  • Quick overview of upgrading the stock radio and speakers. Covers location of key items and disassembly.
    Notes: All four doors come apart the same, two screws and lots of panel pins. Used twisted wire for speaker leads. Filter cap installed inline with power to reduce car noise, and create better bass from radio. USed double sided tape on back of speaker mounts to help dampen vibrations and boost efficiency of speaker contact to door.

    Bought a 2005 Pontiac Vibe cheap. Major problem was a parasitic amp draw; one was the dome light switch (easy fix), the other was the audio system. Eliminated the radio as the cause but, due to your video, I was able to locate the amplifier, which was the cause of the short (plus no front bass speakers). Thanks so much, bought a used one on Ebay and saved hundreds of $$$ doing it myself!

      1slogar I have a question, was your bass only out in the front speakers? I lost my bass in all speakers a little while ago so I’m going to buy new speakers, could the amp be the problem?

    I bought the radio from Crutchfied, they included an adapter harness for the radio. Due to what I did, I modified the harness and other items during the upgrade

  • @lustderf
    @lustderf  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The adapter converted the GM radio wire harness to a standard aftermarket head unit plug. Example, GM may have a 24 wire plug going into the radio, while the aftermarket radio may have a 16 wire plug, the adapter matched up the needed wires. Same for the door speakers, GM used a plug type that did not attach directly to the new speakers, the adapter corrected this. Sometimes directions may have you cut off the GM connectors and attach the wires directly to the device.

    I have a Pontiac vibe 2006 and I have install a new radio and 4 new speakers ... they work fine for a while but after 3-4 months my front right and left rear speaker stop working at the same time ... I need help (it's not the connection behind the radio and the connection to the speakers is ok
    Thanks you

    I would have liked to have seen how you went about removing the rivets and securing the new speaker mounts... Everything else I sort of knew.

    • @lustderf
      @lustderf  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used an 3/16" drill bit to remove the center pin from the rivet, pushing lightly on the drill to prevent spinning the rivet. Some of the rivets started to spin, used a screwdriver between the door and OEM mount to bind the rivet keeping the rivet from spinning with the drill bit. Thanks for the feedback, will try to show more disassembly in future videos.

    apologies if this seems like a dumb question here. we just got an 06 Vibe and were in the process of swapping out the new deck, i couldn't get sound to the speakers. does this have to do with the 2nd plug in on the stock stereo? i'm a bit lost on what exactly that is, have a couple ideas, but unsure.

    Why are you using a 100k uF cap? I'm curious about how you came to that exact figure. What's the idea behind it?

    Is it necessary to use the speaker adapters or can you just put after market speakers in without the adapter?

    Great video! I am looking to upgrade the head unit on my Vibe, and was wondering If you encountered any problems connecting the factory subwoofer to your new receiver. Should I be prepared to sever/solder some connections? Do I need a receiver with pre-amp sub outputs for the stock setup? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @lustderf
      @lustderf  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The factory subwoofer is powered by the Vibes audio amp under the front passenger seat. The amp takes the head units Driver Rear and Passenger Rear audio channels, filters the signal, amplifies and send the signal to the dual channel woofer located in the passenger rear hatch. Since you have a factory subwoofer, you need to adapt the head units speaker leads to low level audio to feed the Vibes built in amplifier. This link shows one brand of adapter:

    Their is a surprising amount of room under the seat. I see no issue with reusing the bracket. I would check two things, have someone sit on the seat to make sure with occupant their is enough clearance for the amp. Route wires to the side, to keep rear seat passengers from sticking their feed into the wiring.

      Once removed their is a lot of room behind the radio, dash is very open. Just took a cable tie and secured them to a plastic support, to keep them from falling down.

    I have an 04 Vibe with the same amp under the passenger seat.
    Any thoughts on reusing the existing bracket when installing a new amp? I'm looking to get an Alpine that measures 10"x10"x2". Obviously there is going to be some level of modification needed, just curious what you think.

    Amazing video! Should help me out a lot!
    -a couple questions tho, i have 03 vibe gt with amp and tweeters,
    -my speakers are sounding distorted when I turn them up which makes me think they're blown, I was going to go with the Polk dxi651 but according to genvibe the speakers have to be shallow mount, were these shallow mount?
    -Also yours are component so do I have to get component and does the vibe already have crossovers in it, if I understood correctly best buy was telling me that if the tweeters are not connected to the speakers directly then there is likely a cross over somewhere..
    -to temp fix the distortion and to attempt to figure out if all speakers were bad or just some I played with the deck and adjusted fade from speaker to speaker and adjusted bass, mids and lows. With bass turned down, mids no higher than halfway, which is at 0, and treble turned all the way up at +8 the distortion seems to go away as long as I don't turn up the music past about 4/5 of the way, somebody suggested that because the distortion goes away at least at this point that maybe the speakers are fine and the amp actually might be the problem, so how would I be able to tell if it's my speakers or the amp, or both? Or if there are cross overs somewhere could it be that maybe just those need to be replaced?
    Thanks so much for your time, this will help out so much!

      Also, you mentioned that there was a potential issue with the speaker well having water running through it, presumably putting the speakers at risk, I noticed the Polk speakers you got had "marine certified" on the box, is it safe to assume that means they are waterproof? I mean that would seem like common sense but I'd rather know for sure than assume and attempt to rely on common sense alone and throw away $200, but if they are waterproof then that obviously seems to solve the problem of water running through the inside of the door

    • @lustderf
      @lustderf  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      KingTen91 Most car doors have some water that runs through them, the molding around the window gets most of the water, the rest runs inside the door. I got the marine speakers because they were on sale, plus excellent weather characteristics. A good poly based speaker will have better weather handling than the stock paper speakers. This link shows some of the water issues: forums.genvibe.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=40945&hilit=+water+door

    • @lustderf
      @lustderf  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may have one or more speakers with an issue, the stock speakers are paper. 2.5" mounting depth still worked, did not try anything deeper. Crossover is built into the tweeter, the OEM amp has some filtering. Your speaker by speaker test, only used highs which mostly tested the tweeters, if you have a blown woofer it will show up in lower frequencies. If you are using the stock radio this test should work, if you have an aftermarket radio installed you may have other settings DSP, loudness, bass boost etc working against you. If you installed an aftermarket radio did you install a converter between the radio and factory wiring?

    • @KingTen91
      @KingTen91 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fred Lyst There is an aftermarket radio but it was there when I bought the vibe, when I was installing my amp and subs I pulled the radio out and noticed there was an aftermarket set of wires ran from the deck wrapped in a logo'd insulator but I didn't notice anything that resembled that blue capacitor behind the deck, if that's what you mean by converter,
      --also, I claimed before my vibe had the factory amp and tweeters, apparently this is not the case, I thought that any vibe with factory tweeters also had an amp in correspondence with the moon n tunes models but apparently they also had models with only teeters and no amp; either that or someone removed the amp, either way, with the Polk dxi6501 (you had dxi6500 but those are discontinued for whatever reason) will I need an amp? I read your post to genvibe.com and you mentioned you ran the speakers straight off of the deck but with only 20 watts going to the speakers would it be worth it to get a 4 channel amp or do these perform well enough on their own? I don't want to make life more difficult than it has to be but I also would rather pay the $ if I'm going to notice a big difference

      Philip Lotti hey bro. You might just need to Ground your factory amp. if equipped with it,. It would be amongst the wires leading to the factory radio “deck” plug in. Look up, make & model year. (Radio Wire harness diagram) or something along those lines. Hopefully you got it rocking already!,.if not hope this helps

    What are the exact dimensions of the amplifier? I want to replace mine with a NVX JAD900.5 from www.sonicelectronix.com/item_40253_NVX-JAD900.5.html. I've never used a D Class amp for front speakers before, I hope it isn't a mistake.

    what could i put in behind the speakers to serve as sound dampening?

  • @tinyhippo1644
    @tinyhippo1644 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    do you actually need the crossovers or would you just be able to hook the stereo up with the adapter harness and then just splice into the factory harnesses or run new wire up to the head unit?

    • @lustderf
      @lustderf  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The stock vibe speakers have a built in crossover, the crossover is not part of the OEM wiring harness. When replacing the speakers you will need to use a replacement crossover. The exception is if you have the monsoon package with OEM sub, the sub output has high frequencies filtered out by the monsoon amp.

    • @sk8maniac955

      so i have the 4 speaker system in my car. no sub, no tweeters. if im replacing all 4 speakers do i need to add in the crossover, if so whats the point of the cross over? i thought it was as simple as putting the new speakers in and using the small adapter cable to plug the new speaker into the existing wire. My car already has an aftermarket stereo btw.

    • @lustderf
      @lustderf  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not worked on the 4 speaker system. The crossover filters the low frequencies that would damage the tweeter. Without seeing the aftermarket setup, it would be hard to answer your question.

    The matrix unfortunately does not have the amp or the wiring for it. I looked at several different year matrix in the the salvage yard, and none had any of the necessary wiring for the amp. That to me is so odd because the matrix offered the JBL stereo upgrade, minus the amp, but with piezo tweeters!? That doesn’t make sense to me at least. Basically you can say you have a great stereo, minus a lot of the great. It’s also weird to see that the vibe could be optioned with the tweeters, power mirrors, amp, and no power windows, all in the same car, huh!?

      I’m Jazzy1 and I was wondering where and how you installed your tweeters from your components, since you didn’t have stock tweeters? I have been looking in junk yards for the mirror screw cover that had the tweeter screen and bracket. I’m almost ready to order new/aftermarket pieces. I really like the look of flush mounted tweeters vs the install plastic mounting bracket and have them sticking out and looking odd. IMO. Hopefully I see a reply. If not I will leave a link to my install video or at least pics of how/ where I ran wiring and placement of amps and speakers/ tweeters. 2x HERTZ Millie pro components. Hertz 200.3 amp and 8inch sub combo. With class AB amp.

    • @jasonwoytuck1810
      @jasonwoytuck1810 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TECH WHIZ. sorry I should have mentioned that this was for you. I have a 65 W x4@4ohm Hertz ClassAB amp and I have a 85 W x4 @4ohm Class D amp is the class D amp going to be okay for sound as it’s 20x4 W higher then the other amp. But I know that Class AB is nicer cleaner sound but power hungry vs the highly efficient D Class. Speakers are 110 W rms. Each and I have 2 sets of the components. So essentially need 440 W rms of amp. I can bridge the Class AB and buy one more AB class to run both sets. It would be 195 Wx2 @4 ohms. Then keep each amp at just over half gain. Would this work? Asking anyone who would know thank you.
