I love that you did this video! I have a washer and dryer like that also and I struggle with it. My next set with be a more basic set, easier to use.

Hello David, wow, you have been in my thoughts as this pandemic continues to slow everything down, including guide dog instruction. I know that you have a bit more vision than I have so you can potentially use more of the functions on a washer like this but I am so frustrated that this highly rated consumer report washer is not accessible for the blind. Jerry is connecting the new washer right now and I research The consumer reports and ratings to find the best possible, manually operated control panel, and yes, it is less than half of the price of my current washer and doesn’t get the high ratings but I can work the control panel without vision. The new washer also has an agitator which is OK but my high efficiency fancy washer was huge and could do my king-size comforters, blankets and quilts with no problem. I just feel left behind when it comes to household appliances just thought I would share my personal struggles with this issue as a blind consumer and from the comments, it is apparent that I am not the only one struggling. Great to hear from you and we shall keep in touch. Love, Beverly

I would think that they could easily put a speaking module in the machine to read what is on the screen. I would certainly pay a little extra for that if need be. Wouldn’t you, Beverly?

Yes Kim. I would definitely pay a little extra if the control panel had any speaking capabilities. I have seen a demonstration of an attachment, by Sam at his channel the blind life. I investigated the box that he showed on his video and it only is compatible to a washer that gets poor ratings in consumer reports. The box that talks is not expensive but if it only pairs with a machine that isn’t rated well to wash clothing, then it’s what again, useless. This is one of my real life pet peeves. I would like the high end appliances in my home and I find that most are not accessible if you are blind. Thanks for watching and stay safe! Love, Beverly

Omigoodness my battery has run out of juice three times before I could hit send on the firewire, grins! I'm still very frustrated and washing all my clothes and sheets and even my great grandma's quilt in the kitchen sink and drying everything in the tub on an extra shower curtain rod going more directly over the center of the tub and one shower chair with a back, and a plastic garden chair I bought just for that purpose. My apartment complex made all our laundry room washers and dryers inaccessible at the paypoints in 2016. The same ones that had quarter slots for many years and the rest of the buttons were all accessible and simple on. I could have done it even If I couldn't hear. I've been on them about it since it happened. They knew this to begin with, under the FHA, and ADA, to keep things accessible with any renovations or make them even more accessible but they went backwards in more than just that way! They say they will retrofit some back to quarters but still
have not and claim corporate never returns their calls, about it. What I'm talking about here isn't even the half of the story. The law is on my side, but you have to have people that will enforce it, and good luck with that here. Things that weren't broken before are things that they as management look for ways too break and make more difficult. Corporate Group Apartment management is a monopoly to and are destroying apartment complexes like the way mall renovation and double indemnity schemes have destroyed malls. They just ran out of malls and moved the government reno grants and and insurance cups and balls scheme to apartments underneath thousands of nesting LLC's.

Oh my goodness Audrey! I am aware of most of the aspects of this comment including the mall and LLC shell games that have completely changed real estate and management I could probably do a 30 minute rant on that particular topic because it has impacted my city in a very profound way. But, back to the washing machine issue. Have you filed a department of justice complaint? It is absolutely ludicrous that you must hand wash all of your clothing when other residents have the luxury of using inaccessible washers and dryer‘s. It seems that going through your corporate channels has not worked. And they are either ignoring the issue or just kicking the can down the proverbial road. This also happened to me at the municipal level and our city sidewalks. Everyone wanted to blame everyone else for inaccessible sidewalks. So I just got online and pulled down a department of justice complaint form filled it out signed it and sent it. Within two weeks and inspector was here in my town and The mayor, the city Council president, the city attorney and the city planner were told what they must do to comply with the ADA. I would be interested to know if you have filed a formal DOJ complaint and if you have a thought, would you consider just jumping over the local and corporate housing authorities and start at the top down. Maybe that is a strategy that you might consider. Either way, please let me know what you think about this type of strategy. This is so unfair and totally illegal. Thank you so much for sharing your perspective and try to stay safe and healthy. Love, Beverly

Yes Beverly that can be very frustrating. However, I came across this talking module that you can plug it into any GE washer or dryer. Here is the link.

I love this dialogue. Yes, I found the external talking box that was created to hook into the GE washer or dryer. My current fancy machines are not GE so I could not purchase the box so they would be able to speak. So I went to the talking box website, they are temporarily not shipping the box, maybe due to Covid, not sure but the box is compatible with a few GE models. So I eagerly went to the consumer report data to review the specific models that the box will pair up with. The specific GE models are the lower end and got very poor reviews. So it further frustrated my dilemma in that, I should not be forced into buying a poorly rated washer because I cannot see an LED light and menu on the high end washer that has outstanding reviews. That is the point that I am at attempting to make. If you cannot see the display, you are forced into buying a bottom tier, poorly rated machine just to work the Control panel.

@@bamablind9916 very frustrating I bet! You would think since they have cooking thermometers that are smartphone accessible. That they would create are high-end washing machine could do the same. The technology is there to make it happen.

Yes, you are right again. They do have high end washing machines that pair with iPhones but the functions are very limited. It only reports that your washer is running in a certain cycle and how many minutes it has until it is completed. You know that they have the ability to access much more information than that,. It just hasn’t gotten to the mass market yet. I will just continue to patiently wait and use my cheap, new washer. LOL have a great night!
