In the 80s listening to New Order, The Cure, The Smiths, REM - and 10,000 Maniacs was right up there too for me. What a great youtube find to listen to this cover. Thanks!
@AsherSmasher1985 JD was a big influence early in our career. As were The Clash, Gang of Four, Fairport Convention, Gram Parsons, The Cure.... the list is long. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Peter. We released our first album of new material last year. Music From The Motion Picture is available on iTunes and there are some physical copies around. We are currently working on an album of traditional folk songs from the UK, Twice told Tales can be pre-ordered www. pledgemusic. com/projects/twicetoldtales
@10KMTV Wow, just loved to hear these amazing news...looking forward to see ya guys in 2011, and in the meantime, I´ll be around lookin for some news here at your channel, thanks tons for sharing...cheers...
Many great artists have covered this most exceptional song and miserably failed. This one is not one of them. I wasn't expecting such a fantastic cover. All around superb and excellent performance.
Thanks, Rocky. We love JD and New Order. We don't often play this song live, though we sometimes play it at our annual Valentine's Day shows in Chicago at City Winery. Mostly to confuse the audience.
@hautelick Thanks. We are all big fans of Joy Division and New Order. Along with Guns on the Roof, this was one of the first covers we learned back in 1981. We seldom put much thought or effort into rehearsing covers, and that's not because we don't respect the songs. We learn them and start playing them. We want our versions to be a natural expression of how the songs affect us. We hadn't played this song in 25 years.
An album of classics à la 10000 maniacs would be fantastic. I love the Cure cover you made. By the way, many people outside de US would love to have you in concerts. Your music is universal. Greetings from Peru.
You guys are so damn tight live. This is like a song they didn't include on the MTV unplugged album for whatever reason. I mean it fits right in seamlessly. Thanks for all the beautiful music over the years. The 80s and more so the 90s teemed with great pop music. Not so much now, or at least its A LOT harder to find. Trans-Atlantic sessions keeps me going along with the likes of Sarah Jarosz and Alison Krauss but its so few and far in between but try finding those two or anything remotely close on your local radio station.... Its quite sad actually. Thank you!
@joske2k Joske, our new web page is up and running maniacs.com. You can follow us on facebook as well. We have plans to visit South America (Brazil) next year. Hope to see you then.
Well I'm a male in Manchester who was around here for the original and quite like this...missing Hooky's bass a bit and obviously lacking the emotional impact but it's not trying for those I think...
Thanks, Andy. We all are big fans of JD and played this often in our early years. We still play it on occasion, recently at a show on Valentine's Day. Hooky's bass part is there, but got lost in the mix a bit. Wish I had been in Manchester to witness the real thing. ~ Steven
I sort of liked Natalie Merchant except that she ALWAYS sounded like she had marbles in her mouth. I really dig this other singer. I confess that when I heard Natalie Merchant had left 10,000 Maniacs, I just assumed the band would break up. Shows you what I know! I am loving this. I saw 10,000 Maniacs in D.C. about a hundred years ago. LOL. I remember when Natalie sang that song about the abused kid? People were dancing to that! I was horrified that people were dancing along to a song about child abuse. Sure, it was catchy, but still...
Thanks for the reply. The irony of people dancing to a serious subject. We're not really maniacal either. You can't judge a book by its cover and sometimes you can't help but dance. There's nothing wrong with dancing, but it sure is wrong to abuse children. We're still touring and enjoying the celebration of a live performance. Come see us. www.maniacs.com click on tour dates. 10,000 Thanks!
awful...sorry - this about male, manchester angst. it has nothing to do with US college-rock from simpering women. it is uniquely english and doesn't translate. it is like kenneth williams singing springsteen.
@@10KMTVI did have an old VHS recording of Natalie in concert around 38 years ago, this was one of the songs on the tape. Sadly I lost it. I’ve not heard Natalie’s version since.
Best cover version of this song i've ever heard
Wow. We love JD and just enjoy playing this song.
oh yes it is!
Yes!
10,000 Thanks. This was the first time we played this song in 25 years. It was one of the first covers we learned when the band started in 1981.

Excellent version of a great song, thank you 10KMTV.

Absolutely brilliant mate
Thank you so much for saying that! JD, New Order, Gang of Four and the like were big influences on us.

Great rendition of the Joy Division classic. Bravo!
Gee thanks. We are not worthy but we like playing this song.

@joske2k We had a great time recording this show. We are writing new songs and will be on the road next summer 2011. Thanks for watching.
Thanks For Sharing

They also do a great cover of Morrisey's "Everyday is Like Sunday" in studio (with Natalie)
Gotta love Mary...

@10kmtv I love your cover songs an especially of British bands. You truly have a lovely harmonious voice especially along with the violin.
i agree truly a good work including Maria Sebastian
@smalleststep Our pleasure.

Thank you, Luis. We made it to Argentina and Brazil in 2017 and know we have listeners in Peru. Maybe in 2018!
Well done

Aren't you nice. We've been working hard and started using In Ear Monitors after this was recorded. We're better musicians for it.
Great
Love this rendition of my favorite Joy Division song. It's the same story, told from the woman's POV.
@Joelgaieski We are honored.
This is wonderful. Ian Curtis is dancing in his grave 😆
One can hope.
cool
@hastadecirpalabra This was one of the first covers we learned with Natalie.
@TUBLERONE62 Thanks.
You are welcome. It is our pleasure.
Love Joy Division got the T shirt of this....this is a great cover....
There are two great covers of this song. Swans version is beautiful, and so is this one.
@alexbernstein They both speak fondly of you.

@zee339 Huh?
Pretty tight
We should be. We've been strumming these damn songs for nearly 40 years!
@@10KMTV Who is we???
Who's the bass player?
Is this a test? Joy Division had Peter Hook. 10KM has Steven Gustafson.
Didn't think anyone had any business covering this song. I was wrong.
K.
this reminds me of an ancient 7" bootleg
one hater stuck their thumb in it!
I miss Natalie Merchants lovely voice..

Blasphemy!
Tough shit.
Not a blasphemy but un elegy.
Oh yeah, I forgot Natalie Merchant left the bad.
27 years ago. Mary has been working with us since 1992.
awful...sorry - this about male, manchester angst. it has nothing to do with US college-rock from simpering women. it is uniquely english and doesn't translate. it is like kenneth williams singing springsteen.
Natalie’s version was better
Natalie really understood the sadness of the song and she was only 18 years old at the time.

truly awful
Thanks, Mike, from the heart of our bottoms.
