TESLA Model S Crash Test - REALLY Safe??

  • / @youcartv The 2017 Tesla Model S, a large luxury sedan, earns good ratings in all IIHS crashworthiness evaluations except the challenging small overlap front crash test, in which it earns an acceptable rating. Despite lengthening the side curtain airbags to improve small overlap protection in the Model S, Tesla ran into problems in the test when the safety belt allowed the dummy’s torso to move too far forward. That allowed the dummy’s head to hit the steering wheel hard through the airbag. Measurements from the dummy indicated that injuries to the head, along with the lower right leg, would be possible in a real-world crash of the same severity.
    The ratings for the Model S apply to 2016 and 2017 cars built after October 2016. Tesla says it made a production change on Jan. 23 to address the head-contact problem, and IIHS will test the updated vehicle for small overlap protection as soon as it can be delivered.
    ► These results are valid only for models sold in the USA

      these cars really aren't that expensive to make compared to their sticker price. it is jacked up for customers as everything is for the tech field. and it's for our safety! but I hear ya. I used to feel the same way before I started working in the industry. 😁

      Nothing wrong with enjoying a crash test video. It's not like they're being destroyed for fun. And also what TGTID is saying is that products usually have a low cost of production compared to their selling price which is how companies make a profit. For example, an Iphone 7 costs about $230 to manufacture and sells for $600 - $800. Not sure about a Tesla though.

    "Tesla says it made a production change on Jan. 23 to address the head-contact problem, and IIHS will test the updated vehicle for small overlap protection as soon as it can be delivered."
    That's what I like about Tesla - they're quick to make engineering changes to improve their vehicles right away, instead of waiting for the next model year.

      Epic Benjo well it has to do with their model of how they sell you the car. They are built to order so the changes can be made fairly quickly unlike the big auto manufacturers. Which they actually have third party contractors make different parts of the car. It would cost too much money to change just one thing that's why they wait till the next year model.

      It doesn't matter, All that matters in a small overlap crash test is the A pillar. As long as there is no intrusion into the body structure, the passenger is safe.

      ScioTv what do you expect windows to do. when they do the crush test only the passengers windows popped, yea not ideal. but we dont know how much weight they had pushing against the car at that point. and regardless windows will eventually shatter. Notice the roof (pretty sure that one is the full sunroof) it's impressive it bent that much and didnt shatter. if it did that would have been the most dangerous window to explode both because of size, and because it's right above the driver so shards could have found themselves all over a victim had it broke.

      The Zoe is awesome! That said, if a Model S hits a Zoe, I would want to be in the Model S, as the Zoe will act like a bouncy ball due to weight difference. Both going 60, it will be a 40 crash for the Tesla and 80 crash for the Zoe. The energy going into the Tesla will necessarily be the same as for the Zoe, but the direction change will be a lot steeper on the Zoe, putting more stress on the passengers.

    Yes tesla I agree the airbag look like it was positioned weirdly. But what I like about them is that they are quick to fix things and most times without people asking them to. Now if they can just get refinement and more reliability on point we'll be good. Although reliability is not all that bad just a few places where you wouldn't look we would find mistakes.

    • @nathangek
      @nathangek 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      How did it not give any protection?have you ever seen a crash test with an unsafe car? They completely crumble and the person inside is crushed. Here you see that the whole cabin keeps its shape while the rest outside the cabin crumbles to absorb the energy from the impact and thus minimize the shock. It's doing exactly what you would want from a car.

    • @niveshk936

      IIHS has very tough standards compared to others. Even if the car gets rejected by IIHS but gets selected by other agencies, It is allowed for public.

    • @niveshk936
      @niveshk936 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      James May That's not true…!
      It got 5/5 stars even in Ncap test.
      U seem to be quite jealous of tesla as you haven't even verified from Ncap site before writing something wrong about it.

    • @jamesmay1426
      @jamesmay1426 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Nivesh K
      The majority of cars get 5 stars in the Euro NCAP. Perhaps you are the one who has some "verifying" to do.
      It did poorly in the side collision and the pedestrian safety was downright awful.
      www.euroncap.com/en/results/tesla/model-s/7897

    • @niveshk936
      @niveshk936 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James May
      Well if that's the case then you can't actually say that it performed poorly in NCAP because they rate many cars as 5 stars.
      Or maybe i should say, all of the cars rated 5 stars performed poorly in test.

    • @xderrado8118
      @xderrado8118 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      in fact it is, when the car was hit in the corner the car was pushed to the side a little bit so, that's why the dummy's head missed the airbag and no, the seatbelt worked if it wasnt there the dummy would go flying, the seatbelt isnt supposed to stop you from moving at all it is just supposed to stop you from FLYING away
