Why I chose the Honda CRF300L over the 300L Rally? (Mods & Accessories)

  • Finally got around to posting about my new bike swap. I had been riding the Honda CRF300L Rally for over 18 months, but the more off-roading I did I felt I needed to try the CRF300L. As soon as I rode it, I loved it! So I now have one and swapped it out for my Rally.
    In this video I talk about the accessories and modifications I have made to make the bike better when out adventure riding. I have the NEW Mosko Moto Reckless 40L V4.0 panniers (only a month old) and they are just awesome. Let me know in the comments if you would like to see a video on these in more detail.

      You can't go wrong if you get the CRF300L. There are loads of accessories out there now. Let me know what you end up buying!

    That may be a better choice in NZ but here in the middle of the US we have to travel to find decent off road motocamping. I like the extra wind protection and range. The funky cool headlights are a bonus for me too! 8)

    • @kiwionbike
      @kiwionbike  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fair enough. Yeah, if you are regularly having to travel 3-4hrs then a wind visor would help. I honestly haven't noticed a big difference myself though after trading in my CRF300 Rally. Those funky headlights are definitely unique :)

    Thanks for showing all the mods! Also fun to see the Kiwi's get a totally different headlight and set of blinks than our EU models.
    Was also curious why you went with the reckless 40 instead of the 80? I was thinking of getting the 80 so I can store all luggage on the sides and keep the weight low and only using to luggage if it's really necessary.

    • @kiwionbike
      @kiwionbike  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment! Yes I think the model is slightly different here with the LED lights and indicators. I previously had the Reckless 80L and I just found it too big and bulky for my CRF300. I have tried to minimise what I carry now when I adventure travel and keep things to basics. I can easily store all the equipment I need for a 3-4 day trip in this 40L version. I didn't mention it in my video, but I also purchased the extra 4L auxiliary pockets that each go under the each side of the luggage. I haven't had a need to install them yet as I was able to fit everything in with just the current system. If I even do need more luggage space, I'll just add those and maybe also the bigger stinger bag. I've just uploaded a new review video on the bags. Check it out on my channel. Hope this helps!

      @@kiwionbike so with the r40 you have no problem going on a week camping trip including tent, flipflops and sleeping bag?

    Very interesting perspective to hear. I have a Rally on order so will be trying it out soon. One mod you didn't mention is the suspension--Did you get by on the standard suspension with the Rally, and same with the L?

    • @kiwionbike
      @kiwionbike  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I still currently am using the standard suspension. I honestly don't mind it too much, but I am not a fast rider. I am going to wait until the time comes when I need to replace the suspension and then I will look at a better suspension option. I am not an expert though on this subject. I need to ride another bike with modified suspension to compare against. There are lots of suspension options now available for the CRF300L which is great.

    Did you install your harness in the wide setting or the narrow setting, the luggage fits perfectly. Thank you for the video, new subscriber here!

      From memory, I think i did the narrow setting. I basically just eyed it up and sat it on the rear to get a gauge of what it would look like. I'm really happy with the setup, and I've had them now for several months without any issues at all.

    Rally is about 10kgs heavier, half of it due to a 12lt fuel tank instead of 8lts.
    Now you've put on an even bigger tank than the rally, so most of the weight advantage is gone.
    And you're still missing weather protection(windscreen) dual front led lights and bigger front disk.
    And a slightly wider seat...

    • @kiwionbike
      @kiwionbike  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Good insight and I weighed this up. The acerbis fuel tank is lighter as a product compared to the stock tank, and I mainly use the full size of the tank when travelling long distances between trails. Overall it has been lighter. The windshield isn’t an issue for me. I don’t notice much difference between having it vs not having it. You just get a few more bug splatters on your chest 😆. If you are riding more on-road then the rally is the one to get, but like me I do more off-road riding and this really works for me after riding both. Thanks for the comment!

    Interesting! I have the 300L and my dad has the 300L Rally. I actually prefer his bike. It rides nicer with the wider fuel tank/seat, vibrates less and feels more peppy. Not to mention I’ve spent a lot of $$$ on mods that the Rally already came with. They are very different bikes. Have fun with yours!

    • @kiwionbike
      @kiwionbike  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes definitely agree that they are different bikes. I really enjoyed my CRF300 Rally and I think if I were to ride it more on the road than offroad that I would have kept it. I do however prefer the 300L now that I am riding mostly offroad. Thanks for the comment!

    I am still waiting to hear why you prefer the L over the Rally? It looks like the Rally has more wind protection, a larger front brake and larger fuel capacity. That would lead be to believe it’s a better adventure bike. The L looks to be more of a dual sport. I guess it depends on what type of riding you do. Based on what you’ve done to your bike, you should have the Rally.

    • @kiwionbike
      @kiwionbike  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oops! Must have missed your earlier comment sorry! I did own a CRF300 Rally for over a year and it's a great bike, but honestly you don't lose anything by going with the CRF300L if you get the acerbis 14L fuel tank mod. I have no issues with riding it on the open road for 2-3 hours. The wind breaker I think is over-rated as it doesn't really make a big difference in my honest opinion. As I like to do more back country and off roads, the CRF300L suits me better as it is more narrow and slightly lighter. Plus I think it looks better overall. Just my opinion though, and I'm sure anyone who buys a rally will have a great time on that bike also. Hope this reply helps!

    I have a crf300l here in Australia. I am about to put the large acerbis tank on.i hear you have to modify the intcator brackets, Because they touch the tank when you turn the handle bars, What did you do to fix the problem mate ?

    • @kiwionbike
      @kiwionbike  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Very good observation! I discovered this when I installed my tank. If you have the LED indicators (which you should do if you purchased it in Australia), then you should be okay and just slightly bend the indicators inward. It didn't take much of a bend inward slightly to fix the issue. I heard that there are some custom brackets you can get, but I wouldn't worry about it as it really isn't too much of an issue. What you do need to be careful of if you install the Acerbis tank is that when you go to fill up at the gas station, make sure that the inside rubber seal doesn't fall out from the petrol cap. It can easily fall out! It happened to me without me noticing and I ended up travelling 100km with gas splashing out all over the place. Luckily I backtracked to the same petrol station and luckily it was still there on the ground where it fell out.

    Is the stock chain not made by DID already?

    • @kiwionbike
      @kiwionbike  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I believe the stock chain is DID but a really cheap one, and when I owned the CRF300L Rally, that chain stretched really easily. I ended up replacing it for a much better DID chain.

    It’s probably best you have the usb as you have it, or you will leave something charging one day and your battery will be flat

    • @kiwionbike
      @kiwionbike  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good point, but I thought to myself that this scenario would probably never happen (hopefully). If I did need to charge something, it would only be for a couple hours max or something when I am out on the trails. It would need to take a lot of power to drain the motorbike battery, and I previously had it wired that way for a few months with no issues on my older CRF300L Rally. Thanks for the comment though!
