If I record raps TLM 103 is ALWAYS my go to mic. Vocalist just performs 10x times better in it listening by himself/herself. It's also the best Voiceover mic out there. Even if the rest song is recorded in 87/251, raps still record in 103.

It's crazy how everybody ears are different! I remember trying out both but hating the Vanguard's sound. Note: I also took the interior pop filter out of 102. I love the artists insight! Great video!!!
to a degree, mics are the marriage of the subjective and the objective. We make mics the way we like records to sound, but that's not everyone's idea of how a record should sound. Takes a lot of paintbrushes and colors to make a painting, and we're happy to make our specific paintbrush. Thanks for trying out our mic!
The Vanguard is smoother than the 102 in the high and low/mid frequencies. The 102 seemed punchy to me in the low, low/mid. I like both for what they have to offer and in a perfect world, especially for the rap vocals, if I can fuse them both, it would be the perfect mic for that application no matter the tone of the rapper.
on the female voice: v4 (v4 has more beautiful highs with a bigger 'friction surface'. (aluminum foil character...tlm102 more like a dot/string in the hi-end) On the male rap: tlm102! (tlm102 has more grip and punch in this case.. hi-end more focused while v4 a bit 'lame') Both very close. I know these are strange associations...maybe it's the preamp as well..at least a bit.. wasn't it you who is using the chameleon labs? Interesting sound! I like the high frequencies of the v4 right from the start (first note I heard already convinced me). But how do these two mics differ when you put compression on them, put them into a whole song and mix and master it (I mean throw a somehow 'ok' master-chain on them) I found out that if you simulate what it would more or less sound like in the end you can really hear the differences of the mics. The pure sound doesn't reveal that much of how they work in a finished song.
No my friend the 103 was the best the top end was clear and focused the vanguard has a smooth sound with a balanced sound the tlm responded to the vocals with a wider dynamic range and it sits in a destengish middle and focused
I agree with your choice of the Vanguard over the TLM. Great to hear the artist interviews too.
