2024 Toyota GR86 M/T Review - Still A Track Weapon |

  • In the convoluted history of the model, the Toyota GR86 is either a continuation of the 86-nameplate that first came about in the 90s and gained fame with the Initial-D franchise, or a second-generation model of the venerable Toyota GT86 that took the world by storm about a decade ago and put Toyota back on the map as a maker of fun, reliable, and affordable enthusiast cars. Fast-forward to 2024 and the demands of this segment haven't changed much, but have become a little more sophisticated, which is what the GR86 aims to address.
With a bigger, brawnier engine up front, a mildly-upgraded interior in the middle, and a gorgeous body draped over what is ultimately a beautifully-balanced, fastidiously-engineered chassis, we take the manual-transmission GR86 out for a week to put its through its paces and determine if it's truly a daily-driveable sports car, or if it's gone a little too far off the deep end.

That car needs the Performance Package, which the tested vehicle did not. With the SACHS and Brembos, it’s an absolute track weapon.

Ordered mine a couple of weeks ago, waiting eagerly for its arrival. Great review!

Hi where are you located? I cannot order it from Toyota directly but have to either get on waitlist or get notified when a certain dealer has a random assigned car in stock.

That looks like the base model. That is not the duck bill spoiler. FYI

Why doesn’t this overpriced Porsche drive with the refinement of a GR86.

Porsches are not refined. They're still low, firm and have a lot of road and wind noise. They're more refined than an 86 but they're not as comfortable as an average used camry you can get for 20-30 grand.

@@xFlared more refined than a GR86? Perhaps in performance, but I’ll take Subaru/Toyota reliability and cheaper parts all day long over the Porsche.

I have one, and I have to agree, it's not a daily driver and a terrible cruiser. The road noise is terrible, which makes the average sound system sound terrible. It does it's best work on a and b roads, avoid the motorway! The ride is pretty good though for what it is. However, spend a few more grand and you can turn this car into a good daily.
