Hey Paul. I really loved your sketching. This was a great insight for me. I wonder how you premix these variations of tones? Weather you use watercolor or ink for that matter. It'll be awesome if I get some help.
I use a Kuretake water brush filled with diluted Noodler’s Lexington Gray fountain pen ink for the washes. Actually two of them, one with a lighter gray and one with a darker one.
