How cool and what a bumber... I really wanted to go into the whale mine.
I used to work for the NDOM (Nevada division of mines in their abandoned mine lands project. where I would go out and classifi abandoned mines. the scale was from 1-4 1: being not a big deal people may go look at it or not... and a number was added if animals were sited (ie: if the mine is a 1 and you see a bat then it becomes a 2) and 4: being everyone can get there everyone can see it and will most likely die is they go near or in it... most of the time we would put up signs and posts showing there is a hole don't fall in... be careful you take your own life at risk... gates are put up usually only when a mine is heavily trafficked, very close to a large town and can be seen by all, and there are animals present in the mine... then I'd feel it was warranted at all to put up a gate at the whale mine.

It's amazing to think about the amount of effort and skill it took to build this facility. The Model T came out in 1908, WW1 ended in 1918 and Nevada was still the west, no electricity in rural areas, no paved roads and lawless.

    FYI..
Some, not all, mine explorers will break the law and cut a bar to access the mine. It is cut in such a way that it looks solid. After the exploration it returned to its original place.
    Thanks, for trying E!

Nice old mine site. History is always fun to learn about. There are some cool old mines on the northeast side of Crossman Peak East of Havasu City.
There are club claims(Havasu Gold Seekers)there.

Thanks for the up close and personal tour of the topography, felt like i was hiking right by your side. Your knowledge of mining and minerals is entertaining and educational. Hope your leg continues to heal!

Elley, Dan is right on. Take gentle care of that foot/ankle. I had Achilles surgery 6 weeks ago and I 100% do NOT recommend doing anything to injure it. I didn't actually rupture or tear mine, but could have. Mine was surgically cut. I had a nasty bone spur that's bothered me for years but it recently began growing out of control and formed a hook, which hooked into my tendon and began calcifying the tendon, then breaking off and growing back. In the surgeon's words, it was "monster" that was "shredding" my tendon. Yes, it hurt. And yet, I was still hiking all over the Mojave like a genius. I ended up with a donor tendon grafted on after he cut my heel back (Haglund's deformity).
All that to remind you to take care of that foot. It's so easy to take it for granted. and the tiniest of slips could tear that tendon and you'll be off your feet for months, even a year. My surgeon said it will probably be a good year before I can reliably hike like normal. :(

Just curious if the canyon bed dump material would have had residual cyanide or mercury in it? I have found processing sites from silver mines with what looks almost like melted multi-color slag rock adjacent to float tanks.

could be, I don't check that out.. most of the time sites like this would send off there concentrate to a smelter and I didn't see signs of a smelter here. so I imagine it was not too far away.

It’s really sad that it wasn’t able to escape people coming out and ruining the site with graffiti. The defacement is absolutely ridiculous and it should be a made a very very serious crime to such things. It makes areas look very trashy.
