    Guest bio:
Naftal Benisty is a trained Social Worker from the Netherlands. Naftal contracted Lyme disease in the Summer of 2016. After antibiotic treatment for Lyme, shortly after he developed a severe form of tinnitus. After two months of barely sleeping and trying homeopathic remedies as a sleeping aid with no avail, he declined rapidly.
Desperate, exhausted and cognitively declined he begged his G.P. for a sleeping aid and he was prescribed several Benzodiazepines. Despite instantly having adverse effects, he would settle taking anything for some relief.
By 2020 Naftal was on a staggering amount of Benzos and dealing with severe fatigue almost every day. In January 2021 thought the Benzo wasn’t effective anymore and briefly checked the internet for an alternative. He asked his prescriber to switch him to a Z-drug. After instantly switching, he experienced his first psychosis a week later.
Still not knowledgeable about Benzodiazepines, he did connect his psychosis to switching medications and reinstated. Naftal had a gut feeling something was wrong and sought professional help. After five years on being on high levels of Benzos, he finally got treated for tinnitus and insomnia with cognitive behavioral therapy.
Learning there is no such thing as a sleeping aid that helps long term, he wanted to come off the Benzo. To rapid tapers, an instant switch to Valium (Diazepam) and cold turkey events led to a life-threatening event and kindling. Eventually he instated 7 milligrams of Valium (Diazepam) and ended up holding on 5 milligrams of Valium.
After months of acute withdrawal; barely sleeping, psychosis, grand mal seizures, akathisia and an endless list of debilitating symptoms, he went to look online in a state of severe cognitive impairment and found a few sources like the Ashton Manual. Shocked to learn what happened to him and the uneducated medical community, he was compelled to speak out and inform others.
In October 2022 Naftal started his podcast Benzotired as a novice, which mostly revolves about this journey trying to come off and finding information about Benzodiazepines. Additionally, he advocates for awareness in his country. Throughout the show he has guests on who share their story being harmed by Benzodiazepines. Benzotired is best listened to on Spotify.

Many of the elderly will not have the luxury of having 30, 20, or even 10 years to see the end of recovery....but we sure as hell will fight this dependence until the day we die. We do this not because we are brave but because it is the right thing to do. We have been lied to about the effects of these drugs and sometimes when you get older it can be either a matter of principle or a matter of making things right because of or in spite of the fact that we have so little time left. I may not reach the light at the end of the tunnel...but that's direction I'm headed.

I am a long term user. 30 years; prescribed for post partum depression. This is a super accurate story of what many of us have been through. The medical gaslighting is the worst! It really messed with my previous high self confidence. Thank you both for this interview.

I was on dalmane 30mg for 20 years. Took according to prescription. Myelin stopped making dalmane in 2022. That is when my nightmare began. I was treated like a drug addict. No one believed the hell I was going through , no one. My doctor placed me on 5mg diazepam but immediately started cutting the dose. He said i could come off in 2 mos. I finally researched on you tube and discovered what was happening to my horror. A np psychiatrist tried to polypharma me. She said 2 mos was sufficient also. After 4 mos of pure hell I found a np who took pity on me and rekindled me on 20 mg diazepam. I still feel as if I have neurological damage but at least i can function. My life will never be the same.

Can I make a comment I’m 55 and have been on Diazepam since 1999 is my brain damaged or can I get off it and down the years find peace

Yes, you can get off, but you must take it very, very slowly, especially since you have been on for such a long time. We suggest you look into micro tapering as a method as it's anecdotally very safe and tolerated - there are coaches and programs (like, wittdoerringpsychiatry.com for example) that can support and guide you through the process. You can also find info at: benzoinfo.com

Goed dat je verhaal hier doet! Ikzelf ( vrouw 65) in protracted WD van een antidepressiva. Nu bijna beter na 41 maanden. Daarvoor 4 maanden taperen. More awareness is soo important. Dank!

I started in my 60s. Slow tapering, holding, more slow tapering is the way. I am down to a small amount, but I am in no rush. I am three years into it.

I learned how to cope with my tinnitus with cognitive behavioral therapy. Benzos made the tinnitus worse, but as I got down from it, it got better. There is hope! ❤

Im 59. Down to 6 mgs Diaz. In hell. Been so sick last 12 months from taper. I think i have to updose to 8 mgs, just to try and alleviate some symptoms. I think i may never be able to get off this drug in my lifetime. 4 years and in such a frikken mess now and i thought i was going slow. the ashton manual is way off in terms of dose reduction, way too much too fast , and also 'gritting yr teeth and getting on with it"., nope. I can barely function. I feel like i now literally have PTSD from the taper panic attacks plus mcas (v extreme Histamine Intolerance) My poor husband and grown chn. Was tapering even worth this ???? I was better b4 this long drawn out taper 😢😢😢

Are you tapering under a supervised medical doctor or yourself? You say too fast but if you were using the Ashton Manual you wouldn't be tapering anymore, would of been done long ago.

She actually just gave up tapering, I believe, and stayed on 5mg of Valium. It's Melissa Bond as the author - "Blood Orange Night"
