1998 wasn't the year and he was aging...pre 1998 they didn't have pro's at the olympics unfortunately would've been cool to see. World Juniors 78 I think they were runners up?
The 1980 Islanders team was about the same as the 1984 team but it's a toss up at least in the playoffs who was better between the 1982 or 1983 team🤔 cause those were the 2 best Islander teams in the playoffs
Pardon my ignorance, but how did the Flyers and Islanders end up playing each other in the finals? Was there a different playoff bracket system back then?
It does seem odd that two local rivals would be squaring off for the Cup but, yes, the playoff format was different. 16 of the 21 teams qualified with the top seed playing the last seed and so on and each round got reseeded with the top team consistently facing the lowest until ultimately the Flyers and the Islanders were the last teams standing.
Teams were ranked 1-16 for the playoffs, there was no conference or divisional format for the playoffs at the time. It's OK to ask, it's not the 1st time somebody has asked about this, it's all good.
@@ckendall67 Anything that has to do with hockey is good. I grew up in the "basketball town" of Syracuse NY, in a "basketball family", as my Uncle Bob was drafted into the NBA in the 1970s. It's a miracle I came to love hockey so much. Never had so much fun playing a sport as I did between the pipes in college gym class and intramurals!
Loved the 1 vs 16 format... some great, and unusual match-ups.
This was well put together. Very enjoyable.
I remember that goal by Nystrom, being a Flyer fan it was like “Oh no!”
May 23, 1980: my first kiss, from my first crush. May 24, 1980: my beloved Islanders won the Cup. Not bad for a thirteen year-old!
Flyers weren't really the Bullies anymore at that point, but with guys like Paul Holmgren, Behn Wilson, etc. still had a pretty pugnacious team.
27:30 CBS Fox Video fanfare, albeit a different pitch.
In game four, after the Flyers made it a one-point game, there was this little kid on his father's lap shouting, "What the fck!"
It's a shame Wayne Gretzky never got to play for a gold medal winning Canadian team.

@@joetolstoy3573 The 1 thru 16 system was a lot of fun for the fans, but was impractical from the point of view of travel time and expense.
