entirely possible for tattoo artists to ask for POC for their portfolio. Incentivize people with a free/discounted tattoo. Or order dark practice skin. At this point, having no skin diversity is a cycle. We dont just trust people who have no experience to tattoo our skin, so we won't go to people who have no experience. There are ways to do it, but it's about who cares to make the effort
I did say can’t, but with what you said here makes a very good / valid point!! There really shouldn’t be any excuses ever!! Artists should want exclusivity in their portfolio and should think of ways to achieve that!!
For me the reason why people with tattoos are more "approachable" Is because tattoes are conversation starter, and you can compliment them without seen as a pervert
HOOOLY DAMN, those dragon and flower tattoos at 10:38 are INSANE. Instantly followed the artist on insta, all their work is absolutely gorgeous. New tattoo goals unlocked
I have definitely noticed that a lot more men approach me now that I am very visibly tattooed! I'm assuming it's because it gives them an easy excuse to initiate a conversation by complimenting my tattoos. I also think it's related to stereotypes about tattooed women being kinky or more willing to engage in casual sex or whatever, and the belief that the purpose of any kind of body modification is really to receive male attention I absolutely hate it! I just want to be left alone and mind my own business and I don't need to hear any compliments about my tattoos because I already know that they look great, thank you very much. Plus, I'm not even attracted to men!!! Ugh.
I briefly dated a tattoo artist that told me (I'm mixed race btw) he didn't put his black clients into his portfolio because "ink and dark skin just don't mix". I didn't see him long lol
A while back an artist I follow posted a large back piece they did for someone, which was partly done to work with an open back wedding dress. The photos are gorgeous, and it was nice to see someone getting a tattoo FOR their wedding day, instead of being made to feel like it would take away from it.
18:50 when I dyed my hair when I was younger it wasn't a visible trauma thing as much as a control over my expression thing. Not only did I enjoy the colors and being able to express myself but it was also nice to have such control over something that was outwardly expressing myself even when I was struggling with not being able to truly express myself internally about being queer. It also helped cause when/if I ever felt like someone was staring at me and started to become insecure, internally I would think "well of course they're just looking at your bright purple hair". Now I have freeform locs and sometimes people still look at me like I've got two heads but because I did that when I was younger and I'm more sure of myself it doesn't make me feel insecure lol.
I resonate so much with this as a queer kid i bleached my hair because i wanted to have control over my apperence living in an unsupportive household at the time and being told i was gonna burn in hell for eternity weekly by family having any feminine attribute even having my hair past 2 inchs or it being braided seen as bad i desperatly wanted control, it was a horrible bleach job that i did with baking soda and peroxide my friends joked that it looked like dodo stains 😂 my parents made me cut it off immediately they took me to the barbershop i was mad as shi i was crying and full of rage i still to this day dont forgive my parents for it mostly because hair is very sacred to me and the knew what they were doing when they forced me to get it cut off it was a form of control and punishment to tell me we dont like that queer shi and your gonna conform to the way we want you to look . I did the same when i got into my senior year they still had a problem especially my dad he hated that i bleached my hair i did makeup and he would have fliped shi if he found out i was wearing "feminine " clothes to school everyday behind his back ,ill never forget on my graduation day while i was doing my makeup he came into my room and told me to reconsider doingmy makeup because ill look back on today and reget wearing it 😅 jokes on him i did regret it but onky the styke i went for i should have went extra linework detail instead of glitter raccoon 😂
I love that you spend 5-8mins explaining the process of healing your mental health through tattoos just for my brain to go “if you’re going to scar your skin, scar it with art!”
My most recent tattoo artist told me she pulls off econd skin kind of like a command strip (pulling the corners gently straight out, so the adhesive gently lifts up) and omg, it was the best advice I have ever been given, hurt so much less.
@@SeriouslyCreative oh, wow, did not know that, I have always just been told to take it off in the shower because warm water helps loosen the adhesive. The more you know.
Little old lady in a care home! Very warm here for late October, just hanging out with my two cats. Keep thinking about getting tattoos on the tops of my feet
I had a friend in high school who’s grandmother got her first 2 tattoos on the tops of her feet when she was in her mid 70s. They looked great from what I remember! ❤
Sorry for the long comment: I heard that some tattoo artists don’t want to tattoo dark skinned individuals (I am dark skinned as well) because they either: 1. Simply don’t want to 2. Are afraid that they won’t be able to give them the result they are looking for, and don’t want to disappoint them (which is fair and personally, I respect that more). But I personally think it’s just because of the technique the artist uses, that may not be optimal for everyone’s skin type/tone… I have recently begun asking “new” artists (if I reach out to another who is not my normal artist), if they tattoo on dark skin. I asked this female artist (whom I now I have a time to get tatted in November) and she seemed surprised by the question, but did inform me that sometimes dark skin can be hard to work with and may not pick up the ink well (yes, even black). Which is true enough. 6 out of my 20 tats are made by my regular artist. 1 out of 6 tats became slightly faded after a few months even though I religiously followed her instructions (as I’ve done with rest). I’m not mad tbh because that’s just how it can be sometimes… Another thing I was told (by my own regular artist), was that some people don’t post pictures of the dark skinned people they tattoo simply because it can be difficult to capture the tattoo - taking in consideration lighting and vibrancy etc - specially because they don’t want to edit the image too much just to get a clearer image of the tattoo… some people just… don’t post tats on dark skin 😅 I have looked through some artists insta and indeed, A LOT of them don’t really have (many) photos of dark skinned individuals with their ink… 😅 but yeah.. WITH THAT SAID… I do find is disgraceful that some artists turn down potential clients just because of their skin colour without a good reason and just because of their skin colour🙄 plus I have seen in some situations, that some artists who tattoo dark skinned individuals, edit their photos so much so they don’t look dark skinned 🙄 It’s sad and disgusting.
@@e_aa518 and thank YOU for taking your time to read this🙏🏽❤️ I’m happy that my experiences and my words can enlighten and inform people. Racism is a rancid excuse to downgrade others who aren’t ones skin tone/race/ethnicity etc. People are different and that’s what humans unique and special… but we can’t always have everything 😕 but it too makes me happy to see people support others in such situations, even if you (generally) haven’t experienced it🙏🏽 have a blessed day❤️
the one about tattoos and mental health is so real. ive been in therapy for 4 or 5 years with AN and body dysmorphia but getting tattoos has helped me massively and i can actually leave the house in a t shirt now for the first time in around 10 years
I'm a licensed tattooer, a few years ago I helped my nephew who was 9 at the time tattoo a little skull on my leg. the difference between that and that video is I'm not exploiting him, we took photos for our family photo books. I'm not posting saying hes "the youngest tattoo artist" hes not old enough to be licensed. To me its like letting a kid sit in your lap and steer a vehicle on an empty country road.
You’re absolutely right. My son (6) and daughter (5) always talk about my tattoos. We even have “tattoo time” where we draw on each other with washable markers. I recently started learning how to tattoo and they both wanted to watch me tattoo myself. While I was doing it my son asked if he could, so I made him put on gloves and while holding his hand, holding the machine let him do a couple lines. Makes a great memory for us both.
Having practice fake skin come in a shade variety would be a good step to work on the racism. Similar to how hair dressers need to learn different hair types/textures.
Someone told me that I'd regret the 15+ tattoos I'm planning on getting once I'm old and I said: *"I might look like a used teabag, but at least I'll be a decorative one."*
I dated a guy years ago and no joke, he had 3 wolves and a moon tattooed on his back (along with a wolf head shaped Celtic knot). When I say they were bad I mean they were BAAAAAAAD. Completely misshapen blurry messes. He went on to tell me about all the different wolf related anime he liked and how he used to run up onto the hills and howl at the moon until his neighbours started talking to him about it. I'm living with a different guy who is now my fiancée so all's well that ends well I guess lol
The second guy's video resonates with me. Not to say there aren't white men talented at tattooing tan / dark skin, but the difference in my experience was clear as day. I got two palm-sized pieces done by a VERY talented artist with no dark skin on their IG and while they look amazing, they're raised, scarred, and hurt so much for outer bicep pieces. Now I only go to women / POC-owned tattoo shops with diverse artists. Funny enough after this switch, none of my tattoos are raised or scarred. They also hurt so much less, even in spicy areas.
even just watching older ink master episodes, it’s so clear how imbedded racism and colorism in particular plays a part in which clients the artists want. So many would complain about getting the dark skinned clients like dude just say you’re untalented and leave
Girl you make excellent content. I also really appreciate that you sat quietly through the first persons video - nice way to center a person of color when they’re talking about the issues they’ve experienced in the community!
Tbh I think one of the main reasons the tattooed women got approached more has nothing to do with attractiveness or "availability to mate", it's simply that tattoos are a big ass immediately visible conversation topic. If I wanted to approach a stranger in public, especially if my intent was to hit on them, complimenting or asking about something cool, different or unusual they have, be it clothes, hair, tattoos, a dog, etc makes it way less creepy and awkward and allows you to read the general vibes before making any explicit move. Way safer than just going up to any regular joe and trying to break the ice by talking about the weather or some random boring shit like that
I really don’t get/like this whole “tattooed women are easy/less likely to reject you” thing. I would be considered “heavily tattooed” to non-tattooed people. I don’t get tattoos for anyone but myself. Some of my tattoos tell a deeply personal story, others are just a fun concept I wanted tattooed. I have been sexually assaulted by my first ‘partner’ I refuse to call him an ex bf because he was a POS. Just because I have tattoos, does not mean I will magically open my legs for you. In fact, because of my past, I’d consider myself harder to impress/be intimate with than others. Being called ‘easy’ simply because I have tattoos is quite frankly offensive and insulting. You are not entitled to my body because there’s art on it. If you want my attention, you better f@cking impress me/earn it. I owe DONT owe any man/woman/they/them anything.
His take was so weird, like my man, that's not a good thing? Did he really not make the connection that they most likely think "that's a slut with no morals or standards" (be one if you want obviously, but we know it's not meant as a compliment here) and then suggested to get tattoos to attract men? Have I hallucinated that? Also I can imagine that assumption makes certain men even worse at handling rejection, oh my God
We have similar stories and yeah I felt the same way about the whole study. It just gave me the ick and makes me want to keep my tattoos covered up. I don't even like being approached due to my trauma. The whole tattoo perception debate just sounds like the miniskirt debate rehashed. I would love if people would stop trying to figure out if women are "easy" off of random external cues.
I have a tattoo that's a symbol from a video game, and it has some tiny writing as part of it. I thought about leaving the tiny writing off, and decided that would change the over all look more than I want. I thought about trying to represent the tiny writing with little dots or something that would age better, and decided it would be easier to just let the tiny writing blur into whatever representation of itself it becomes.
I ASKED why a certain tattoo artist I liked why he didn't have any black people on his insta. He told me he has black clients....BUT....didn't like how their skin photographed. So, I had to find another person.
Kinda hate the stereotype that tattoos and other mods are related to how traumatized a person is. I've had a lot of anxiety throughout most of my life, and now that I am in a good place mentally and in a happy relationship, I am going to be getting my first tattoo. I'm 28! I've always loved tattoos but I couldn't seriously consider getting one before because of my anxiety. I had to be more mentally healthy before I could do this.
One thing that I noticed in these last years where I've become more and more tattooed is that guys really approach me more, and they ALL approach me asking me something about my tattoos or just giving me compliments about them, and most of the times they are not tattooed. I think that having tattoos is like an easy excuse for them to find a conversation topic. Many times, they also use my tattoos as an excuse to touch me... and that is very creepy and not ok. Me having tattoos doesn't mean that I want you to touch them.
The other day, I was listening to metalcore music while riding my bike and passed by a lady in her 90s, and she waved hi. I waved back and smiled. I thought it was odd or out of the norm, and you could see all my piercings and tattoos. I think it's just that this world is opening. More up to people with tattoos and piercings and not being so judggy.😊
I was just talking about the representation of skin tones with my coworker today! I'm white, but I would absolutely LOVE to see a beautiful array of skin tones when I look at peoples tattoos! Please, show us the melanin! Not gonna lie, Lauren, I had a low key existential crisis when you stated the 9 year old could be your daughter, because you & I are the same age, so I think we shared that feeling 😅 That was so wholesome to think about tattoo aging like that! 🤗💜🥹 Those dragons are Stunning! 😻 😮💨 love how he uses so many words to say people perceive tattooed women as easy 🤦♀️🥀 🙄 of course our trauma gets displayed, it does so whether you you get tattoos/piercings/hair color or not, artsy/aesthetic type personalities will always express themselves in some way. The "lightning" just looks like he was a porcelain doll that got cracked...for it to look like proper lightning it would need more of a realistic interpretation with shading & the light source being the lightning itself 😕
I definitely used tattoos to help me deal with everything in my life in my early 20's. While I do think I'll end up covering a few for better quality work, I don't regret any of them because they helped me a lot at the time and have made me more myself over the years. :) I knew I wanted to be a heavily tattooed person and that's still the case
Keep these coming girl! Youre looking *chefs kiss* as usual. Also, do you not do videos on reacting to subcriber tattoos anymore? I really liked that content and loved the anticipation of maybe seeing my submission.
My husband has a very bad tattoo on his side. He got it when he was young and it was cheap. It’s very large. Thankfully I met him with his shirt on. 😂 But seriously, if he thought it was a good tattoo then it probably would be a problem. But he is well aware how bad it is and now only gets good work done. He actually uses it as an example for kids to wait until you can afford a good tattoo.
I've also dealt with depression and anxiety and got a Harry Potter quote; "You care so much you feel as though you will bleed to death with the pain of it" and have pretty much made my left sleeve about suffering and the right about love, connecting them with my faith in Christ who inspires me to choose suffering if it means I can do something loving for somebody else, regardless of who they are or what they believe. God bless you all! ❤
I have some tattoos that have multiple meanings and I have had a pretty rough mental health journey, and they give me so much joy in a bittersweet kinda way
My tattoos are time stamps. I will never regret a single one. I spend plenty of time reworking designs and placement locations til I know what I want. Fastest turn around time of thinking of a tattoo through to getting it done has been 8 months. Slowest turnaround was between my first and second as I was just a college student when I got the first one so couldn’t afford a bunch of tattoos way back then. 8 tattoos over 21 years.
The lightening one looked really cool. If they added silver ink to it (does that exist?) and a bit of white to highlight, it would look more realistic, but the simple design itself is cool and something you don’t see too often. 👍
I've heard there's metallic inks just like UV ink exists, but I've yet to see it used anywhere. You could probably make it look metallic with the right shading though.
For the second vid.. it’s true Like my artists never post my tattoos or anyone my shade or darker on their pages.. so I mostly shot in the dark when I first went to them
@@Justaperson354 so you've had people force you to take a photo of your tattoos they've done on you? That's weird, when I got piercings and my piercer wanted to share it to her social media she asked.
@@Shyknit piercings and tattoos are completely different. When you get a tattoo they always take a picture for their portfolio so they can show off their work. People tend to need multiple examples before getting a tattoo by an artist. Piercings on the other hand you see a few online and think alright imma do it. Because you can easily take them out. Tattoos are more permanent and expensive to remove. All my tattoos have been photographed and either posted to their site or printed out for their portfolio in the studio. I’ve had some tattoos I’ve drawn up myself that are very personal and meaningful, but with those ones they didn’t want to post since they didn’t draw it out and it was personal for me. But I told them ahead of time that I didn’t want it posted or shown because I was worried someone would steal it since that’s happened to me before as some of my tattoos got big on Pinterest somehow. They agreed because we talked it out and I’ve gone to him for 15 years. But yeah they will take the picture. Piercings are way different especially when they’re on the face.
@@Justaperson354what?? I know many artists that wont post pics if the client asks, I think some of you are just afraid to talk to the tattoo artist or something.
I follow a few artists on instagram that feature darker skin tones in their portfolios...granted, it's still not very many usually. I can recall at least one or two artists offering discounted tattoos for bipoc as well. Unfortunately as you said there's a lot of racism in the tattoo industry, and like some people have commented, if you can't trust an artist to tattoo your skin tone, why would you risk going?
One of my ex bfs had bad tattoos... i was worried that it was a tattoo artist problem. But turns out, he just didnt take care of his tattoos after they were done. Like zero after care.
Women with tattoos are seen as easy. They're seen as less feminine, loose morals, kinky, they're seen as lesser women. Women with tattoos are approached more because they seem more likely to say yes? Yeah, that tracks. How many moderately to heavily tattooed/pierced women are asked if they have tattoos/piercings "anywhere else". Women with tattoos are fetishized and targeted. That's not new.
I have the words “lost cause” on my chest that I got at 18, and I’m 29 now. Everyone in my life, especially my mother would say that I would regret the tattoo and it’s so negative and it’s so dark, but recently, I’ve gotten a lot more positive tattoos on my arms - two of them being my kids birthdates on either wrist, and I’m going to continue getting more and more positive stuff, maybe some more of it will be negative lol like when I start my serial killer sleeve like Roly 😂 but that’s the best part about tattoos - is that they’re not for anyone else, there for you. When I look at my artwork, it reminds me of where I was in my life and whatever conversation since then and so on and so forth. They’re time stamps. It’s like time traveling when I look at my beautiful skin with his amazing artwork on it. keep getting tatted girls.💁🏽♂️
They were using a Slim Jim to do the pointing on the tic-tac-toe one. Sometimes I watch these videos and think the surreal feelings I get seeing what people do to themselves with tattoo machines must be what it's like to do recreational substances! 😂
I completely understand the getting tattoos and remembering what I was going through at the time of getting it....the year my daughter passed was rough so my coping mechanism was getting tattoos...in 6 months I had gotten 6 tsttoos...my husband ended up grounding me from getting more lol and got me a dog
I don't think it's directly "your trauma appearing on you" I think its an intense drive to define yourself, which often comes from trauma, but not necessarily
Ive gone on dates with people who had bad tattoos and it definitely gave me an ick 😭 it was never a dealbreaker though. At some point i just stop thinking it’s bad and accept it lol. It simply is.
I got a simple tattoo the other day and it was all normal, nothing new, but half of it got really red and irritated. Went to the walk in and they said it was either infected or really overworked. I messaged my artist and I'm sad that it doesn't come through on photos how horrible it looked but he at least said if it needs any touch ups after 6 months and it heals good he'll do it
The shop I go to, all the artists have bits dedicated to darker skin tones on their socials. I don’t understand what is so hard besides as you stated racism. They post them on their regular feed too
Wish i could see more dark skined tattoos as i am pale as it gets person i cant say much other than i bet theres some amazing ones out there . Hope all the stigmas on both sides bugger off so folks can enjoy some body art no matter who they are !
To say something about that person which has those mental health "dark themed" tattoos. I handle it with tattoos of something/someone who helped me got through it. I cant handle the memories of those bad days, but I can relate to it sm. ❤
Just about the tatoos and men thing, I think the heart of the matter is that most women with visible tatoos tend to be more liberal and thus more open to casual dating as opposed to whatever conservative women are doing. The catch with this is it is a) based on stereotypes and b) even if she does casually date it doesn't mean she wants to casually date your ugly arse. I'm gay though so all I can 100% confirm is that femme lesbians do love tatoos
15:02 yes it did 💀💀 but also, i was with a guy who had only one tattoo and it was so shitty but for some reason it was very endearing and didnt bother me!!
I appreciate you asking everyone if they're comfy and cozy before you begin, but I watch these at work so I always get a little jealous of the people who are lol
I'm at a start of a big tattoo project (front piece from under collarbone till over my groin), got my second session in last week, peeled off second skin last Sunday and the fact this lady is doing that without any water, without any clean up, straight out in nature. What the hell. Do people not want their tattoos to look nice long term or what?
As a black person with lots of tattoos, what that black guy said is SO TRUE. I take a chance every damn time. My best friend is a tattoo artist and I'm so happy when she posts the tattoos she's done on me. Not for myself but for all the other people out there with a similar skin tone as me.
If you don’t mind sharing - what’s your friend’s instagram? I’d love to check out her work ❤
Oh cool
People still believe the "myth" that tattoos won't show up on black skin and just in general where I live at least black people or anyone that isn't white goes to other people like them for services. Things are changing pretty quickly where I am but that's how it was for so long.
I’m light skin but still have issues finding a good empathetic artist in LA/Inland empire (so cal)
And I’m gay so most shops are honestly un-work-wit-able 🤦🏽♂️
maybe it's because im German and we have pretty harsh child labour laws - but kid tattooers make me uncomfortable because they are essentially being exploited for labour, and increasingly, for social media clout and consequently more money.

My local tattoo artists are both people of color ,They have tattooed so many different skin colors . It’s so good to see that. In the tattoo industry.
Do you mean “skinned”? And by “light skin”, do you mean a black person with light brown skin?
@@dearrationals Ah maybe, english is not my first language sorry i hope i didn't say anything that would come off as offensive
@ghoultooth OK that makes sense! The blowouts that is. Cuz even the black part looked crazy 🤣🤣
I feel from an artist perspective when it comes to posting pictures of tattoos done on darker skin they can tend to be harder to see/ not pop like on white skin so you're just naturally drawn to the ones with a lighter background. Like a pencil drawing on a white paper vs a brown piece of paper, humans naturally go for the thing that stand out more
Just a guess: are you from CT? 😂
Re: the study
I'm not an expert by any means, but here is my input as someone who is currently learning statistics:
This study had a sample size of 11! That is *tiny.*
Also, it is by no means a controlled study.
A really heavily tattooed person and someone with a heart on their wrist are two very different aesthetics.
v late response but it could also mean that they went from 1 guy approaching them, to 2. which is really not a statistically significant difference, but when you phrase it as 'they were twice as likely to be approached' it sure sounds like it is
@@cryptidcorvidyes, the same size is tiny. Also are you controlling for environment? Maybe the beach is place where this is likely to occurr etc.
This. I watched this as part of my break from studying for my upcoming statistics exam and this is a fun observation, not a serious study. Can't in good conscience draw any conclusions from it.
I think the tattoo study of women on the beach missed a key element-
It's easier to approach someone with a tattoo because they've given you something to strike up a conversation about.
Not cool.
Good thing they documented it so when CPS shows up at the door they know who allowed and encouraged this child.

@@faithhammond10 That’s really cool! And that’s so amazing that they carry such meaning.
I can't tell if you said can or can't
I did say can’t, but with what you said here makes a very good / valid point!! There really shouldn’t be any excuses ever!! Artists should want exclusivity in their portfolio and should think of ways to achieve that!!
For me the reason why people with tattoos are more "approachable" Is because tattoes are conversation starter, and you can compliment them without seen as a pervert
HOOOLY DAMN, those dragon and flower tattoos at 10:38 are INSANE. Instantly followed the artist on insta, all their work is absolutely gorgeous. New tattoo goals unlocked

It's such a wholesome view of it ❤
@@AtlasAdratica it really is.
same 😭 it almost made me cry because my memory is so so bad and it frustrates me, but just looking at a tattoo of mine takes me back to that time 🥹
I have definitely noticed that a lot more men approach me now that I am very visibly tattooed! I'm assuming it's because it gives them an easy excuse to initiate a conversation by complimenting my tattoos. I also think it's related to stereotypes about tattooed women being kinky or more willing to engage in casual sex or whatever, and the belief that the purpose of any kind of body modification is really to receive male attention
I absolutely hate it!
Nooooooooo!!!! What an asshole!!!!!!
It's how it's supposed to be taken off. It's mind blowing more people aren't aware!

Sorry for the long comment:
I heard that some tattoo artists don’t want to tattoo dark skinned individuals (I am dark skinned as well) because they either:
1. Simply don’t want to
2. Are afraid that they won’t be able to give them the result they are looking for, and don’t want to disappoint them (which is fair and personally, I respect that more). But I personally think it’s just because of the technique the artist uses, that may not be optimal for everyone’s skin type/tone…
I have recently begun asking “new” artists (if I reach out to another who is not my normal artist), if they tattoo on dark skin. I’m not mad tbh because that’s just how it can be sometimes…
Another thing I was told (by my own regular artist), was that some people don’t post pictures of the dark skinned people they tattoo simply because it can be difficult to capture the tattoo - taking in consideration lighting and vibrancy etc - specially because they don’t want to edit the image too much just to get a clearer image of the tattoo… some people just… don’t post tats on dark skin 😅
I have looked through some artists insta and indeed, A LOT of them don’t really have (many) photos of dark skinned individuals with their ink… 😅 but yeah..
WITH THAT SAID…
I do find is disgraceful that some artists turn down potential clients just because of their skin colour without a good reason and just because of their skin colour🙄 plus I have seen in some situations, that some artists who tattoo dark skinned individuals, edit their photos so much so they don’t look dark skinned 🙄
It’s sad and disgusting.

the one about tattoos and mental health is so real. ive been in therapy for 4 or 5 years with AN and body dysmorphia but getting tattoos has helped me massively and i can actually leave the house in a t shirt now for the first time in around 10 years
I'm a licensed tattooer, a few years ago I helped my nephew who was 9 at the time tattoo a little skull on my leg. the difference between that and that video is I'm not exploiting him, we took photos for our family photo books.
I’ll never forget the tattoo of Wednesday Addams that looked exactly like Samuel Jackson. 😂😂😂 I died laughing!
Are you cozy? Me on the treadmill sweating my ass off😂

LOL
Watching this a day later, but currently on the treadmill! 😂
Agreed, so weird! He's like "this is not tattoo hate" - no bro, it's misogyny!
@@sewing_hobbit I was honestly waiting to hear about how men are perceived but I guess people only care to judge women so yeah, def mysogyny

Woooooooooow!!!! The audacity!!!
I have some tattoos that have multiple meanings and I have had a pretty rough mental health journey, and they give me so much joy in a bittersweet kinda way
Came to say that i also love these series. One of my favorite tattoo channels !
Sitting by me heater with a blanket over my legs, watching your videos preparing for little old ladyhood! Love it! ❤
Dang, it's still 80° where I'm at! Just thinking about a blanket and heater is making me sweat! 😂
Watching this a few days before my first tattoo!!
When I was 10 I started giving my father intramuscular injections, so as long as a child knows what they are doing and is under control…
For the second vid.. it’s true
Like my artists never post my tattoos or anyone my shade or darker on their pages.. so I mostly shot in the dark when I first went to them
It's weird to me that tattoo artists don't have digital portfolios with all their clients!
Maybe not all their clients want photos taken and shared
@@Shyknityou don’t get a choice most of the time
@@Justaperson354 so you've had people force you to take a photo of your tattoos they've done on you?
LAUREN UR HAIR IS SLAYING
I follow a few artists on instagram that feature darker skin tones in their portfolios...granted, it's still not very many usually. I can recall at least one or two artists offering discounted tattoos for bipoc as well. Unfortunately as you said there's a lot of racism in the tattoo industry, and like some people have commented, if you can't trust an artist to tattoo your skin tone, why would you risk going?
Lauren, you’re looking beautiful as always. Love your sweater (jumper)! I really like your style. ❤
Thank you so much 🥹🫶🏻
Getting my first tattoo tomorrow!! Ive been watching your content for so long now and im so excited :)
My kitties Remi and Gizmo say hi!!! We can’t wait to watch!
Awwwwww!!!! Give them a lil pat from me 🥹🫶🏻
@@treacletatts I will!!! We are in Pennsylvania in the states. They love sitting on my lap watching your videos. It’s really calming ❤️
One of my ex bfs had bad tattoos... i was worried that it was a tattoo artist problem. But turns out, he just didnt take care of his tattoos after they were done. Like zero after care.
I had a visible tattoo for 3 years and AM STILL WAITING FOR THE MEN TO BE ALL OVER ME. HALLO? ANYONE? PLS.....
Lauren, I share your sentiments about the tattoos being scarier than a horror film. 😂
Started my rib piece today! A branch of cherry blossoms on each rib. Hurt less than I expected
Sounds lovely 😍
They were using a Slim Jim to do the pointing on the tic-tac-toe one.
Sometimes I watch these videos and think the surreal feelings I get seeing what people do to themselves with tattoo machines must be what it's like to do recreational substances! 😂
That's Ross Smith and his granny. I love them. They are so hilarious! They do crazy stuff on Facebook watch. She is in her 90s!
I completely understand the getting tattoos and remembering what I was going through at the time of getting it....the year my daughter passed was rough so my coping mechanism was getting tattoos...in 6 months I had gotten 6 tsttoos...my husband ended up grounding me from getting more lol and got me a dog
I had my first laswr removal session this Saturdays. And HOLY COW that hurts so much! I cannot wait for the next sessions (cries in pain)
Ouchies!!!!
The sight of the large mag tattoo machine filling up with ink did things to me! 🤭
Marka’s art is absolutely gorgeous!! ❤❤❤❤ Yes!!
I don't think it's directly "your trauma appearing on you" I think its an intense drive to define yourself, which often comes from trauma, but not necessarily
I've been watching a lot of your videos lately so I guess I should subscribe 😊
Ive gone on dates with people who had bad tattoos and it definitely gave me an ick 😭 it was never a dealbreaker though. At some point i just stop thinking it’s bad and accept it lol. It simply is.
Lauren, you gotta clip the I feel great lady for future use. I love her! ❤❤😂 Awesome.
Ohh perfect timing!
I absolutely adore this top on you ♡
I was one of the people who tagged you in the Brittany broski one. I knew you’d appreciate that 😂😂
I just love your videos ❤❤❤❤
i like to think that tattoos are an easy way to start a conversation
Oh noooo that finger blackout looks like gangrenous frostbitten fingers 🥴😂
Tattoos are the scars we choose ❤
Oh my gosh I've never been this early!! Gotta go grab my snack and beverage
Omg! I'm so excited just got back from getting new tattoos
My friend has the most beautiful tattoo I’ve ever seen…it’s a huge dragon clinging to her back…with its tail wrap around her leg. 🐉
I got a simple tattoo the other day and it was all normal, nothing new, but half of it got really red and irritated. Went to the walk in and they said it was either infected or really overworked. I messaged my artist and I'm sad that it doesn't come through on photos how horrible it looked but he at least said if it needs any touch ups after 6 months and it heals good he'll do it
these are my favorite of your videos
The shop I go to, all the artists have bits dedicated to darker skin tones on their socials. I don’t understand what is so hard besides as you stated racism. They post them on their regular feed too
I’ve never been this early🤩 perfect timing for before bed watching🥰
17:48 OMG im dying! "it looks like a peanut" 😂😂
All comfy and cosy and ready to watch
those red flowers around 10:43 like DAYUM
Wish i could see more dark skined tattoos as i am pale as it gets person i cant say much other than i bet theres some amazing ones out there . Hope all the stigmas on both sides bugger off so folks can enjoy some body art no matter who they are !
you're looking stunning x i loved the video
Some bad tattoos really can be kind of cool!
Currently binging this series while I wait for my artist to open her books because I need my tattoo fix somehow.
