I picture an empty metropolis, not a single soul, left exactly as it was in the 1940s, without a single piece of dust or a crack in the concrete, the Ford coupes sitting in the street untouched. Towering Art Deco skyscrapers loom over, as this song emanates from an unknown place, like a speaker in the heavens. It's a haunting but beautiful scene.
This also reminds me of the sleepovers I had when I was a kid at my grandma's house. She watched country shows at night, and would often fall asleep to them. I woke up around midnight and heard a voice echoing throughout the home. I walked into the family room, the only light being the TV. In the light I could see my grandparents fast asleep on their chairs. The TV played a mournful song sung by a long-dead country star, on a 70s stage to an empty audience. The speakers seemed to have lost their clarity and the song dragged on in long reverberations. The only other thing I could see was the moon and stars through their ginormous picture window, beaming down onto this sleepy place. I returned to my bed down the hall, after making sure to turn off the TV. Now the song played in my mind, and was my lullaby that deep night.

Sometimes I wonder why I spend
A lonely night dreaming of a song
    The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
    When our love was new
    And each kiss an inspiration
    But that was long ago
Now my consolation is in the stardust of a song
    Beside a garden wall
    When stars are bright
    You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
    Of paradise where roses grew
    Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
    My stardust melody
    The memory of love's refrain

    "Stardust"
And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by
Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely night dreaming of a song
    The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
    When our love was new

The first (shellac, 78rpm) record my grandpa gave me was the Tommy Dorsey and Frank Sinatra version of Stardust.
I listened to it bright-eyed and eagle-eared, through the surface noise and hum of the old tube amp in the 'classroom' record player, enjoying every second of it. A genuine connection between his generation and mine. We both loved making things, antiques, records, music... all kinds of things like that; passions he helped instill in my heart.
He passed recently. The last few times I saw him he couldn't even form a coherent sentence. He could barely hold a glass to take a drink. The last words he said to me, specifically, were "I missed my ride." We had been working on his (now my) 1964 Ford with the main goal of taking him for one last ride, and indeed we weren't able to finish the project in time. He was saying it as a joke, with a smile, but... it still cuts me to think of it. I'm grateful I was at least able to get the car running for him though, so there's that consolation.
Anyway... Hearing this take of this song, so distant sounding, coupled with the memories and thoughts and experiences I've had recently... just hits me in a way that no other song has yet.

This picture EXACTLY describes this song wth. I can picture myself walking in snow while listening to this song. It's kind of like that feeling when winter comes and it starts getting colder. It's closer to Christmas and you're thinking about the new year.

This is so weird, for a pretty personal reason. Ages ago before I discovered the Caretaker heard Turner Layton’s cover of this song, a piano solo recorded in 1936. An old family member of mine was a fan of Turner back in the day and at a gathering played some his recordings, most of which were vocal obviously. Anyway at that time (I was around 13) I was really into romantic era piano music, Chopin, Liszt, Rubinstein etc, and I really wasn’t into the popular music my friends and peers listened to at the time, also my parents weren’t really into popular music so I wasn’t exposed to too many genres. Back to this record, me and two of my cousins were in the reception room of my great grandmothers house (she lived in the country in a very old house she had inherited from an ancestor years before, it was very old house, no internet, rudimentary central heating she refused to turn on, she was born in 1912 and “didn’t believe” in central heating) we sat as she played her records on her ancient gramophone, a lot of it classical, Dance Band, and Turner Layton, then Turner Layton’s cover of this song came on, for whatever reason it captivated me, at once attempting to reproduce it on the piano (I didn’t read sheets at that time and would primarily play by ear) working at it for however long until I got bored, after returning home I purchased a CD of Turner Layton’s music which included the same record (although for some reason digitised a semitone too low) which I still have to this day. Whenever I hear this song, or a cover of it I am immediately transported back, recalling lots of happy memories, ironic. A couple years later I discovered The Caretaker through the music of Turner Layton.

this song makes me feel like im at the very, very end of time. the stars have dimmed to a faint glow, and the universe is dark and bare. but the stars are singing, using up the last of their heat and energy. and the whole universe is echoing, the voices ringing through. i just float there, mesmerized. the song ends, and the stars die out, one by one. i am left in the vaccum of space, nowhere, yet everywhere. i am everywhere at the end of time.

    Stardust Lyrics:
    *V.1*
Sometimes I wonder why I spend
A lonely night dreaming of a song
    The melody haunts my reverie
And once again I am with you
    When our love was new
    And each kiss an inspiration
Ah, but that was long ago
Now my consolation is in the stardust of a song
    *V.2*
    Beside a garden wall
    When stars are bright
    You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
    Of paradise where roses grew
    Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
    My stardust melody
    The memory of love's refrain

    "not too much artistry here"
Due to the inability to reply to old comments on the new youtube, I shall put it out there that the artistry is strong here, but it is conceptual. It's not Dada music, but think the Duchamp Fountain sort of thing, for a rather vulgar comparison.
