This receiver was my first foray into vintage audio! I’ve yet to get into it, so this video is perfect timing for me.
    Thanks Trev

Good example of doing what is needed, not going over the top for a simple low power receiver.

Great looks on the 440. I've had the 770 and although "only" 18 wpc, there are few receivers that sound as nice as the early cap-coupled Pioneers. (IMO.)
    I sold it because I have the 1971 72 wpc cap-coupled SX-2500, so I couldn't justify keeping the 770. I wish I would've.

Nice job on that lamp holder base. Problem solver in action. I have NO IDEA why people buy the LED replacements for their receivers when the incandescent ones are still available.

The wood veneer could be saved. Light sand, oaxalic acid, stain and just like new. 👍 not much going on inside that one. You should add a card inside the cover describing the changes you make so the next guy has a fighting chance. 10K Trev. Good on you.

I so wish you were available to work on my old Pioneer. You're a functioning genius Trevor!

Non ventilated cases keep everything really clean inside and protects the pots and switches from getting scratchy too !
There are a few things that could have been improved like the power lead and the lighting hotspots but I suppose it's all down to what the customer wants really. Also there is a limit to how much work you can put into something like this old receiver based on value.

About the LED's : A better choise would be straw-hat LED's. they have a ca. 130 degrees even light dispersion. Ideal for replacing tuning-scale lamps. It's a bit more effort to mount them because they're single LED's and need some rectification ( a cap) and current-limiting.

Being low power isn't necessarily bad. Several low power receivers in fact sounds better than those further up in line. Like Akal AA-1020 vs. 1035 being just one example.
    Great video as always Mate.
    Thanks.

Another great repair/mod video Trevor! I'm amazed at how you not only repair the customers equipment but usually improve on the manufacturers build! You seem to be able to customize anything. I wish you were in my area (Maine) as I'd love to have you as a resource. Hate shipping my expensive vintage gear in the mail though. Look forward to every video you post! Love the vintage gear.

I'm not sold on the replacement LEDs for the most part for the same reasons you quote. The AC/DC issue, the point source, the colour of the light... I'd much rather have new incandescents myself.

I have little knowledge of electronics, but know an expert when I see one. Especially one who cuts very few corners.
My area repair shop says there's no money in doing a thorough restoration. They cleaned a relay, changed bulbs and polished the wood case. I was back in myself cleaning pots and soldering a broken connection. And I'm still without a proper restoration like the ones Trevor does. Ring a bell, anyone?

Great restore as always Trevor, and very creative ‘out of the box’ fixes on the lamp holder and speaker terminals. Your creativity and solutions for these types of issues is always impressive. One note - not sure if this series Pioneer uses 2SC458 transistors sprinkled throughout? but many receivers from this same vintage/era do, and if so, they should all be replaced as they are known to be very problematic.

maybe you can wrap the LEDs in velum paper for diffusing the light

Looks like 1972 from that stamp. Sure stayed clean in that sealed box. No objection to speaker connector change-out, anything is better than that outdated technology..Hmmmmmmmm, why not flip speaker connector 180 deg., never mind same chassis problem. Needs a piece of vellum for light spectrum, never ever seen threaded LED. Those early 1970 MHz indicator lights are a nightmare, went thru same hell with Accuphase T101. Canada still has many FM Stations, no amigo stations like here in the States.

48:05 Why not just remove the fuses and measure the current there?
Adjust for 40mA across each of the fuse terminals, and your good.
Btw, adjusting the "centerpoint", isn't that actually the symetrical clipping?
