2017 BMW i3 Vs 2016 Tesla Model S - Crash Test

  • IIHS: Tesla Model S, BMW i3 fall short in recent crash tests
    The Chevy Volt and Toyota Prius Prime are still the safest plug-in picks.
    To be an IIHS Top Safety Pick, cars must achieve a "good" rating in the five crash tests, and have an "advanced" or "superior" available front crash prevention system. Having headlights rated "good" or "acceptable" give it the "plus" rating. While plug-in vehicles like the Toyota Prius Prime and the Chevrolet Volt have earned the IIHS 2017 Top Safety Pick+ award, the recently evaluated Tesla Model S and the BMW i3 come up short.
    In the small overlap front crash test, the Tesla's safety belt didn't prevent the dummy's head from hitting the steering wheel through the airbag. The IIHS also noted a possible leg injury in that test. Tesla said it would fix this issue in cars produced beginning January 26, so now its IIHS' turn to smash the car up again to see if its rating improves.
    Interestingly, the P100D variant only earns an "acceptable" rating in the rollover test. The roof strength is no different from the rest of the Model S lineup, which are rated "good," but the weight of its big battery puts more stress on the structure while shiny-side-down. Finally, its headlights get a "poor" rating from the IIHS.
    The BMW i3's biggest shortcoming is in its head restraints. In a rear-end collision, it only gets an "acceptable" rating, which puts occupants at a greater risk of a neck injury. The IIHS laments that the i3 is the only vehicle in the small car category that doesn't get a "good" rating in this test. The i3's headlights also miss the mark, as the only option gets an "acceptable" rating.
    "There's no reason that the most efficient vehicles can't be among the safest," says David Zuby, IIHS chief research officer. If you're wondering about the Chevrolet Bolt, the IIHS says it'll obliterate examples of it in the name of safety later this year.

    so just claim the other two cars are better without showing their crash tests?
    also why is auto-braking assumed to be safe? i have it on my car and it's extremely dangerous, often braking in situations it has mis-understood to be dangerous (sharp bends and lane-changing of both my car and others into my lane, for example) and put my car and its occupants in harm's way.

      In order to earn a rating for 2017, you can pretty much only test 2016 models since 2017 are not yet available, hence the title. Esp. if you are releasing said video early in the year....

    • @placerdemaio
      @placerdemaio 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ck m The title says ''Vs 2017 tesla model S'', mislead people that thinks that the quality right now are like this, and in the original video they raised the test level for a higher standard, so that was obviously impossible for the company to predict them, in that old model that was tested shown in the video.

    I feel the comment about the advanced safety system being an addon is very misleading... The feature is not available on the newer Teslas as the software is not ready (being released this week). All cars ship with the hardware and will have the features even if you don't order the auto pilot feature. Also, the older autopilot cars (AP1) do have this feature and they recently revealed that on its software release for those cars accidents involving the air bags dropped by 40%.

      if you do tests for everything on the market in 2017 then of course they are going to be done in 2016... I have no idea how you would assume anything else. maybe it should have said "Crash test for 2017 line up of e-cars" or something like that for those unfamiliar with how the kind of thing works... I dunno. They are not trying to mislead, they are just used to doing things a certain way.

    • @martinsoendergaard-jensen9602
      @martinsoendergaard-jensen9602 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Boi they say 2017 because this is the most up-to-date car and it's the car that they're making in 2017. And although you have shares in the company, that doesn't mean that it's your company. You have no control over any of the actions or decisions they make. Your stupidity is astounding and very amusing.

    What people love about Tesla is they take these seriously. Improvements aren't made year to year but ASAP. There is a video where a guy. Bought 2 model 3's same year but months apart and shows the differences. Not to mention you can tweet the CEO and get a response. That approach is what is industry shattering.

    I don't like Tesla but it has to be said they do pretty well being new on the market. At BMW, everything is an option. When you buy a 3-series, the seats are bad & there is no support for the head to rest. They are literally punishing you for not buying the 5-series. So no, not quite surprised it's outperformed by 'lesser' brands such as Toyota and Chevrolet. I wonder how the first EV Volvo would perform as in Europe, it is considered among the safest of cars.

    I have a question, for the front passenger's airbag, there is a dashboard in from of the right. So what happen when the airbag deploys?? Won't the dashboard fly right off to the face of the passenger?? 🤔

    • @fredrikgranberg611
      @fredrikgranberg611 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No dashboard parts will fly away. They will rip up enough to let the airbag out.

      THE SYSTEM IS DISABLED BECAUSE THEY NEED TO SPECULATE HOW SAFE THE CAR IS, OR THE *CRASH* TEST WOULD BE POINTLESS

    • @DNWerner
      @DNWerner 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course the system is disabled for the test - but nonetheless the BMW's result page states that there is a prevention system for it, while the Tesla's result page says crash prevention isn't available.

      Mate its just like Tesla said themself, its not a goddamn automatic pilot. You need to keep you eyes on the road, sure it helps and stuff like that. But it won't be able to predict weird roads and retarded drivers. Sure it will be the fault of the retarded driver, but you might be left with destroyed legs or something.

      @cy9nvs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not the point.. They're different sizes anyways. The point is to see how a small EV and a long EV perform in crash tests because there's not much in between the very front of the vehicle and the driver.
