Jeannie Bass is a voice hearer and person who lives with other unique experiences, usually labeled “psychosis” by psychiatry and much of society. She has built a life of purpose not despite of her disability but because of what navigating life with multiple realities has taught her.
Since finding the international hearing voices movement a decade ago, Jeannie has learned to make meaning and work with the voices she hears that others don’t. This is contrary to the former narrative of not separating how she saw the world from voices, visions, and beliefs, while relying on a system for survival that left little hope for a life worth living.
Jeannie is a long-time member of the Hearing Voices Network-USA board of directors. She works as the Director of Peer Support Services at an inpatient psychiatric hospital. Her story was featured on an NBC special in 2018. Jeannie will launch her website 'Voices With Reason,' a space for her writing, a collection of resources, and place to learn more about her work SOON.

It took the movie "A Beautiful Mind" for me to fully appreciate just how real the voices are to the person hearing them.

All cognac is brandy, but not all brandy is cognac. All psychopaths have volumetric deficiencies in brain parts associated with emotion processing, goal setting, motivation and self-control, but not all psychopaths are serial murderers. Psychosis probably needs a new definition because one size does not fit all.
