    Wow. That compatibility philosophy really makes me want to buy their stuff. :D Also I'm really, really surprised how reasonably priced they are, while indeed sounding quite nice! Also super elegant concept, the V44S - love that stereo under the ride sound! The V1s make for lovely crisp, tight overheads. Would love to see them compared to other common small diaphragms, maybe go deeper on how they work for acoustic guitars or even a piano...

    Good job showcasing how they add value to a studio. Useful and versatile. I like the idea of them playing nice with other gear. Nice rich midrange. nice color on the larger capsules. nice omni sound on the small caps on overheads. I agree, those mics are almost ribbon-like in some ways.

    Your cinematography is so good! I love these mics too, especially in the drum examples. The wide cardioid on the pencil mics I thought was pretty spectacular. As well as the V44 in the different positions.

    Outstanding video-thank you for the clear, thoughtful presentation. The smooth clarity of the V1 samples on drum OH is impressive-pretty close to my ideal OH sound, especially the subcardioid.

      @@DerekBVanguardAudioLabs The interchangeable capsule design and the ability to play nice with other gear is highly appealing with these units.

      @@SmithMediaSolutions we think versatility is very important in modern music production. People don't have the six-figure mic budgets that big studios did back in the day, so having mics that can do a fantastic job on multiple sources is a must for the modern engineer. We try to push the envelope on every mic we develop, and this was by far the most challenging and rewarding design work we've done so far. Thanks for the feedback and the kind words! -DEREK @ Vanguard

    14:04 this technique of mixing/matching different polar patterns on a voice, with the benefit of one mic body for overhead drum mic'ing... man, I've had a pair of C214's that I've grown to despise for the last little while, they might clear out and make room for that V44s. Great sounding mic.

    I own the V44s and it's seriously bumped up my on overheads, when recording on location in particular. Reason being ( overheads for example ), when I'm in a small room = Cardiod, and Large room = Fig8 ( widens up image AND catches the room ambience from the rear, ( saves on track count! ) ).
    I also use it as a plain old, upright Blumlien pair, about an arms length in front of a folk singer songwriter ( usually in a VERY large room with natural reverb ). I was going closer for a little while ( for that more intimate dry vibe, and when the room is garbage ), but realized even with a singer trying not to move, those minor movements translate pretty wide ( distractingly so ) if you are hard panning ( narrower panning helps, but changes what I'm after tonally ). I have yet to experiment with narrowing the angle at the mic ( Duhhh ) but look forward to that very soon.
    I also get a lot out of the windscreen that comes with it ( recording cityscapes, outdoor performances, unpredictable screamo poetry at house shows, ect..... )
    ~Steve

    Hey Ryan, nicely done, as usual. I am just now learning more about these Vanguard Audio Labs mics....and they seem really nice. I am curious, you didn't say what your settings were when you used the V44s as the wurst mic. Can you remember what the configuration was? It sounds wonderful.

    Hey Ryan, loving your content and very tempted with the Vanguars v1 set with the lollies but also with the Soyuz su13 set. Main use is on drum overheads and acoustic/electric guitar. What do you recommend?

    • @creativesoundlab
      @creativesoundlab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For me, I liked the v1 the best and liked the lolli cap less. The v1 is the smoothest and best ballenced SDC that I have. The Soyuz is aggressive and has more high end. Both are amazing. For me, I used the Soyuz when I want something to stand out. The V1 is fantastic for drums because it’s not too bright and it’s very smooth. The V1 is like a ribbon mic disguised as a SDC. The Soyuz is really a medium diaphragm and more flavor/EQed sound.

    Hey Ryan, great to see you're working with the V44s! I recently got to one on demo and I think it sounds very good on acoustic guitar. Below I'll post the link to the video, but first I have two questions about your experience with the V44s:
    1. Did you find use for other angles than 0° and 90°?
    2. Have you used the transformer box for anything different than microphones? For example encoding a full mix to M/S and using it to feed outboard, similar to the way you did that in a more recent video.
    Here's my first demo with the V44s: th-cam.com/video/DFza9MIU_bM/w-d-xo.html

    Really interesting to hear the 44s switch from blumlein to XY. Low mids suddenly sound a bit muddier. I believe this mics are also branded Avantone. Looking to pick one up at some point to use over the kit.

    I wonder how good they are compared to Oktavas. They have a better look anyway.

    • @DerekBVanguardAudioLabs
      @DerekBVanguardAudioLabs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends SOOOO much on the version of the Oktavas. I have some of the original russian MK012s and they are dynamite with a little bit of modification (the capsules are brilliant, and the head amp circuitry is a tire fire). YMMV with these guys. if you can find a pair of the original russians and are handy with a soldering iron, IMO they give that Schoeps warmth+detail thing and are maybe some of the finest solo piano mics you could buy. I ended up doing a modified version of the Dorsey mod that included some fancy-pants new transistors, and it made them SING.
