Thank you for this tutorial! I am making a throw that calls for a foundation double crochet. It's DK weight yarn, and the instructions are to use an H hook. They use four chains to start, but that doesn't really seem to be necessary? I think I may be doing it right in that my row isn't curving. I subscribed to your channel!

It is a personal preference for your starting chain on the FDC. I like 3, I feel like it gives a cleaner look to the start. I also only chain 2 to turn for a regular DC for the same reason. I feel like with how I crochet it is a tighter/neater look on the edge. I am with you, I use 3 chains to start a Foundation Double Crochet. Thanks for subscribing and happy crocheting! :)

My problem is that my top loop - the one that's already on the hook - gets too big. Other than stopping at every stitch, which gets old & takes so long, not sure how to eliminate that.

The top loop is always the last loop left on the hook after completing the stitch. It is created by the last yarn over and pull through. To make it smaller, keep the tension on the yarn tighter when you pull through and then begin the next stitch (because that last YO pull through will become part of the next foundation stitch, so if you keep it a little tighter on the hook the top of the next stitch won't be as big). I hope that this makes sense. :)

It depends on the pattern. You can definitely join the foundation stitches in the round. I have a video for joining the FSC in the round and one for joining the FHDC in the round. I will attach the video for joining the FSC in the round here: th-cam.com/video/lUWHwzXUPWw/w-d-xo.html
