    For those interested, i set up a blind test here in the mixed and raw versions. Listen, THEN read the notes for the playlist or individual files. I've got links to the hi-res files as well in the notes of each one (mixed vs raw). Many thanks to Mike and Julia for graciously agreeing to send the files over!

    wow. strong chance I'll be grabbing one of these. currently in possession of a vintage u87 and vintage akg 414, and I'm still blown away by the sound.

    I’ve been using the V13 for around 3 years. It has consistently been the preferred mic on all the vocalists I’ve recorded here.

    I've used this mic and I tell everyone to "Just buy it!" I tested it on (my bass) male vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and electric bass. You found the same thing I found: it will stand up to all the mics in this video.

      Absolutely! It really is a no brainer at the price point it's at.

      Hi, I'm thinking of buying this mic, but want to know how does it pick up ambient noises coming from AC fan, etc. I tried TLM 103 and it's very sensitive mic and picked small noises. The mic I'm trying to replace is my very old Groove Tubes GT55 fet mic.

    Cool test! The way vintage mics handels sibilance and how they sit in the mix is what you pay for. Does it really matter? Not really... But I do own a few nice vintage and they're hard to beat but most modern microphones will do. I'd like to try out some Vanguard mics, they seem to be great especially considering the price point.

    • @BetterMixes
      @BetterMixes  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm glad you liked it! I'd definitely recommend trying them out! But yeah, the vintage mics in this test are absolutely classics for a reason. I'm just always happy when I find modern mic designs that can hang with them.

      Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
      The 251 is the one I EXPECTED to like the best (and in a different song/context and on a different day when it wasn't being so noisy, it might have been). I've never personally gotten along with the midrange pokeyness of the 47, but obviously, a LOT of people disagree with me there 😆

    • @derek-vanguardaudiolabs9779
      @derek-vanguardaudiolabs9779 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@BetterMixesI think the U47 has this thing going for it where that midrange helps the vocals pop forward a bit more in a busy mix. The C800G does something similar but in a different way. In the mix, it can really do its thing.

    • @derek-vanguardaudiolabs9779
      @derek-vanguardaudiolabs9779 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@BetterMixes I'm also a fan of the 251, generally speaking. It's so dang smooth. The one thing I fault (and this is really an AKG design thing) is the lack of low end can be problematic at times. The transformer they used for them is small and didn't handle low freqs well, so they limited the amount of LF that would hit the transformer. The same can be said about the original C12 and C24, although they limited the low end to different frequencies by means of various other components in the circuit.

    • @BetterMixes
      @BetterMixes  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ah, interesting! I never knew that about the AKG transformers. That definitely explains that very lean AKG family sound.

  • @AnwaarAliOfficial

    How sensitive this mic is? Does this mic pickup background ambient noises coming from computer fan, etc? TLM 103 is very sensitive to ambient sounds and picks up everything.

    • @BetterMixes
      @BetterMixes  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's been a long time since I've used a TLM 103, but I'm GUESSING the background noises would be similar in cardioid, likely slightly better on the V13 as the top end is a little less hyped, but the benefit of the V13 is it's multipatern, so you could try tightening the polar pattern to reject more background noise.

    • @AnwaarAliOfficial
      @AnwaarAliOfficial 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @BetterMixes I'm looking at V13 gen2 and Warm Audio wa87 r2. Which mic you think I should get? Is there big difference in vocal sound quality between the tube and non tube mic?

    • @BetterMixes
      @BetterMixes  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@AnwaarAliOfficial Out of those two, I would definitely go with the V13. Most of the Warm mics I've tried (including the 87) have been good mics but not great mics. The V13, to me, is a great mic. It's never felt like a compromise in any way to me. Plus, the extra polar patterns (like hypercardioid) could be useful in dealing with background noise.

    • @AnwaarAliOfficial
      @AnwaarAliOfficial 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @BetterMixes I was looking at V13 Gen2 mic online and saw customer returned mics at discounted prices. The question is, if the mic sounds good then why people are returning it?

    • @BetterMixes
      @BetterMixes  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@AnwaarAliOfficial Maybe it just didn't meet their particular needs? I dunno. I don't think there's a single mic out there that EVERYONE likes, so it might just not have been for them. Like that would be the same reason that you can buy a used u47 or 251, not because they're not good, but because they weren't filling a need for somebody. (Also, as a side note, if it says B-Stock, that's not necessarily a return, that can be a lot of different things. Again, IF that's what it says. I obviously don't know what site you're looking at, I just can't recall ever seeing a store call it a customer return item, so I was thinking maybe it said B-stock, but again, I dunno!).

    Is the Vanguard better then the Lauten LA320 in your opinion?

    • @BetterMixes
      @BetterMixes  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They're both fantastic mics, and I don't think you can go wrong with either. I use both regularly at my studio. The Vanguard has a little bit of that classic midrange push where as the Lauten has a more modern, relaxed midrange. I'll often use the Vanguard for folk or americana where that rich midrange compliments the style or even for more rock kind of stuff where the midrange push helps the vocal to cut through. I'll use the Lauten for poppier tracks where I want a little more of a clear sound, or it's great on singers who naturally have a lot of midrange in their voice as it helps to tame that a bit.
      That being said, if I didn't own both of them, either one could absolutely get the job done on most singers.

      @@BetterMixes Thank you for your swift reply. Really apriciated. I want to use it for vocal recording mainly, Its in a home studio. I have a Mojave Fett 301 now but we are looking for a possible Tube mic to. If it is not to much asked. Could you take a listen to my voice and tell me wich of the Lauten or the Vanguard would fit better in your opinion . Just click on my profile picture. The song Rode Rozen was recorded at home with the Fett. That is kind of the style I am mostly singing and recording.

    • @BetterMixes

      This is the gen2. I also have a gen1, and they're very similar. I haven't done a direct side-by-side comparison yet (it's on my to-do list!), but they're close enough that I use them as a stereo pair all the time!

      Definitely the most underrated Neumann mic! I almost always preferred the 67 over the 47 on pretty much every source (especially drums! the 67 on drum rooms is just *chef's kiss*).
